A 22 ounce bottle with a black foil wrapping around the cap. Sent to me by leschkie, so a huge "thank you" goes out to him! Into a Deschutes tulip glass...

It pours deep brown, almost black as you watch it come out of the bottle, and it develops about a centimeter of cream/white head that consists of large bubbles. There is little retention, which is not surprising given the alcohol content. It smells wonderfully of caramel, toffee, toasted malt, some dark fruits (raisin, date), bourbon, and some faintly bitter hops. Very good first impression. The taste is great: hazelnut, toffee, toasted malt, caramel, and bourbon dominate. Some alcohol is detectable, as are some oak flavors and some muddled, floral hops. Mouthfeel is very smooth, albeit thick, and the carbonation helps it slide off the tongue. There is a lingering warmness from the alcohol. Overall, an amazing barleywine that easily ranks amongst my all-time favorites.

Pours muddy and with no head. Looks still. Smell is dark fruit, vanilla, and soy sauce in a this Chinese restaurant uses way too much sauce, kind of way. Taste is sweet and dark fruits and soy sauce with a quick finish. At least the booze is hidden very well, but with the lack of almost any carbonation, cloying nature of it and the soy sauce flavor, it was a big disappointment.

2012 vintage poured from a bottle to Sam Adams perfect pint glass.

The color was great. Dark but a little burgundy showing in the light

Smell was bourbon and typical barley wine. Maybe a little oxidation, but smelled so damn good!

Taste was amazing. I don't even know if I can describe it. If you've had bourbon county barley wine, think a step above. It that damn good

Overall, I'd drink it again, and again, and again

The quintessential barley wine darkness that you could ever want.

One hundred percent greatness.

Worth the plane ticket to the West Coast to get this beauty. I wish I would've bought about ten more. But I did not...

Alas!

If you like light fizzy beer... Stay away! This is full body full flavor wholesome goodness!
