From EBF notes. Had a few pours of this one.

a - Pours a deep reddish brown color with one inch of off white head and moderate carbonation evident.

s - Smells of bourbon, caramel malts, some roasted malts, oak, vanilla, toffee, some sweet dark fruits, and toasted malts. Very nice; not quite what I was expecting from an amber ale.

t - Tastes of bourbon, roasted malts, caramel malts, toffee, vanilla, oak, toasted malts, grains, and bready malts. No fruit but sweet again. Reminds me of a BA barleywine.

m - Medium body and low carbonation. Body is super smooth and doesn't feel like it is 12% ABV.

o - Overall I really liked this one, as did the others I was with; was one of the highlights for me at the Saturday session. Was hesitant with a BA amber ale as I've had a few and not liked them, but this was great. Nice bourbon to it; reminded me more of a barleywine to be honest. Would love to see them bottle this sometime.

Consumed on November 10th, 2010 at Blue Palms, Hollywood, CA.

Deep peach/copper color. Low carbonation.

Little aroma, save for a fleeting note of soap.

Flavor is relatively light and sweet. Evaporative, almost. Some oak notes and a touch of caramel and crystal malt. Vague resiny character (from hops?) but very restrained. As the bottom of the glass gets closer, booze notes and more bitter and herbal hop flavors emerge.

Mouthfeel unremarkable.

Surprised at the relatively mild (bordering on absent) flavor of this 11% brew.

From Firestone's website: "This Imperial Amber Ale (is there really such a thing?) had been aged in rye whiskey and bourbon barrels..." (http://beta.firestonebeer.com/blogs/otherside/files/12_fact_sheet.pdf)

Sampled this at the Firestone 14 release yesterday in Paso Robles, CA. The following review is based on notes taken by me, Wiseman Nick.

Served in a small (~5oz.) Firestone Walker snifter.

Appearance: Bright amber, translucent body with a tight, off-white halo perched atop. Really like the color. Great head retention.

Smell: Sweet crystal malts, booze, leafy vegetation, and semi-astringent esters. Bourbon and rye whiskey really shine through, but sort of work with the large grainy backbone.

Taste: Follows the smell almost exactly: crystal malt backbone with leafy greens and lots of booze. High alcohol makes for a hot and dry finish that lingers deep into the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel: Warm, malty, sweet, and medium-bodied. A bit too much boozy heat for an imperial amber; the body and flavor profile aren't enough to match it.

Drinkability: An interesting beer, but also an intense and seemingly incomplete one. I can understand why Firestone doesn't release this one too often.

Serving type: on-tap
