A-black with a small brown head that faded fast and leaves no lace
S- you get many aromas at first, roasted, brown sugar, and a bitter chocolate aroma.
T-roasted taste with the caramel malt coming through, then you get a coco bitterness that sweetens up in the end
M-creamy silky smooth with low carbonation
O-great taste and nice balance of all flavors

I am extremely disappointed in Firestone for this one. The brewery that I thought never failed to make only supreme beers has fallen very short of that mark for this beer.

Poured a dark, coca-cola-like appearance. foam dissipates just like it would for coke. There was nothing velvety about this beer in its appearance or taste.

Taste was very one dimensional and flat. I got nothing but roasted bitter notes of coffee. And that was it. It was not accompanied by any sort of sweetness like chocolate or malt, it was just coffee water residue. I clearly must have gotten a dud because I see this is rated a 90, unless I'm crazy or the world is crazy, this was not a good beer and I actually poured it down the drain after about 10 sips. I tried!

Velvet Merlin – Oatmeal Stout (5.5%) - Firestone Walker Brewing Co.
☆☆☆☆

App: Pours a gorgeously deep brown, not quite black, but damned close. Throws a massive two finger tan head that settles down to a nice half-finger ring that retains really well. Minimal lacing.

Smell: Deep roasted flavors balanced with a light chocolate cookie like aroma. Notes of caramel and toffee. Slightly creamy smelling. Slight cooked cereal aroma as the brew warms. No hops aromas to mention.

Taste: Toasty and slightly sweet on the foretaste, opening to a more assertive roasted flavor. Slightest hints of charr add an extra level of complexity. Little bit of chocolate and caramel, but not as much as suggested by the nose. Very well balanced and easy drinking. A hint of sweetness on the fore and true, but the aftertaste is fairly dry with roasted flavors lingering on the palate long after the swallow. Could be a little stronger in overall flavor, but for the most part really good.

Mouth: Oatmeal adds a creaminess to the feel. Pretty heavy bodied but not syrupy. Crispness from the dry, roasted malts. Carbonation is soft and contributes to the overall creaminess of this stout.

Home tasting, 12oz bottle into Tulip. 2/6/14.

12 bottle into pint glass

Appearance - Dark, dark ruby brown, almost black, no clarity. Didn't produce much head off the pour, probably my bad. Minimal lacing.

Smell - Nice big aroma of roasted coffee, big time bitterweet chocolate, earthy/grassy

Feel/Taste - Light, refreshing carbonation carries the flavors well, medium body, slight sweetness. Flavor follows nose with very nicely with dark chocolate notes, slight dark fruit, earthy roasted coffee. A touch of roasty bitterness and semi-sweetness on the finish.

Overall - Probably the best overall oatmeal stout I've had so far; very well crafted, the flavors really pop.
