SPECIAL FISHING EDITION RE-REVIEW (didn't catch anything :() After having a fresh bottle, I'd say this is the best black ale I've ever had. Why? Because it doesn't really taste like a black ale - it tastes like a spicy, rye-forward IPA where the dark malts only serve to both dry and clean its finish up. The hops brilliantly accentuate the spicy rye character, rather than clash with overdone stout-like sweetness. I'd even say this does to black ales what Nugget Nectar does to amber ales - it makes them look pathetically outdated. Even after having Parabola and Sucaba, I'd gladly call this Firestone Walker's best brew, easily.

---

Thanks to Momar42 for the bottle! About 6 oz poured into a Duvel tulip.

A: Pours a very dark brown color. The head is a one finger offwhite color with somewhat thick bubbles and good retention.

S: Fairly citrusy, but with that green piny note to it - Simcoe hops, perhaps? The darker malts don't really come through, but the citrusy profile redeems things.

T: Much like the aroma, the citrusy flavors come through strongly. The first few sips are a bit questionable in its balance and drinkability, but once this opens up, it becomes quite pleasant in conjunction with the rye malts. Further sips show some chocolate in its profile. This *is* an older bottle, but still very enjoyable, if a little lacking in complexity.

M: Pretty dry - thank you rye malts - and drinkable. It's not too heavy or light either way in terms or body, nor is it overcarbonated.

O: It's another "man, this could have been AMAZING" fresh situation with this. Right now, though, it's still really damn good. I'll be on the lookout for a fresh bottle/keg of this.

Bomber poured into a pint glass

A: black pour with lots of head. Good retention and lacing . Head is white/ brown.

S: slight burnt notes, lots of citrus hops though in addition. Earthy tones also. Sweet fragrant hops not dank

T: like it a lot. Hops up front. Certainly an IPA with plenty of flavor. Complex though with burnt char slight acrid taste. Lots of fruity overtones also. Slight chocolate and molasses.

M: full slight chewy tone. A good amount of carbonation. Not stout like at all. Again it's an IPA thru and thru.

O: excellent brew. Many different favors that work together. Better than mist regular IPA or DIPA. Rye comes through in a way similar to Sucks but that burnt taste really caps it off.

Serving- bottle into a tumbler

Appearance- wonderful rich, ebony with a slight ruby around the edge. Finger and a half of a tan head.

Nose- A very wonderful aroma of dark hops. Not fruity but more piney, spicy and perhaps grassy.

Mouthfeel- Medium with a smooth finish.

Taste- Extremely well balanced. I anticipated a flavor much more lopsided toward the hops, but this beer showcases all that is good with a Cascadian Dark Ale; sturdy malt backbone on which the hops ride and showcase their beauty. It is bitter but not so overpowering you don't get good notes of dark malt, too. Dry and not too sweet. Dark, piney hops.

Overall- Really perfect for a CDA. I mean, I don't really have any faults with this beer. You can tell it is made of good stuff and it isn't so lopsided with either the malt/alcohol or hop bitterness. I could see anyone who enjoys bitter beers but isn't a total hophead convert to like this treat.

This pours a thick brown that is practically black except when examined under a penetrating light That will only reveal the true color but is still impenetrable. The head is alight tan that is thick and leaves a very full lacing down the glass.

The nose is a spicy malt wit the hops being nicely dominant and pleasantly balanced with the smokiness, chocolate and coffee notes that result from the rich malt.

The taste is a very strong blending of hops that is very bitter riding on a semi-sweet to dry malt that has the similar notes of chocolate, coffee and some hints of molasses and spice with a sharp hop bite up front that fades to a pleasant hop finish.

The mouthfeel is just right for this brew with it being full and flavorful but not too heavy.

Overall, this is a very drinkable beer and is very enjoyable. I highly recommend this one.

A good drinking draft and spot on black IPA solid offering. Very good, another solid Firestone Walker offering. Black bodied, assertive carbonation. Average mouthfeel. Solid hops, solid roast, anise. Rye spice adds some edge. Roast aroma. Significant grapefruit.

Appearance is a very dark brown, almost black, unfiltered, nice lacing. Aroma is hops, grapefruit, pine, a bit of caramel, very nice. Flavor is okey, piney, dark roasted malt, a bit of coffee and caramel. I feel like I'm in the lumber yard and inhaling deeply with my mouth open. Mouthfeel is medium thick, not quite chewy. Overall the is an outstanding black IPA, a style I am not familiar with.
