Review #500
2013 Vintage poured into a snifter

A- Pours incredibly dark amber colored. Surprisingly clear. A one finger off tan eggshell color. Little retention. Some alcohol legs..

S- A caramel sweet smelling beer. A big breaddy malt profile. A nice oak, and char on the nose. A touch of bourbon and a hint of dark fruit. A sweet and syrupy smell.

T- A nice big bourbon up front. An intense sour mash flavor. Followed up by a nice charred oak character. A lingering woody taste. Bourbon dominates the tongue but you wont hear me complaining. A slight hint of cocoa and chocolate in this one. Maybe a chocolate covered cherry. Some fig and a touch of raisin in this beer. A breaddy sweet malt backbone, a touch of caramel and nice bit of toffee. Some roasted nut perhaps, and earthy flavor. Not what I was expecting but very very good stuff here.

M- Good carbonation, a well balanced beer. I would like a touch more body out of something this size however.

O- An epic beer. Really emphasizes on the bourbon barrels. The beer itself provides a very nice base for the barrel program. Wish I could get this one in my area.

2011 Vintage

Been waiting awhile to open this, in retrospect looks like I should have opened it sooner.

Pours an orangish brown in the glass with a decent off-white head.

Smell is pretty decent, some sweet caramel malts, a touch of bourbon. Not overly enticing though.

Taste is not quite right. Some sweetness, some oak, almost no bourbon. A weird bit of heat on the back end.

Mouthfeel is meh.

Overall, this tastes old. Did not age well in my basement. Oh well, I'll have to look for a fresher version of this to really give it a fair shake.

**Edit - Finally got to try a fresh bottle to see how this should taste. The short answer is: much better. Nice bourbon flavor, good sweetness from the malt. Fairly smooth, just a touch of heat. My only complaint is that this gets a bit one-dimensional about halfway through the bomber. A very nice BBBW, well done FW.
