Dark brown beer. Sparse, scraggly head but phenomenal retention. Came in a fancy cardboard box. Wax seal that for once wasn't a pain to cut off.

Not at all like the toffee fruit cake English barleywine I was expecting, this is one of those phenomenally complex beers one can pull flavors from all night. I smell chocolate biscotti, chocolate covered espresso beans, bourbon, black cherries and red grapes scraped across an oak barrel. Tastes like molasses cookies, bourbon and a port-like dark fruit. Chocolate syrup. Still warm after 6 months in the cellar.

A beer worthy of its high ratings.

2011 Abacus poured into a tulip.

A - Deep brown and red, very little grey/white head.

S - Big bourbon, chocolate and raisin right up front. Figs, dates, caramelized sugar, cotton candy, caramel, chocolate covered cherries, angel tears.

T - Bourbon, raisin, strawberries and cream flavored candy, dates,

M - thick and warming. Low carbonation.

O - Still a great beer, different than fresh, has definitely cooled down a bit. A strange candy flavor has emerged. I prefer it fresh.
