Pours a dark brown with a generous two inch beige head that morphs into eternal darkness in my chalice. Lacing is scant. Hop influenced head is very impressive.

Aroma not very profound. Tones of citrus and pine mainly.

Here's where the horses run otta the gate. Beautiful rye spice pronounced with a charred grain with some smoke. Citrus emerges with piney tars evident. Maybe it's just my mind but I'm also picking up on cocoa powder in the back.

Creamy mouthfeel and finishes with a snap-very crisp. Hops do linger throughout.

I've had this on and off in the past few years but lately been craving back for this. A spectacular all year round craft. I'm sure black ales are tough but this has been nailed. Really can't say enough fine things.

Bottled: 10/30/13
Appearance: Aggro pour from 22oz bomber into 16oz snifter yields a two finger café latte head that dissipates slowly into a thin layer. Thick and heavy lacing with nearly opaque, deep black cherry color and legs like a speed skater.

Aroma:Hops, spices, dark chocolate, coffee and mild caramel

Flavor: Dark chocolate, coffee, slight pine, rye spiciness, some biscuit? Very slight alcohol warming with medium bittering and slight astringency at the finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with dry/ bitter finish. Low active carbonation, very slight alcohol warming in the back. Slight astringency.

Opinion: I really like this beer. It’s very complex yet moderately session-able in spite of the fact of the 8.5 % ABV. I’m currently cellaring one and will probably do more.
