Thanks to portia99 for this one! Poured from a bomber into a weizen glass (yeah, yeah). Bright copper with exceptional clarity, certainly much clearer than you would expect to see from a DIPA. A light-khaki colored head tops this one off; thick, fluffy, and creamy - decent retention and decent lacing.

The aroma is warming to the senses as soon as you begin to bring your face close to the glass - spicy pines and big earthy hops take charge on this. Some fruits in the background of the aroma also; grapefruit, pear, pineapple, and maybe some other types of citrus or tropical fruit. The malt provides a warm, bready smell with a bit of toasty caramel for good measure.

Right from the start, Double Jack shows its heavy, malty backbone which combats the hop profile and certainly holds its own. Bready, estery, earthy, a touch musky, and spicy, almost like clove or pepper. Hop profile consists of a bitter resin, also slightly spicy with heavy accents on the wet, pine flavors. The body is thick and heavy, accentuating the hop oil flavors. Slightly dank near the tail end.

Fruits come out a little more during the latter half of the glass - pineapple and grapefruit are the most easily identifiable. The citrus profile shows more of a bitter, pith and peel flavor, but still contributes some sweetness to the brew. A mild onion/garlic flavor sneaks its way in there, too, but is mellow enough to actually help the flavor rather than hinder it. Carbonation is pretty liberal, body is slightly sticky and pretty heavy.

Very solid DIPA - reminded me a little bit of Double Simcoe with the spiciness and malt flavors. This was much smoother and had a more friendly hop profile, complete with more fruitiness as well. I enjoyed it a bit but think it still may be a touch overrated. Extremely solid on all levels, though.

Into a tulip glass. Two and half fingers of head with great retention. The body is a clear, medium straw color.
The aroma is grapefruit with a touch of orange. Nice.
The taste is a bold bitterness beginning to end with a touch of honey at the end. It’s a great DIPA profile with just enough sweetness.
A crisp texture with moderate carbonation and medium body.
A really nice DIPA.

(A ) Very little head/carbonation that quickly fades. Good lacing. Color is a bright and light Orange. Very clear, no haze whatsoever.

(S) Lots of floral and citrus! Very, very nice.

(T) Floral and citrus are there and the bitterness comes out balanced well by a nice malt sweetness. I can def taste some of the 9+% alcohol in this one but its not overwhelming by any means. Pretty balanced. One of the best IIPA's Ive had.

(M) Body is heavier then I thought from the appearance. Very sooth and easy to drink. Nothing to complain about here!

Overall its a really good IIPA. As far as CA IIPA's go, Id say this the best one thats pretty easily available in bottles. I would love to have this fresh on tap some day!

12oz bottle poured into a tulip. 12/17/12 on the bottle.

A: Pours a clear golden amber with a 2 finger dense white head. Tons of bubbles spiraling to the surface. Some good splotches of lacing. Head fizzles to a covering where it remains for the glass.

S: Sweet hoppiness right off the bat. Grapefruit and other citrus as well as a dank earthiness. Ripe fruits from the malts give it sweet characteristics. Very enticing.

T: Certainly a bold hopping up front but it is a well balanced assault of hops. Loads of fruit blend with a strong malt backbone for a good sweetness. Hops come back upon the finish but more of a sweet aftertaste.

M: Medium to thick body with a good nectar quality. A little bit sticky but it goes well with the flavor. Booze isnt too hot but certainly warming.

Overall always a phenomenal double IPA. Was glad to see these 12oz bottles as it is not as much of a splurge now to enjoy this beer.

Bottled 12/26/13 so a month old isn't too bad. The price could be better I snagged a single for 5 bucks at the House of 1,00 beers. BTW it was the 12oz bottle so I did not get a good deal!

(A ) Very lively with a ton of carbonation bubbles holding the 1/2 inch of head in place. As expected the lacing is thick and hugs the glass nicely. Curious of the color since most IPA's have a brown tint this one is more of a bright clear Orange yellow color.
(S) Every sniff is different with floral and citrus hops in the bottle and in the glass I can smell the pear like sweet hops and some alcohol but as it sits the alcohol smell takes a backseat.
(T) Well for a month old it's still sweet like taking a bite out of a Honeydew Melon filled with bittering hops. The hops are perfectly balanced with the sugar/gram crack malts giving no lingering bitter finish yet still pungent enough to block any alcohol flavors on the tongue. Just like the regular Jack the taste is clean.
(M) Medium to heavy in body I couldn't imagine having a few back to back. Would end up like the Hopslam growler that one time. Warms the empty belly of mine!

Overall outstanding yet kind of heavy to session. A league of it's own in the IPA game!
