Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a tulip.

Double DBA pours a dark caramel ruby color with a small but thick ecru head. A bit of webbed lace sticks down the side of the glass.

The aroma has a bit of the English Bitter aroma to it. Peat, roasted malt, raisin, brown suar, earthy notes and a bit of booze hit my nose.

The flavor has a lot of sweet caramel and brown sugar up front. Vanilla, woody and earth notes, peat, caramel malt, and a touch of alcohol compose the flavor. The taste does not change over the course of the sip but has a nice complexity to it. There is a charred brown sugar flavor that overlays the whole flavor.

The mouthfeel is thick and rich, with a smooth and creamy carbonation. There is a bit of fusel alcohol flavor. It is sticky on the lips.

This is a very good beer; I can see why Firestone uses it for their anniversary beers. The alcohol flavor would fade with proper aging, and there is a good amount of flavor, smoothness, and depth of character to the beer itself.

Firestone's Double DBA, barrel-aged imperial special bitter. 12% ABV.

A: Nice smoky haze upon opening. A little less than a finger of lopsided head. Seems to be no lacing. Clear, slightly-orange red, with tiny grey sediment suspended throughout. Golden yellow in the dimple, with more suspended sediment. (4.5)

S: Deep, fruity molasses. Malty. Some bourbon and oakiness, but it's lighter than Firestone's other BA offerings. Lightly browned cereal grain (a la, whole grain Cheerios). I'm having trouble nailing down the fruit smell I'm getting. Something along the lines of fig or tamarind. Toffee. (4.5)

T/MF: Flavor is darker, and with more caramel notes, than the basic DBA. Rich fruity toffee. Dried cherry, plum. More of that malted cereal grain. Slight char note on the back end of all those caramel and toffee notes. Booziness is well masked. Slightly soft mouthfeel. Slight, bittersweet chocolate note. Very slight grassiness, but it very well hidden underneath the other flavors. (4.5/4.25)

Overall: Decent amount of sweetness along with the flavors makes this more of a dessert beer, to me. Quite glad I was able to try this before it was gone!(4.5)

A - Pours a hazy dark ruby red color with thin lacing, minimal carbonation, and very viscous looking.

S - Bourbon, toasted caramel, toffee, vanilla, and oak.

T - Lots of toasted toffee, vanilla, caramel, oak, and bourbon from start to finish. Alcohol effervescence is prominent along with alcohol warming, light citrus bitterness at the very end and lingering alcohol warmth.

M - Thick, full body, sticky, carbonation is silky smooth.

O - Very boozy and complex.

Pours a deep rich amber with a nicely formed one and a half finger off white head atop,great rich clarity and color to this beer.Darf fruit,vanilla,and sweet acohol dominate the nose,some toasted oak is there as well,smells like a booze bomb.Sweetness is the main flavor component of this beer,sweet dark fruit and bourbon notes mixed with more vanilla and jet fuel-like booze.Wow a little to much boozy sweetness for me,I wanna stay awake to see the Tigers beat the ugly beards!

A: A dark amber with good clarity and some very fine particulate floaters. The creamy light tan bubble dissipate quickly with a ring of bubbles hanging on to the rim of the glass.

S: An inviting spicy hops and oak whisky barral and whisky aroma to start. The hops are moderately-low with moderate oak and whisky. The cinnamon and vanilla from the oak almost give it coconut-like and almond aromas. There is a moderately-low orange ester and some obvious floral alcohol aroma.

T: A toffee malt flavor with a good amount of sweetness that is kept in check by a moderate bitterness. The oak and bourbon are there from start to finish without dominate the flavor at first but after a few sips their flavors seems to accumulate on the taste buds bringing moderate vanilla and cinnamon flavors. The alcohol adds a sweetness to the off dry finish with a quick bitter and somewhat orange aftertaste.

M: A medium-heavy bodied beer with moderately-low carbonation. There is quiet a bit of alcohol warmth and a touch of slickness.

O: This is a big beer with a lot of balance given the strength and complexity of all the flavors and aromas going on here. This beer will definitely take the sting off a cold winter night and is an excellent substitute for an after dinner glass of scotch bring many similar flavors.

Pours a hazy orangey amber with good legs, fair lacing and a thin collar persisting. Aroma is earthy and some citrus hop, lots of oakiness, caramel maltiness and vanilla. Taste is very much like the aroma: sweet toasty bread/caramel malt laced with spicy citrus, vanilla, wet earthy/floral hops. Light body that makes it crisp with the low carbonation.

