2012 bottle.

Appearance. Pours a very deep amber-brown with half a finger of pale beige head.

Smell. Vanilla and dank oak with some caramel, earthy hops, raisins and unidentifiable (maybe berries?) ripe fruits.

Taste. Sweet caramel, brown sugar, and vanilla. Toasted oak and some bitter earthy hops. High alcohol is fairly well hidden.

Mouthfeel. Full bodied and a little sticky with low carbonation.

Overall. A very nice barleywine with lots of oak barrel. Enjoying it on this cold winter night.

look: 3.5 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 4.5

Pours a dark mahogany, pretty clear with nearly no head, a smallish cap of tan foam, no retention or lacing and bits of sediment on the bottom.

Deep caramel, toffee, bourbon, vanilla and wood. Sweet and dry, nearly no hop character. Wood and booze on the back end that lingers.

I was afraid that this was going to be too sweet but it's very balanced, toffee and grainy malt with subtleties of cocoa, peanut brittle and light caramel. Wood and bourbon contribute lighter notes of vanilla and char. Finishes beautifully and drying with light caramel sweetness, unsalted pop corn and toasted marshmallow.

Medium bodied considering the abv and dries well. Subdued carbonation, warming alcohol. Not sticky at all.

I recall this being a bit green that first time with alcohol being astringent and the malt being stickier. This is a rich treat that is drinking well after 9 months, balanced and complex. A must have for the cellar.
