12oz bottle poured into tulip

A: Golden, copper, maple colored brew, with some carbonation that peeked with a one finger white head that is gone before ya know it. Light comes through easily, has a nice glow.

S: Sweetness mixed with pine and juicy esters. Lots of tropical fruit up front, sweet sweet pineapple that fronts hard and brings along light citrus peel, parts of mango and some juicy nectar.

T: Follows the nose quite well, keeps on the juicy path without bringing much bitterness into the equation. Pine-wood façade slides into the middle mouth riding the coat tails of sunrise smoothie forward flavor. Citrusy – but lightly – notes of papaya. No real dryness or boozy character, and very little malt skeleton, could be more balanced, but still crisp. The finish comes up just so slightly herby, clean-fresh-coriander.

M: Really nice body, medium-full, with pleasant carbonation. Aftertaste is clean and miraculously dry, but also sweet.

O: Tropical, great tasting, and crisp. Very refreshing and with excellent drinkability, hits the West Coast IPA spot, while hiding any ABV. I’m not super impressed, but I’m not disappointed either. I could go through a few of these

12 oz. bottle purchased at Connecticut Ave. Wine and Liquors in NW D.C. in late 1/14, bottled on 12/6/13, poured into my NEBCO Gandhi-Bot glass and drank while reviewing over an hour.

A - 3/3 - golden-yellow coloration, super high clarity for style (can both read and see through), initial frothy white head that settles into a subtle glass lacing after several minutes; big alcohol legs; moderate carbonation that reagitates on the swirl

S: 9/12 - classic PW hop aroma - grapefruit, orange, tangerine, pine, etc.; unfortunately, with several months on this bottle (and even though it was stored at refrigerated Ts), it's just more muted that I'd like; some biscuity/bready and alcohol notes present as well

T: 18/20 - on the anterior tongue, there's a mild bitterness to awaken the taste buds, but, as the profile develops, the PW hop notes develop into something really impressive - sweet tangerine, grapefruit, pine and resinous qualities predominate; on the backend, there is a likely Marris Otter biscuity/bready malt backbone and some alcohol for balancing; finishes dry, which invites subsequent sips;

M: 5/5 - big body and high hop oils coating the tongue, alcohols provide fullness and balance; I'd urge that this is one of the best aspects of this beer

O: 9/10 - Union Jack on steroids; what a great imperial IPA from one of my favorite breweries who, I can honestly say, doesn't ever seem to release even a mediocre beer

TOTAL - 44/50

22oz. bottle poured into a tulip.

A: Pours a brilliant deep, dark gold, almost a light amber. Crystal clear. Head is stark white and subtle. Low retention but nice lace forming in arcs.

S: Instant resiny hops on the nose with warm spicy citrus of orange and tangerine. Cedar and spice, clove, cinnamon, as well...strangely. The citrus is REALLY center stage here, dominating the show. I could smell this for hours.

T: Yum! What a cool beer. Initially there's substantial hoppy resin, like a cedar grove in summer, giving way to a delicate pale malt foundation offering the slightest hint of grain and toast--but not biscuity. It then feels as though the taste is going to give way to a hoppy, bitter finish, but it's well-rounded off with more complex malt and some lively spice embellishments.

M: I wouldn't want it any other way. Medium body with a bright, crisp snap. No perceived evidence of the ABV.

O: Damn. This is a good beer. A contender for Pliny, say I. It's a new standard for me. Beers like this make you want to review with poetry. No joke. It's dimensional and mobile, dynamic and volatile. The malt literally feels like rhythm and supporting chords beneath a hoppy melody. Seriously.

Bottled on 12-20-13 and drank on 3-2-2014

Poured from a bomber into a pint glass

A - very translucent gold. Not much head that turns into a thin lace very quickly. It looks good but nothing to write home about.

S- Pine and resin hit the nose hard on this one. Hint of lemon and sweet pineapple. There's a very prominent "thick" sugary smell with it as well.

T - sweet malt and sugar hit first followed by a piney bitterness that sits in the depth of your tongue for a while. There are also hints of lemon and other citrus fruits. However, the most prominent taste in this beer are sweet malt and piney resin. Very good though.

M - lightly carbonated with a bitter after finish. goes down smooth and fills your cheeks with sweetness.

O - very delicious, a sweet malty pine with a resiny aftertaste. A well crafted beer that really brings the definition of a good IPA to life. Highly recommended.

Appearance: high carbonation, 1 inch head, clear, gold in color

Smell: citrus hops with grapefruit

Taste: citrus hops, grapefruit, faint cedar, and toasted malt

Mouthfeel: sweet with gentle bitterness running throughout, light body, high carbonation

Overall: A very juicy and tasty double IPA. The alcohol is not overly noticeable making this one that sneaks up. High quality beer that I am glad I got a four pack of. I think this is very good value for such a tasty IPA. Will be a go to double IPA.
