Picked this beer up at All-Star Pizza and Pub in Parkville. Just stopped in for one beer, and I had heard this was a good one. So I gave it a shot. From a tulip glass.
Appearance - Poured a deep ruby, almost black, with a thin, half finger head of quickly receding head that left outstanding lacing. I personally don't think it was presented well by bar staff, but thats just me.
Smell - Big time dark fruits, oak, booze, and some vanilla and other sweetness. This was a complex smell, lots of layers to it that all kind of merged together. Really good.
Taste - Follows the nose quite well, but I think it improves on the nose even. The dark fruits and vanilla are the big time players on the palate. Oak, dark fruits, and toffee/caramel wash the palate at the start, with the vanilla sweetness bringing up the rear with a slight malty backbone. This was an outstanding beer, for sure.
Mouthfeel - Smooth, like a big stout, creamy, and rich. There is certainly a boozy, bourbon element on the finish, you know this is a high ABV beer. Coats the throat with warmth and goodness.
Overall - This is truly one of the best beers I have ever had. Firestone Walker is quickly becoming one of my favorite breweries, in that their line is so varied and robust. This is an exceptional beer. I thought it was a stout at first, and put it on line with BCBS. I wasn't until I reviewed it that I learned it was considered an English Barleywine. You need to go get this brew as soon as possible.

A - Pours a rich, red-tinged black with a small white head. Minor lacing and retention.
S - Nice scent bringing lot of barley wine and barrel elements with other notes of goodness. Dark fruits come through the most, along with caramel, chocolate, bourbon, oak, light tobacco and alcohol.
T - Tons of maple and vanilla, a bit nutty, very similar to smell, some sips had some alcohol in the back of the nose
M - Surprisingly smooth. Packs a punch but in all the right ways.
O - An amazing barleywine and another amazing beer from Firestone. This to me is the second best barleywine behind King Henry right now. Glad I have a few extra bottles.

2011 reserve series in a brandy snifter.
Alcohol notes overwhelm the senses from the get-go. Like a fine brandy only better.
This is why I now prefer beer to other alcohol choices.
Mouthfeel and aftertaste leave a very pleasant taste and feel that makes each sip a joy to behold.
Life is good when one of these are at hand.

Poured into a large snifter after about 20 minutes out of the ice bucket. Deep reddish brown with a fair amount of tan, creamy head. Good lacing, and the collar was thick at the edge of the glass. Aroma of toffee, caramel, some woody earthiness, sweet medium roasted malt too. Taste is of toffee/caramel, leather, woody-earthy, very lightly smokey (perhaps because of the campfire). So damn good. Mouthfeel is all that barleywines should be. Appropriately carbonated, medium creamy body. I could drink this til the cows come home; too bad I have to trade for it.
