Great black rye ipa. Hop aroma up front followed by great coffee taste that ends with the dryness of rye. The blend of dry, from hops and rye, with the sensuousness of the coffee/malt in the middle make this top of the charts in this category. Imbibed at Burger Bar in Las Vegas.

650ml bottle dated 10/08/2014. Poured into a stemless glass 12/13/2014.

A- Dark cola body. Beautiful thick mocha head, about two fingers in height. Long retention time, eventually drops into a thick collar and moderately thick film, very easy to regenerate this with a few swirls of the glass. Looks volatile and nicely carbonated. Lots of lacing, like brown cumulus clouds.

S- Rich hop resins making for a floral and pine potpourri with possibly a bit of citrus (tangerines come to mind) on a background of mild roasted grain and a bit of milk chocolate. The hops are very forward here.

F- This does the hybrid blend of styles very nicely. Nice roast flavours, caramel and milk chocolate richness blend in well with a strong hop flavour- tangerines, oranges, floral notes with a bit of pine on the back end. It all comes together nicely in a way that doesn't lean too much towards either the porter or IPA style.

M- Medium bodied, appropriately carbonated. Fairly bitter, as expected. Finish is milk chocolate sweetness mixed in with citrus bitterness.

O- Very nice Black IPA. I'm not a huge fan of the style of beer in general, but so far this one has done what I feel is a good representation of the style as a discrete entity.

12 oz poured into a mug

a: very thick head with good retention and nice lacing. very dark brown

s: definitely some citrus - maybe grapefruit, and a little bit of spice

t: moderately roasted malts, sweet, solid hop bitterness peaking out, a little hint of rye warmth, then the roasted malts take over again in the finish. not much alcohol for the abv

m: fairly oily, but with good carbonation

o: there are a number things going on here and they all seem perfectly balanced. an inviting smell, some pretty disparate tastes that somehow pull together wonderfully, and a pleasing look. this one is a winner for sure.
