Poured 2012 into snifter glass. The beer presented a dark red ("Ruby" as said on the bottle) in color. Very short head was present, not much lacings around the glass.

The beer smelled boozy - definitely a bourbon forward aroma. This is my first barrel-aged barley wine so I cannot say this is what I expected. But at 12.5%, it doesn't surprise me. There was also a faint aroma of chocolate raspberries and some other dark fruit.

Taste wise it's a complex beer and that made it rather difficult to pick out the flavors of this barley wine. Very very sweet (almost cloying), maybe some smokiness, and some dark fruits. It did start out boozy while chilled but as it warmed up, the booziness became even more present exponentially. The bourbon flavor is a plus for this one. Its there and if you love bourbon, you should like this one.

It had a medium to heavy bodied mouthfeel. The alcohol just sits in your mouth like it's a love seat.
Unfortunately I cannot say I'm all the way impressed with this beer. So much malt, a lot of booze, and the complexity seems to go beyond what I can handle. Like I said, this was my first barrel-aged barley wine and it certainly is different than a non-barrel-aged barley wine. I would probably have to give it some time to 'understand' and appreciate the characteristics of a barrel-aged barley wine. I have to give this beer credit for the awesome aroma. This probably had the easiest characteristics that I could pick out verses the flavor.

It would be nice to try a 2013. Maybe I would have different feelings about this without the age being a possible factor.

Sucaba '13

A - pours a deep brown mahogany. Almost completely opaque. Nearly two fingers worth of tan foam.

S - the aroma is rife with caramel in all its Gooey and sticky glory. Barrel notes are prominent as well. Notes of splinters and vanilla. Classic dark fruit character of raisins, dates and figs. Hints of whole grain bread. Slight nutty character.

T - doughy and slightly sweet caramel malt flavors coat the tongue. Big flavors of wood and vanilla in the centet. Delicately sweet fruit flavors enter as well with notes of cherries, raisins, and dates. Some peppery spice notes of alcohol throughout especially the backend and finish which also exhibits notes of caramel and dried fruit.

M - fuller side of medium bodied. Slick texture. Medium carbonation.

O - excellent barrel aged ale. One of my favorites. Went perfectly with some english stilton.

22oz bottle from the 2013 release shared at our latest beer tasting today, 7/21/2013; poured into a snifter glass. This was tasted alongside King Henry and Arctic Devil.

Starting out, I get sweet caramel and toffee, a little bit of bourbon and oak, vanilla. A bit of coconut too. Mostly a sweet smelling beer. Smells good. Thebeer pours a dark brown, but it is lighter coloured than King Henry. Pours with a 0.5cm off-white head that dissipates fairly quickly. Looks like a heavy beer.

On the palate, I get coconut, vanilla, caramel and toffee. This is a sweet barleywine. Very different from King Henry in that it is sweeter and milder on the palate despite being a big beer. Very tasty on its own.

This beer is bit on the thin side compared to King Henry. Probably a medium bodied beer that has absolutely no indication of booze in it. It's a very good beer that comes down very smoothly. Aftertaste is a bit of sweet toffee and oak.

Deliciously sweet English barleywine that shows off the barrel pretty well. Very tasty and if you like barleywines but haven't had this one, I have no idea why you wouldn't- go out and get some to drink. Its not the best barleywine (King Henry has that title) but it is very good.

-Update: drank a 2012 Sucaba a few days later. The barrel notes a bit more muted and the beer is just as sweet as the 2013. The booziness seems more noticeable in the 2012. I would recommend drinking this beer fresh.

22 oz. bottle. 2013 edition. Served at cellar temp.

Mostly clear dark maple syrup amber. Garnet edges. Plump finger of light peanut shell brown. Great lacing and retention. Rich, deep aromas of brown sugar, coconut, rummy fruits, tobacco, figs, vanilla, molasses, and oak. Heady with definite traces of warming alcohol, but everything seems to fit together perfectly. I just want to keep huffing this.

Toasted malt and toasted coconut up front. Caramel and rummy fruit melange follow. Hints of brown sugar and toffee in the mix. Nice sweetness level--not too cloying. Toasted coconut picks up toward the finish. Vanilla and woody oak notes intensify as well. More figgy fruit and toffee in the finish, along with plenty of soothing, warming alcohol. Smooth and not too hot. Full-bodied, creamy feel. A beautifully put together beer. Too drinkable for its strength. Well done.
