22 oz bottle into a Hoffman House chalice. Bottled on 8/21/12.
A - Very dark red to brown with a large, brownish, tightly packed head. Hazy under intense light.
S - Massive citrus, resin, pine and fresh cut grass. Wow.
T - Initially almost gives a soft malt impression, followed quickly by resiny, sticky green hops. Slight roast as the flavors transition with a spicy rye note. Finish has deep plum and apricot esters with strong, clean bitterness. Dark chocolate impression as it warms. Piney hop flavors in the ending.
M - Medium body, mild carbonation. Bone dry finish.
O - This is what a black IPA is supposed to be. The rye adds a restrained spicy note, and the hop bitterness balances perfectly with the roast, making it a continuum of bitterness. My favorite part of this beer is the initial aroma hit - unmistakably american.