On tap at Pangea Sacramento. Looks a smooth textured copper to ruby to medium dark brown.
Rich smell of plum, apricot, toffee and butterscotch.. Taste is semi sweet cocoa, toffee, plums, fermented fruit, butterscotch, almond/marzapam and getting lots of bourbon on the finish. Heavy mouthfeel with a sweet, smooth texture and plenty body. Laced the glass like rings at every sip..serve with desserts, vanilla ice cream, flambés, winter dishes, such as roasted kabocha or butternut squash, pumpkin pie; upmost rich-dishes such as anything browned or buttered or candied!!!

Appearance: hazy, copper in color, 1/4 inch head, high carbonation

Smell: dominated by pineapple--yes not what i thought I was gonna get, tones of oak and vanilla as well. This is right up there with Creme Brulee Stout as one of the best smelling beers I have ever had.

Taste: toffee and sweet vanilla start, citrus in the middle that quickly goes to oaking and whiskey

Mouthfeel: sweet with a touch of bitterness, heavy body, smooth, medium-high carbonation

Overall: The best beer I have tasted that has been imported to Massachusetts in a long time. The smell is amazing with the pineapple being so fresh. The oak and the whiskey tastes are present but never overbearing. I will certainly pick this up again as a treat for special occasions.

Pours a hazy orange, no head. Smell is apple cider and banana bread. Not hiding the alcohol at all. Not my cup of tea 2oz bomber pours clear deep ruby red with tan head of foam. The aroma offends with robust levels of booze, sweet whiskey, coconut and candy like sweetness. I can’t say that the taste is any different. It is just full up booze and whiskey that gets hot and boozy from time to time. It also has lesser notes of sort of a coconut to candy like sugary sweetness.

Double Double Barrel Ale opens to a malty, yeasty nose that smells initially more like the inside of a bakery than a beer: rising wheat dough, floury baguette, even touches of marble rye. These are slowly followed by a thick runnel of molasses, caramel, and wildflower honey, as well as a bevy of fruit esters, including berry, orange, apricot, and cherry, all of these present in Jolly Rancher candy-like strength. There’s a good hint of rosewater around the edges, joined by sweet pink grapefruit and a touch of pine resin. Good hints of oak, bourbon, and vanilla give away the barrel aging, but do not overpower the beer; rather, they blend nicely with the sweet fruits and thick breads. As a whole, the nose is very nice, bending toward the sugary side, but with enough bread and whiskey to avoid overpowering sweetness, and the aromas are full-bodied and potent.

On the tongue, the beer opens with a malty, yeasty hit of brown bread, caramel, toast crust, biscuit, bread dough, and chewy whole wheat bread, but this is tempered almost immediately by oak, vanilla, and whiskey from the barrel aging, adding a sexy alcoholic vibe to the breads. Fruit esters and sugars kick in next, bringing apricot, cherry, orange, and berry flavors, as well as molasses, honey, and brown sugar. Thick rosewater and pink grapefruit come from the hops, as well as touches of pine resin and hints of lemon. Hold the beer on the tongue long enough and the sugars will die off, revealing a good whiskey barrel belly. The aftertaste is slightly over-heavy on the whiskey notes, but a few touches of sugar and bread do remain, and the beer lingers on the tongue for a good while. Mouthfeel is medium, and carbonation is medium.

As a whole, this is excellent beer. The barrel aging brings a fantastic oak and vanilla tone to what was obviously already a well-crafted brew, and the flavors mingle together deliciously. The whiskey flavors do tend to overpower the latter half of the mouthful, and the aftertaste is almost completely dominated by bourbon, making the high 12% ABV leave one’s breath feeling as if it could tarnish silver. But even here, this works well with the beer, and the next sip brings fresh berry and sugar notes to blend marvelously with the whiskey vapors. Recommended.

Light copper or a dark amber, depending on the light, with a thin light khaki colored head that doesn't last long at all, eventually leaving the glass with an oily shine. Typical of a barrel-aged beer of this strength.

Aroma of bourbon, caramel, toffee, pecan, and big vanilla notes, along with some earth and simple grain in the background. It smells lovely, though Abacus and Helldorado do smell better, in my opinion.

