On Tap

Firestone Walker Brewing co.
Paso Robles, CA

Hazed light yellow in color with a near-white crown that doesn't last for long and only leaves small dots of stick down the glass. Appropriate.

A very mild aroma, with some orange zest, bubblegum, and banana. There's a bit of wheat and sweetness.

The flavor too is exceptionally mild, even for a hefeweizen. There's very minor amounts of banana and bubblegum, a hint of clove, but this is exceptionally wild.

Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

A very average hefeweizen.

On-tap at the brewery. Served in a 10oz nonic.

Cloudy tangerine body with faint amber highlights. Very small creamy head which fizzes away to a small active collar. Decent, albeit thin, sea-foam-like lacing.

Banana, honey, and wheat in the nose. Clean with maybe a hint of spice.

Flavors closely follow the aromatics, with the addition of a touch of orange zest, a hint of malt, and Cheerios. Very clean, brisk, and fresh.

Medium-light bodied, soft, yet zesty and well carbonated.

In retrospect I wish I'd picked up a growler of this...

Freshness counts for so much with this style - and this is among the better domestic examples I've thus far sampled. FW has put a subtle signature on a German classic, much like they normally do with English ales.

On tap at Toronado. Appears a cloudy amber in the glass, topped by a finger of white head that recedes to a ring.

The aroma has a big bubblegum character, though it's by no means cloying. There's also some spiciness, bread dough, yeast and a hint of banana.

Dry and crackery on the tongue, mildly sweet citrus and banana flavors support fairly reserved spicy phenols. Bubblegum, white pepper and clove come out mid-palate. It finishes dry and bready with a touch of spice. Very refreshing stuff, an above-average hefe.

Served on-draught into a nonical half-pint glass at Firestone Walker's taproom in Paso Robles on its second day of operation. Reviewed from notes. Expectations were average given the brewery - which I find mundane.

Paired with a steak and some fries - quite well, I might add.

A: Pours a half finger white colour head of some cream, okay thickness, and pretty bad retention (~40 seconds). Colour is a predictable hazy orange-yellow.

Sm: Fresh orange peel, clove, and banana. Standard fare for the style. Pleasant but unremarkable. A mild to moderate strength aroma.

T: Fresh orange peel, clove, banana, wheat as the foundation, and a hint of yeast. Balanced, fresh, pleasant, and enjoyable. Not horribly complex but it doesn't need to be. Refreshing. Built quite well for the style.

Mf: Smooth and wet, slightly crisp, refreshing, and of good thickness. Complements the flavours well. Not perfect, but well executed.

Dr: Very drinkable. A good session hefeweizen. I'd get it again. Very solid. It's done typically and by the numbers, but it's very good for what it is. Its simplicity and lack of subtlety holds it back, but hefeweizen fans will really like this.

Drank on tap from a traditional glass pint at Union Ale on State Street in Santa Barbara, CA. Rich honey in color, vaguely light amber, and very cloudy with visible carbonation. Small white head with tight bubbles that dissipated quickly.

Prominent banana on the nose with slight clove and a hint of clover honey.

Similar taste to the classic German hefeweizens but slightly muted with significant banana and yeast notes. Also some minimal white pepper and clove.

Sleek mouthfeel with some up front bubbly carbonation which diminished by the second half of the glass.

Smooth and quite drinkable overall. Lowish ABV and softer notes than the classic European hefs make this an easy beer to finish.

Hey, a new one to add to the favorite Hefeweizen list. Cloudy light amber in the glass with lovely lacing. Watery body, in a nice way, and a sprightly mouthfeel. Pleasing mix of esters but not too heavy on the spice. Mellow malt sweetness with a tang for balance. Hard to find fault with this. A lighter but full-flavored version of Hefe style. Beautiful and totally gulpable in that big glass. Long spicy nose.

On tap at Tiger Tiger in San Diego. The half-litre pour is it in a tall German Weissebier glass.

Served on tap at Firestone Walker Brewery in Paso Robles, Ca.

I was hesitant to try this beer as I used to drink a lot of hefeweizens and was pretty burnt out on them.

Pours a nice semi-opaque orange color with a half finger of head.

Smells like a standard hef but tastes like no other I've had. Lots of sweet citrus notes with a slight floral quality. The tap room employee mentioned that "no orange is required" which I'm excited to say is true. I hate getting a beer with a hunk of fruit hanging off of it.

If you're like me and possibly drank a lot of Blue Moon at some point in your life, let this hefeweizen reintroduce you to the genre. Now if only Firestone Walker would bottle this stuff!

Enterprise Fish Co. in Santa Monica calls this beer "Blowfish Hefeweizen." Something tells me that they gave it that name, but it's good enough for me.

This hefeweizen pours a bright yellow, cloudy body with a creamy white head. OK retention and minimal lacing.

The aroma is packed with wheat, and also contains a peppery phenol character to go along with a little bit of banana esther aroma.

The taste is what I expect from a solid American Hefeweizen. A good wheat body and a flavor profile that leans heavily on pehnolic qualities to provide a peppery flavor. To a lesser extent, esthers are present also to provide a little bit of banana flavor.

Smooth mouthfeel with adequate carbonation and body.

Lately I'm surprised when I find good American-brewed German styles, and this qualifies.

Had this at firestone tonight. Poured into a pint glass. Appearance is exceptional. Very inviting. Its a very pretty bright gold almost orange color and opaque. Very pretty. You get a very nice balance of bannana and clove from start to finish. Lacing is evident. Everything is very well balanced. The drink is of medium body and is a great joy to drink. I did get hints of toastiness and a tad of spice. This beer is definatly where it needs to be for bottling and I cant wait for the day!
