Glad to snag a couple bottles of this. Poured from the bottle into an oversized wine glass.
It pours a clear near-black with chocolate brown highlights. A two-finger tan head emerges rapidly, but just as quickly dies off to a collar. Nice.
Smell is quite good. Rich dark chocolate, vanilla, oak, and alcohol heat. Surprisingly understated though - these aromas play off in the distance. If everything was a bit more up-front, I would probably give this a perfect 5. But then, maybe I'm just too much of a peasant to appreciate the subtleties.
This tastes excellent. The first thing that struck me was just how chocolaty this brew is. It's very surprising, and unlike any of the other Firestone Anniversary ales I've had so far. Even 12, which was about the same proportion of Parabola as this one was (so far as I can remember). Rich, artisanal dark chocolate plays the key role, with vanilla, oak, (very slight) heat, and some sweet dark fruit (dates?) playing supporting roles. Very nice. Brownies! That's it, there is a definite brownie component to this brew. Excellent.
Mouthfeel is similarly good. It's somewhere between medium- and full-bodied. Sticky, with a long, lasting hot chocolate finish.
If it wouldn't ruin my day tomorrow I could drink liters of this stuff. It's not too hot nor too sweet to be tough to drink. My half of the bottle was gone much faster than I anticipated. Offhandedly, I would say that I enjoyed this more than the FW12. My experience with FW10 and FW11 has been a little more limited, so I am not comfortable with making a comparison with those brews.
In any case, this beer is excellent. Well worth the price tag. Matt and Co. do not disappoint. Now, for f*!@'s sake, bottle Parabola already!

I tasted this as part of a flight at an epic bottle share. The review is from my notes, based on at least 1 ounce and at most 2 ounce pours. In most instances this would be an insignificant sample size but considering the fact that I could quite possibly never even see this beer again, well, I couldn’t pass it up. [This is my standard intro to my tasting notes from the series.]
This poured a solid black with a cocoa-colored layer on top. I get a lot of dark chocolates and an Italian roast/espresso aroma. There’s a pronounced flavor of bitter chocolate, a lot of roast, some bourbon on it, maybe a hint of a maple sweetness. There’s still a touch of heat to this but overall the flavors have blended quite well. So delicious.
