Enjoyed in a cask at the Firestone tap takeover at Flanny's. poured into a shaker pint.

Honey-colored, and with about the same clarity. Very thin, soapy off-white head.

Bright nose. Grass, citrus, funky orange and grapefruit. Some caramelized sugar. A touch of biscuits.

A more rounded flavor, less biting than the standard Jack. Some tropical notes now -- a little pineapple, a touch of apricot. Lots of grass and grapefruit and orange. Smoother finish with a little sugar and more biscuit than usual.

Smooth, round medium body. More carbonation than expected, prickly. Beautiful heft.

I like it -- a more balanced Jack. Who needs filtration anyway?

Firestone released two new variations of Union Jack to kick off American Craft Beer Week: Unfiltered Union Jack and Wet-Hopped Unfiltered Union Jack. Both were served from the firkin; the wet-hopped version at the brewery on Monday, May 16th, and the non wet-hopped version at Spike's (in San Luis Obispo) on Tuesday, May 17th. I ordered just a single pint of this at Spike's tonight, but I would've stayed for more if I wasn't so bogged down with school work.

Served in a Firestone nonic.

Appearance: Golden-amber in color with surprisingly nice clarity for an unfiltered beer. Following the pull, a gorgeous mound of dense, white fluff perched on top of the beer, and stayed there for a good ten minutes. Notch-like lace all the way down the glass. What else can I say? Beautiful!

Smell: The firkin always dulls aromas for me, and this was no exception. Deep inhales brought up shades of the Union Jack I'm used to: hunks of juicy pineapple and grapefruit mixed with bold pine resin and crystal malt sweetness. The malty and earthy tones shine through a bit more in the nose though - just a bit. Pretty enjoyable, even if it was mild.

Taste: Crystal malts kick things off, grapefruit follows, and then earthy, piney bitterness presents the final blow. Alcohol peeks through a bit more in this cask version, possibly due to the lowered carbonation and warmer temperature. I've found that many IPAs become unbearably bitter on cask - not so with this one; it maintains a very enjoyable balance.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied, well-balanced, and impeccably smooth. The cask rounds out the finishing bite, and in my opinion makes Union Jack even more drinkable. Nicely put together for a cask IPA.

Drinkability: While I prefer regular draft Union Jack, this was a nice twist. Worth a try if you get the chance.
