I've been eagerly anticipating my first Double Jack ever since I first heard David Walker's announcement of its release at the Surly Goat in Hollywood. A Double IPA that Walker claimed would blow all other doubles out of the water? Sounds like a tall order to me.
It's safe to say Firestone has impressed again with it's more "high-end" efforts. Double Jack pours an unassuming golden with a very nice head that retains seemingly forever. Encouraging lacing and some light carbonation leads me in a positive direction with this beer.
The hop aroma explodes from the bottle as soon as the pouring begins. Without even needing assistance, the spicy hop aroma of citrus and herb permeate. The flavor on the tongue starts at the back with bitter hops sparking aggressively, but mellows out quite a bit with hints of carmel, malt sweetness and an edge of alcohol. The beer is surprisingly mellow considering it's status as a double - the malts definitely smooth and balance the beer.
Overall I'm very content with the effort, now showy or aggressive by any means. Pleasant for IPA lovers!
