Bottle date was 12/27/13 poured on 3/3/2014

Poured from a bomber into a pint glass.

A- an almost opaque darl brown. Not much head but what is there is an off white lace that covers the top of the beer.

S- bitter roast with some charred notes. There is a sweet malt that resides very faintly behind the roast. There are also some bready notes in there. The smell is very addictive.

T- a thick bread taste overwhelms the palate at first. But then the roast takes over as the beer goes down. Very unexpected sweetness that i can't describe really well. Its like there is syrup mixed in with the bread. Very nuce touch. The finish is bitter that rests on your tongue for a good while

M- the carbonation has a bite to it while swirling around in the mouth. Goes down super smooth after that though.

O- i was not expecting this beer to beat out double jack but everytjing about this is good. Haven't had very many rye ipa but i will definitely have to try more of these.

22oz. bottle poured into a tulip.

A: Pours a boding jet black. Opaque. Only sign of light within bears the crimson glow of a fading forge. The head is tan to light brown. Full, like root beer. It clocked in around 3-4 fingers and retained for a while, leaving spotty constellations of lace upon its descent.

S: I've never smelled a beer like it. The hop aroma is basic boilerplate: piney, resiny, woodsy. Yet, its contrast with such a potent, merciless black malt is autopoietic. Tons of mild roast on the nose. Spicy, like old world bread with molasses.

T: The front drinks like an IPA, all piney, resiny hops. The middle displays a solid roasted and black malt structure but then gives way to a prominent spiciness. No doubt from the rye. The finish leaves you with a tenacious bitterness that lingers for some time. Chocolate begins to emerge as it warms.

M: Not as velvety as you would expect. The carbonation is playful , and there's no sign of alcohol.

O: A good beer, but confusing. It seems to fall a bit short of what the concept and appearance promises. Very drinkable though!

Aroma: Candied orange slices, medium spicy aroma, could be hops or malt bill. Nice sweet malt aroma. No DMS, no hot alcohol, faint diacetyl.

Appearance: dark brown to black with amber highlights. Tan head with pinpoint carbonation.

Taste: Starts light citrus in the front palate, very bitter spicy hop flavor in the mid and finishes dry with light alcohol. The bitterness is very pleasant and lingers for several seconds. Malt backbone is there to support the bitterness. Roast is really only there in the finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium heavy body that lingers on the tongue. No hot alcohol.

Overall: A great DIPA that would be hard to pick out as a black IPA if not for looking at it. Hides the alcohol well and the bitterness level is pleasant.

A..Very dark luscious black. Poured a good frothy and grey head. Not too much lacing though which surprised me with the head.

S..A somewhat unique scent being a black IPA and rye beer. Wasn't sure at first smell that I'd like it.

T..Well the taste was very good. There are certainly fruity tastes throughout, more than I would have expected. I think the fruitiness contributed to my initial thoughts when smelling, but the fruit essence works upon tasting. A good rye presence made me very happy.

M..Easy to drink. Not heavy in my opinion and almost a bit light/weak on the back end. Minimal carbonation. Very little sense this was 8%+ ABV.

O..I'd be happy to drink this again. Would think it might be tasty from the tap.