The flavor too is quite nice, but again I think Abacus and Helldorado both taste slightly better. This is full of vanilla, bourbon, wood, grain, and a bit of alcohol. There's also mild dark fruits, though it's not a major component of the flavor profile.

Medium bodied with low carbonation. Very drinkable.

2013 vintagte, poured into 22oz snifter; deep ruby/garnet/brownish with a fizzy cream-colored head that fades after a bit into a spotty ring of foam. Leaves lovely spidery lacing as it goes.
Smell is dark fruit, booze, toffee, caramel, burnt sugar, vanilla, oak, bourbon, raisin...awesome. Taste is big and sweet; sweet crackery malt over sweet cherries, golden raisins, toffee and caramel, oak and vanilla and bourbon barrel character, slight booze at the end but incredibly hidden for 12%.
Mouthfeel is smooth, wet and full. Glorious.
Overall, I can definitely see why this is classified on here as a barleywine (which is apparently what ESBs turn into when they evolve). The barrel aging has sapped any bitterness this beer once had, turning into a dark, sweet, sipping pleasure.

2012 Reserve #001 bottle (with very similar impression from a 2013 bottle in Nov 2014).

Translucent red-copper color; sparkling clear; small but durable off-white head.

Aroma: Big, rich and complex with some evidence of higher ABV. Surprisingly fruity! Hints of oak, caramel, raisins, brown sugar and bourbon.

Taste: Rich, complex and lasting. Bourbon whiskey-oak tones over a very fine barley wine. Has 12% ABV but drinks more like 8%. Lightly sweet and fruity flavor with hints of toffee, butterscotch and brown sugar.

Mouthfeel: Smooth but with some alcohol heat. Excellent for 12% ABV!

O: Exceptional. Perfect for sipping. An ESB transformed into something else altogether.

A: Caramel with a brilliant red tone that comes through when held up to the sunlight.

S: Toffee, toasted coconut, vanilla, and a very faint, saison-like funk.

T: Following from the smell, an initial hit of toffee and light vanilla followed by a subtle sour apple flavor and finishing with the taste of a strong, English bitter mixed with a bit of bourbon.

M: Syrupy but not cloying.

O: A great beer that transforms from a barleywine to a bitter in your mouth.

Appearance (4.25/5): Deep caramel color, garnet almost. Minimal head.

Smell (4.5): Caramel, toasted coconut, some booziness, berry scents, cinnamon.

Taste (4.5/5): Huge huge barrel flavors--vanilla, coconut--in the beginning. Then the massive caramel malt backbone kicks in with some great bready notes complimenting it. Some subtle hoppy bitter notes in the finish too, but the barrel character is what defines the beer. The flavors really pos as it warms up. Alcohol definitely plays a role in the flavor–it's there, but it helps to cut the considerable sweetness. Definitely does not detract from the beer's flavor.

Mouthfeel (4.25/5): Double DBA has finish for days. A thick, chewy mouthfeel that comes from the loads of caramel and vanilla flavors. Slightly resinous. This beer, because of its high alcohol and strong flavors is definitely a sipper. That works in the drinker's favor though, since the flavors shine brighter as it creeps towards room temperature.

Overall (4.5/5): Double DBA is an excellent example of why Firestone Walker is one of the best breweries in the country. I'm blown away by the barrel character on this beer. Here is a rich beer worthy of the most special occasion. Excellent stuff that really is worth the $18.99 price tag.

After getting loads of crap from my local distributor, who failed to get the case of this beer allocated to my store, to my store(!), I had a buddy kind enough to swap an extra bottle to help ease my sorrows. Normally I would sit on a beer like this for at least a year... I failed in that regard. Poured from the bottle into my DFH tulip.

A - Pours a clear, rust orange, with little head that shows decent retention.
Lacing is almost non-existant from sip to sip, which is disappointing,
but the carbonation is very visible, so there's hope there.

S - BOOZE. Lots of it. There are HINTS of caramel, toffee, and light malt notes,
but the ABV and the barrel take over the nose for the most part. Letting it warm up made the booze even more apparent. Age would have done this one some good, it seems... Oh well. I was weak! Live and learn, I suppose.

