A stunning American Black Ale! Bottle picked up at the brewery in November. Pours a murky dark auburn that's approaching black, with a surprisingly light coloured head.
Knock-out aroma of pure "west-coast" hops. Wish I could name the specific hop medley, but no simple terms like pine/citrus/mango even begin to give this credit - it's none of those standards while presenting the best of all of them and perfectly balanced with its chocolate malt supporting cast.
The flavour is also hop-forward, with dark roasted malts fleshing out the body and rye notes most evident during the bitter finish. The 8.3% ABV is very well hidden - I hadn't read the bottle and had no idea until logging in to BA - with only a hint of alcohol warmth near the end.
Very sad to only have one bottle. Highly, highly recommend!

Grabbed this in a trade back in mid spring 2014. Review taken from notes: Spring 2014. I must say it sucks not getting Firestone Walker stuff here in Kentucky at the moment.
1 pint, 6 oz brown bomber with a traditional Firestone Walker Reserve series label and a small black foil wrap around the cap. Elegant white, gold, black and grey make up the colors on this exceptional label. The traditional Lion and Bear grace the bottom corners as usual and really set off another fantastic design from FW. Poured into a Firestone Walker Proprietors Reserve stemmed tulip glass.
A - black in color on the pour and a dark midnight looking red when held to the light with a crisp splash of brown. Creamy tan colored head that sits with some size before settling to a creamy and thick ring of lacing leaving superb stick to the glass.
S - pine and grapefruit hop aromas up front. The rich malt let off a balanced aroma of coffee and chocolate. A lovely dark fruit character going on here. The rye lets off some spice that pair well with the strong hop resin you find in the first few whiffs.
T - this is where Wookey Jack really shows its class. Big pine and grapefruit hops to start followed quickly by a bang of rich, black roasted coffee beans and only a small hint of bitter chocolate. This has a real roasted malt backbone along with an insanely grand spicy rye character. It's west coast fruity, but the roasted malt and rye spices let off some truly remarkable flavors. Sensational.
M - medium full in body and a sticky thick coating that's just right. Typical Firestone texture makes for a very delicious mouthfeel. This is a treat.
O - one of the best black ipa's I've had with all the great qualities of the style but also hitting the mark of differences as well with the rye and spice. This is probably the most drinkable black ipa I've had and one ill trade for again when its time. It actually saddens me I can't have this at my fingertips whenever I want it. The FW quality is there, the west coast style as well, but the roasted rich malt and rye characters throw you for a one of a kind experience. It's as perfect as the style can get.
