Updated from 2013:
I tasted this as part of a flight at an epic bottle share. The review is from my notes, based on at least 1 ounce and at most 2 ounce pours. In most instances this would be an insignificant sample size but considering the fact that I could quite possibly never even see this beer again, well, I couldn’t pass it up. [This is my standard intro to my tasting notes from the series.]
This pours a dark caramel hue, like a malty amber orange brown. Great lacing!
I get a lighter aroma than other offerings, with a subdued caramel malt, touch of candied orange and a light hint of stone fruits. The flavor has notes of vanilla and toasted coconut, along with a subdued malty-candied orange. There’s a bit more booziness in this as well.
This year’s vintage is a blended barleywine and it’s absolutely fantastic. Drink it now, or save some to sit on—but definitely try it!
This pours a rich caramel color, a light molasses-tan in the light. It smells fantastic--sweet, with a light caramel and some toasted coconut. It’s flavor is just as fantastic—such a rich, intense, rounded, flavorful barleywine, with caramel, coconut, a rich maltiness and warming alcohol that doesn’t dominate. Smooth, even young. Light and delicate, for a barleywine, yet lingering. Followed my first snifter with another—to share. Could have had a third, easily. Yum.
