Appearance - Pours dark brown with a slight red tinge and a razor thin khaki head at it's peak. Quick dissipation results in a near flat surface, with exception to the fair ring of suds encircling the edge of the glass. No lacing, but none expected for a brew like this.
Smell - Simply beautiful. A vinous fragrance intertwined with deep caramel and lesser chocolate notes. Oak and leather earthiness rounds out the aroma nicely.
Taste - Follows the nose. A vinous/raisin fruitiness playing nicely off a deep caramel undertone. Touches of cola that come through more as the brew warms. Strong oak and earthy qualities begin to come through mid-taste, leaving a finish that's sweet, but better balance than what's found at the start. Tobacco leaf spice really starts to come through once the beer hits room temp.
Mouthfeel - Full in body with low carbonation. Thins out in the finish, giving it a lighter feel overall. Stupid smooth for 13%, with just a touch of heat and belly warmth in the finish.
Overall - Man, this is a hell of a brew. I'm not a big Quad fan because I find them cloyingly sweet and with too syrupy a body. Conversely I find many BA brews suffer from beer that may not be big and complex enough to withstand the Barrel Aging process, leaving an end product that's overwrought with too much booziness. To me this is one is a perfect marriage. Big flavors that aren't overwhelmed by the bourbon influence, while the normally thick and syrupy Quad body is thinned out nicely, delivering a smooth and approachable quality of drink. The end result is something like a BA blended barleywine, and it's wonderful. Glad I picked up a 2nd bottle for aging... should be fun to re-visit!

A: Deep brown in color. The head was tan/white and dissipated quickly.
S: Rich Belgian malts, toffee, tobacco, dates, and charred caramel.
T: Everything that a Quad should be. Big, bold, and flavorful. Sweet malts, great bourbon notes, and a crisp touch of Belgian yeast esters.
M: Big and rounded on the palate. Doesn't leave the mouth too fatigued.
O: Awesome beer. Will definitely drink again.
