Purchased 650 ml from High Spirits in Providence, RI. Poured into standard pint glass.
Pours black. Frothy with 2 fingers of head. Smells of hops, resin, dark malts, slight chocolate and coffee notes.
Initial thought is that this is unique brew. You get rye spiciness and hops and bitterness up front and dark chocolate and burnt coffee with the finish.
Black IPA is starting to become a vague and broad beer varietal. You could label this a dark ale, black ale or black ipa very easily. Tastes like a rye ipa stout hybrid. The alcohol is noticeable but this is a relatively smooth 8.3%. One of the most unique beers I've enjoyed in 2012. Big fan of Firestone Walker and this does not disappoint.
