Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a tulip.

Double Jack is golden in color, with a little bit of a tangerine orange tint. A sizable off-white head rolls up the side of the glass with the initial pour and leaves a nice web of sticky lace as the glass is consumed.

What I notice about the aroma is how well the different components come together. Grapefruit citrus, resin, spicy pine, a bit of tropical fruit, and some light sweet malt notes come through. The emphasis is clearly on the hops, as it should be.

The flavor is hop-forward as well with a subtle transition between the flavors. At first some honey and pale malt come through, but that is quickly washed away by the wave of hop flavors. Bitter grapefruit pith, orange rind, herbal notes, and spicy pine come through, with a bit of grassy bitterness and caramel sweetness right at the end.

How this beer feels on my palate is one of its strengths. Not an overly full body, Double Jack is comfortable with a slightly fuller than medium body that lets the alcohol come through. A gentle yet firm creamy carbonation mostly cleanses the tongue between each sip but leaves some hop residue as a reminder of the bitterness. There is some residual hop oil and malt stickiness as well.

It took only one sip to be able to tell this was a high quality DIPA, and I expect nothing less from Firestone Walker. Although I appreciate the nuanced bitterness and well-crafted nature of this beer, my true favorites are recklessly bold and do not impart much subtlety.
