Appearance - Pours opaque black with ruby brown edging where light can penetrate. Head is light tan, a little less than 2 fingers thick, and with good retention. Leaves a firm layer of microbubbles atop the surface. Strong lacing around the glass, with good stick.
Smell - Aroma hits on strong notes of grapefruit, pine, peppery rye, and touches on toffee sweetness.
Taste - Starts, and ends, with a lot of grapefruit hop character eith lesser pine. Moderate pith bitterness. Malts are subtle, nearly hidden in fact, but what does come across is toffee, caramel and with ghostly traces of mocha, mostly mid-taste and toward the finish, touches of smoke, and then the rye hits. The aftertaste imparts a nice peppery rye spiciness.
Mouthfeel - Medium bodied, with lively carbonation. Smooth. Somewhat creamy, though nowhere near that of a stout. Goes down with relative ease. Somewhat chalky on the finish. The 8.3% is well hidden.
Overall - My second pass at this beer, and I'm enjoying it more so than the first attempt. Not quite the ideal amount of roasted malt character I look for in what, in my mind, is needed for the perfect black IPA, but it's a marvelous brew nonetheless; one that continues to grow on me the more I have it.
