14oz tulip at Rattle N Hum in Manhattan.

Appearance: Black with a long lasting tan head that leaves a wall of lacing.

Smell: Piercingly weed-like earthy, pungent hop aroma. Some tropical fruit dancing around the greenhouse quality of Citra hops. Smells fresh and good.

Taste: Explosively hop forward just like the nose. The earthy, dank quality of Citra. The fruitiness of Citra and Amarillo hops seems to be eaten up in the caramel and hearty bread malt backbone, but the hop fix up front is irresistible. Almost bitter and dry enough, but I'm not complaining. Some roasted malt under the caramel, but the hops (particularly the Citra) are the story here.

Mouthfeel: Full side of medium bodied. Despite the roasted malt bitterness contributing along with the IBUs, it tastes just a bit too sweet. Great canvas for the hop flavor otherwise.

Overall: This is a great version of a black IPA. Solid wall of caramel flavor and some roasted malt, decorated with masterfully dank hops. A homerun from Firestone Walker.

Serving type: on-tap

Dark brown/black with tan head. Medium- head retention.

Rye bread, clove, black licorice, candied orange peel. There is a strong artificial alcohol perfume note in this beer for me.

Deep resin quality, citrus, pine, bitter chocolate, coffee, ruby red grapefruit, marbled bread and an underlying sense of earth.

Medium-bodied with a tacky feel on the back of the palate. There is a fairly strong sense of alcoholic heat on the finish.

The beer is pretty heavy on the resin side.
