Large head with a brief upward cascading stream of bubbles. Settles in a lumpy fashion. The liquid is deep mahogany brown where light passes through along the edge. Plenty of fine and lumpy lace, resulting in many rings as I drink it.

Generous aroma of hop resin (half floral, half pine) and chocolate and black patent malts. There's a touch of sweetness, like dark cherries.

The rye really shows up in the taste. Astringent, with the black patent contributing to this as well. It's not coffee enough to be a dark porter or stout. Also, the pronounced hop really makes this a great hybrid of IPA and a Black Ale. Moderate aftertaste of bitter hop and burnt grains. Thick body but this may be more notable due to the very low level of carbonation. Still, the whole package works very well.

22oz black foil capped bottle, from Tipsy's (great name) Liquor World in Denver's far-flung west side.

This beer pours a solid brown-tinged black, with pervasive red cola highlights, and a tower of puffy, foamy and rocky beige head, which leaves some broadly spaced layers of sudsy ringed lace around the glass as it swiftly abates.

It smells of musty citrus and moldy forest floor pine coverings, gamey roast, lightly charred wet wood, bittersweet coffee, toasted caramel malt, a muted rye spiciness, an oily nuttiness, and further earthy, leafy hops. The taste is big and nutty in its roasted caramel malt backbone, almost equally matched in intensity by the clammy citrus, pine and floral hops, a bit of smoldering woody ash, a flavour-free coffee-like bitterness, a hint of dry cocoa, subdued dark rye booze graininess, and more dank earth.

The bubbles are a bit finicky, but dismissed easily enough, the body a heady medium weight, generally smooth, as the early clamminess gets ironed out somehow, and maybe a tad creamy. It finishes a bit on the sweet side, the roasted caramel, black rye, fruity hops, and simmering alcohol all a potent combo.

Like any situation where promoting the best qualities of a product where one's bias towards the perceived inherent flaws make said description pointless, I shall slog through and endeavor. So, this is indeed what it claims to be - black (i.e. 'burnt'), big and hoppy (the base IPA), and rye-offset (the use of additional rye malts). Oh, and approaching Imperial in alcohol strength - the integration there is something I can duly sign off on.

22oz bottle dated 9/20/13 $5.99. Dark black with a ridiculous head, I had to wait on it. Aroma was piney and had notes of orange and spice, super fresh hoppiness. Flavor was spicy, pine, citrus. Very well done for the style and the price is super reasonable.

22 oz. Bomber from Bevmo! for 5 bucks!

A: Jet black with an aggressive cream head! Great retention on this one!

S: Outstanding! One of the best smelling beers I've ever had! Getting tons of citrus, pine and oak! Pineapple, pine needles, peach, green apple, green grape, and orange!

Taste: Of the top comes a sweet malt that flows into a rye spicyness! Then comes the hops to give it that nice bitter IPA punch! Getting sweet malt, rye, Granny Smith, pineapple, orange, grapefruit, and a slight mellow oak ending! Reaches an almost cask like finish!

Mouthfeel: Rye spice to begin but mellows out to an almost creaminess! Supe smooth and goes down easy! Perfect carbonation!

O: Might seem like I'm gushing on this one but I truly enjoyed it this much! One of the best and most unique IPAs I've had! Black/rye IPAs are coming to be some what normal but this blows everything I've had in that category out of the water! Bench mark in IPAs and dominates the Black/rye IPA field for me! Do yourself a favor and pick this beauty up!

Edit: Had it on tap at Firestone Taproom and while the oak flavors are more hidden the freshness is incredible! Outstanding both ways! My taste buds would melt if I could find this one on cask!
