Poured from a 22oz. bottle into a tulip glass. Got this one in a trade and was one of my top wants!

A- Pours a deep deep garnet with a good degree of clarity considering the deep color. With an aggressive pour a surprisingly high light tan head forms and dissipates rather slowly to a thin film. Looks to be of a high viscosity.

S- Medium level of barrel character in this one. Vanilla, coconut, dark dried fruits, alcohol, then oak.

T- The ABV is very present in this beer. Getting more of the vanilla, coconut, oak, and some tannin. Also getting some hops in here which I wasn't expecting but this must be more of a West Coast barleywine along the lines of Bigfoot as opposed to Third Coast Old Ale. Bitterness on the tongue as it leaves the mouth.

M- Nice heavy mouthfeel but not too heavy. Surprisingly high carb for a strong barleywine.

O- A great beer but I have to say the big alcohol presence was a bit of a turn off and unexpected. I was assuming I'd get something a bit smoother. Had this a few days after having Goose Island's BCBW and that was one of the best beers I've ever and may ever have. And this kind of paled in comparison to be honest. And BCBW is 12.1% and Sucaba is 12.5% but the alcohol prescence would lead me to believe it is more like 15% and a could barely detect the ABV in BCBW. Also the bourbon barrel presence is there but at a medium level compared to other big BA beers I've had. Barelywines and Old Ales along with Scotch Ales are my favorite beer styles and hope to see more barrel aged ones.

2013. Poured from the 22 oz. bottle into an Innis & Gunn flute.

a: Clear dark ruby, tall offwhite head receded to even surface foam and dense lacing.

s; Ripe dark fruit.

t: Ripe dark fruit under smoke. Smoky ash taste lingers at first, later gives way to the ripe fruit. High ABV seems well covered, even to minimal initial throat burn, although that does build somewhat later.

m: Medium and very smooth.

o: Wonderful taste treat! Refined and definitely a top representation of the style.