T - Cheese and crackers! The taste is leaps and bounds above what the smell would lead you to expect. Creme Brûlée, coconut, peaty scotch notes, and even a hint of pineapple.... If a Pina Colada had sex with a 15-year Scotch barrel, I'm pretty sure it would taste somewhat like this. The malt serves to hold the whole thing together, and the hops add only the slightest hint of herbs and acidity. I will hoard as much of this next year as I can get my hands on! (And that's not how I roll... but I will make an exception.) There is a good bit of heat on the palate from the ABV, which builds the more you sip this monster, but honestly, I don't find that to be a flaw with this beer.

M - Light, creamy, and slick. The carbonation makes almost no appearance here, but the overall body of this beer is still pretty decent. The booziness is still there,
but doesn't punch the palate. It's warm... but in a "Geez, I wish I was sitting by a fire pit, somewhere in the middle of nowhere, huddled up with my lady under a bigass blanket, and sipping on some of this stuff" sort of way. Yeah. Longest run-on sentence ever.

O - I was thoroughly impressed with this beer, and given the chance, would fist fight Russell Crowe for another bottle. Great stuff, although I still liked Parabola (And Cockeyed Cooper, to name another BA beer I LOVED) a little better. Glad I had the chance to sip it....

Poured hard into my Lucifer snifter.

Sight: Lovely hazy, burnished orange with a stark white head. This recedes into a light film on top, delicate speckles of lace.

Smell: Oh God, the malt! Sweet bready, malty, raisin goodness. Just the slightest hint of hop.

Taste: More Heaven in a glass. Sipped while chilled, it offers a great caramel note, playing in concert with a sugary malt and like its aroma, dark fig/raisin characteristic of balanced English style Barleywines. Booze is well hidden for 12%- to me, a great hallmark of well-crafted barleywine. As it warms, the hops are a bit more apparent, but the other flavors still take control. I MAY consider this a "malt bomb."

Mouthfeel: Delicate carbonation, slick oily feel on the tongue. Very pleasing. Smooth, almost to a fault.

Overall: Fantastic offering by FW. And a new "nomenclature" for me: Imperial Special Bitter. Call it what you want, I'll call it malty magnificence.

Thanks so much to Benny (styleisking) for snagging me this before it's gone for good.

It's a heavily clouded brown with lighter brown in its outer edges but no highlights to speak of in terms of color. The head is a tan cap that settles nicely to roughly half a finger's height and sticks some moderate to slightly heavier spotting and thin webbing sparsely.
This is a malty beast to be sure. It does manage to show off its English nature in its own way, more particularly in the flavor than the aroma. Otherwise there's a lot of sweetness while refraining from cloying. There's lots of caramel, toffee, brown sugar, molasses, and maybe even a hint of something like marshmallow flashing in there. Vanilla comes clearly through the barrel, which adds plenty of spirituous heat and wood to complement. It comes off as a touch heavy at times, but I'm surprised this monster can be kept in check at all. Earth runs into the middle and on through as it finishes with lots of dark fruits.
It's smooth as good bourbon with a steady carbonation to it. It comes on creamy and eases dry without losing the smoothness, while just a bit of crispness gently nips. It never loses smoothness, and the heat just sort of slides in and into the finish.

10oz pour into a goblet.

A: Pours a hazy brown with a touch of orange. Minimal head from the pour that doesn't leave much lacing.

S: Initial aroma of booze and fermented malts. Great oak characteristic. Dark fruits permeate the brew. Very enticing.

T: Such a finely crafted beer. Has the barley wine flavors one would expect with an extra dose of oak and booze. Dark fruits and malts similiar to the aroma.

M: Smooth and velvety mouthfeel. Full bodied with somewhat low carbonation. For being such a high ABV it's not too hot.

Overall a really good barleywine I would recommend in a heartbeat. Barrel qualities really shine. A must have for any fan of barley wines or oak aging.

Fresh 2013 vintage

A: Murky copper with a orange/gold hue. Typical BA head - a vigorous pour yielded a substantial big bubble light beige head. It quickly is reduced to a small ring around the glass.

S: Huge, delicious, typical FW. Rich caramel, toasted coconut, vanilla and toffee all blend together. There is a great organic woody oak flavor as well that smooths out the sweetness. There are subtle notes of light-skinned berries, cocoa powder, and mild alcohol.

T: Very rich caramel and toffee, coconut and vanilla sweetness outline the experience. At the back end there are notes of light cocoa and smooth toasted oak.

