Glass Used: Nonic pint
Appearance: Black but not opaque; holding it up to the light you see twinkles of dark garnet. On top a long lasting tightly packed small-medium sized bubbled root beer float foam colored head. Lacing is great leaving webs of foam in it's wake.
Smell: Piney citrus hops, spicy rye and roasted malts. The longer it sat and warmed the more of the roasted aromas came through.
Taste: Lovely rye spiciness with complex roasted malts imparting some bitter chocolate notes before the resiny hops charges through making their presence known. The bitterness of a stout and IPA unite leaving a pleasant bitter finish.
Mouthfeel: Soft and velvety. Coats the mouth nicely; nice carbonation.
Overall: This is my first black ale which really appeals to me as it combines the flavor profiles of two of my favorites styles. The finish on this beer is amazing. I find myself savoring both flavors of a stout and IPA well after I've finish the swig. If you are a fan of both IPAs and Stouts, get this. Don't procrastinate like I did. Just get it and dwell in it's tastiness.
