Strong Wild Ale- Once a Liberal Party politician in the U.K., the “Viscount Esher,” aka Reginald Brett, left a strong impression on his native England as this latest offering from Barrelworks will leave with you. Yet another Barrelworks creation with DBA roots, this beer begins as Double DBA and is selectively matured in bourbon barrels for several months. A further 18 months of secondary fermentation and additional maturation in French and American oak barrels creates unparalleled depth and complexity. This hefty brew is brimming with a full spectrum of flavors and aromas: Nutty sherry aromas mingle with Oak, then give way to a Cointreau-like boozy orange zest. Tart cherries linger as the acidity builds on the palate. Vanilla, nutmeg, and cinnamon provide a supporting cast. The whole experience is reminiscent of a Manhattan cocktail. To be sipped and savored. A santé!

Orange with some white foam.
Hay bell.
Generic berry and something like orange jolly rancher but also notably malty. Close to medicinal but not quite. Didn't expect to enjoy a brett beer that's not a saison.
No pucker, no astringency.

All around a great beer. I love that the base was bourbon barrel aged, and then they add the sour bugs later. It was reminiscent of manhattan flavors, as advertised.

A pretty fun riff on DDBA, this time pumped up w/ Brett. Lots of dark fruit on display, fig-like, a bit of leather and a healthy dose of alcohol. Sort of an umber color, very thin, dissipating head, quite clear, nothing in the way of this big, boisterous onslaught. Goodly hit of bourbon barrel alongside lightly phenolic Brett notes. Something almost vinuous. It's a wild ride, but pretty darn fun and, as per usual with FW, completely well done.

Sampled at CBC 2016 - day 2. Plenty of bourbon, oak notes, a bit of brett dryness. Excellent.