P: Incredibly smooth. Medium-full body with very soft, velvety carbonation that's almost unnoticeable but still there, definitely not flat. It allows all the flavors to present themselves. Perfect, really.

O: An absolute knock out. So well balanced, appropriately rich, and obviously blended with care and intelligence. The alcohol is barely noticeable, but it will be interesting to see what age does to it.

A - Golden brown, white fluffy head

S - Coconut, Vanilla, toffe, bourbon and aged fruit.

T - Sweet coconut, vanilla, brown sugar, toffee, more aged fruit, bourbon, chocolate and just a just a booze on the finish

M - super frothy, creamy, obviously full body, but slightly less carbonated.

O - Awesome. The coconut and vanilla made this very different from other American Strong Ales I've had. I loved it. and I normally HATE coconut. Vanilla and bourbon also combine with a very good mouth- to make a very good brew.

22oz, black wine seal enclosure, capped bottle, 2013 vintage. Thanks to doktorzee for extracting this from SoCal for me.

This beer pours a hazy, dark bronzed amber hue, with one hefty finger of bubbly, weakly frothy beige head, which leaves some spectral wave splash lace around the glass as it slowly ebbs away.

It smells of acrid grainy whisky barrel staves, sweet toffee, caramel nougat, and treacle-tinted malt, some earthy, gritty vegetal essence, a bit of buttered biscuit, vanilla extract, brown sugar syrup, and some mildly bitter citrus cream and piney hops. The taste is more malt sweetness up front - caramel candy, biscuity toffee, molasses - followed by a prominent vanillan oakiness, a hint of cinnamon, mixed, understated black fruit, a tame sugary nuttiness, still mild citrus and pine notes, and a sort of red wine alcohol astringency.

The bubbles are pretty well stamped down, out for the count, the body a sturdy medium-full weight, and fairly squishy in its rampant smoothness - or is that just an awkward creaminess? It finishes still sweet, sure, but tempered enough by the wood, hops, and alcohol to make a serious go of this.

One tasty, complex, and strong version of the style, among the last that I'd suspect to come out of this brewing region, what with their predilection for West Coast hop-pimpin'. Robust, thick, and rather enjoyable, the big-ass ABV well ingrained and generally obfuscated. A nice warm-up for a night on the local arts and lit scene with international sex pundit Dan Savage, methinks.

Hard to review this beer. It's still pretty damn fresh right now, only being on the market for about a month now topps.

A - A bit lighter than a cherry red, good head on a semi-aggressive pour but receeds to nothing within a minute or so. Good.

S - Toffee, light Butterscotch and all barrel from that point on (coconut, vanilla, oak and Whiskey) Besides the Toffee, this one is all about the Barrel.

T - Mirrors nose but this is a one trick pony. What I mean by that is that this beer is all barrel BUT balanced!! Not too hot and not over-bourboned. The only bit of the base beer I get is strong notes of toffee. Otherwise, as I mentioned...this is all balanced classic house FW Barrel flavor profile. A wee bit boozy but COME this not expected for a Barrel Aged ALE? Very nice.

M -'s where it's hard to review. It's the easiest drinking barrel aged beer I've ever had. I'm not used to such a light body for this style while still holding so much great Barrel flavor. At 12%, I could easily kill this 22oz in an hour or less. I usually prefer more body to the barrel aged style, but the base beer is a Ale afterall, which is why I'm giving such a high score, and well deserved I'd say DAMNIT!

O - Another solid score but I'm not jumping out of my shoes, but really...I don't have any other Barrel Aged Ales to compare it to. It's delicious! I'd be very curious as to what age will do to this beer. Hopefully bring out more of the base beer BUT, the big barrel flavor dominating right now is quite sublime while still being a "one trick pony." I wish this year's Parabola had more of this much Barrel influence BTW.

Pours a dark murky brown. Hazy with little head and decent lacing. 2012 reserve.

Toasted coconut, vanilla, fruit of raisin and prune. Burnt sugar, bready with caramel.

Upfront sweetness with a bourbon head tic. Vanilla, tobacco, toasted coconut and burnt sugar works well with the heat. Sweetness just shines. Just plain crazy and complex!

Classic FSW barrel program. Big malt sweetness, vanilla, toffee and dark fruit. This is a bourbon neat. If you love bourbon and GI BCS, this is a must, esp. the price. $13 is a steal. I'm stunned! Drink now or cellar. Just simply Awesome!!!
