22 oz bottle poured into a wine glass at cellar temperature.

L – Ruby brown color with a 2-finger bubbly tan head. Pretty good retention but not much lacing. Clear with a good amount of bubbles.

S – Lots of bourbon and lots of woody oak with some vanilla notes. There’s a touch of caramel and molasses and a hint of earthy hops, but I’m mostly getting bourbon and oak.

T – Follows the nose unfortunately. Starts off slightly sweet with some caramel and molasses but bourbon and oak take over quickly. There is maybe a little bit of earthy bitterness that creeps in at the finish but it is overshadowed by the dry, hot, and astringent alcohol. Hardly anything in the way of dark fruits is apparent.

F – Medium-to-full-bodied with good carbonation, a sticky and smooth but astringent mouthfeel, and a woody, earthy, and dry finish. Oak dryness and astringency lingers and accentuates the heat from the alcohol.

O – I’ve got to say I was disappointed by this beer. I was looking for a big, rich, malty beer but what I got was basically weaker, carbonated bourbon. While I do like bourbon, and I do like bourbon-barrel aged beers, I don’t like my beers to taste only like bourbon. The malt and hops are there somewhat but they are completely overshadowed by the taste and aroma of bourbon and oak. The only reason why this isn’t getting a lower score is because this is what can happen with English barleywines if they’re aged long enough. They lose some of the malt and hop characteristics and take on a more sherry-like or port-like quality. However, while I can understand losing some hops, they should not lose this much malt character. I’m not quite sure what the hype is all about with this beer, but I’ve had better barleywines.

22oz into snifter at cellar temp.

Pours w/a thin film of tan head over a very deep, yet fairly clear (when held to the light) ruby body. Just a touch of lacing.

Aromas are all sweet liquor. Very cordial-like. Smells hot. Deep cherry, oak, vanilla bean. The unabashed alcohol is the only reason this is not a 5.

Incredibly smooth, but hot. This is a sipper, no doubt. Deep fruit quality... lots of marachino cherry, vanilla/oak barrel, English hops, cocoa... maybe even a touch of brandy. Delicious, clean, and smooth.

Very glad I popped this one, as I have another 2012 waiting in the wings for some day far down the line. This would be an awesome 10 year comparison, but not sure if I have the willpower.

This is a great beer from my favorite brewery. This is my go-to, when I have a few extra bucks to spend, because there is a store that has a ton in stock around me- because most people that go there have no clue what this beer is.

A- Reddish gold, very thin lacing, viscous, sticky on the glass

S- Booze, ripe fruits, vanilla, bourbon, caramel

T- Very boozy forward, has a kick right up front. Huge bourbon flavors, vanilla, sweetness like a honey/caramel combo, fruity finish

M- The booziness is noticable and stays on the palate, leaves a thick, chewy feeling in the mouth, flavor stays with you long after the sip is gone

O- great beer. It is my favorite barley wine
