Lost Abbey tulip

A: Tons of carbonation. Cork nearly popped out. Loud POP and pour was very head heavy, for sure. Pours a cloudy orange amber like color. Hazy as hell. Four fingers off white head. Sticks around forever. Leaving sticky lacing bits. Tons of lacing during drink.

S: Lots of tart dark cherries, first and foremost. I do get some woodyness for sure. Light vanilla mild notes come with that. Some tart funk notes too.

T: Up front you get that dark cherry tart flavor for sure. It's on the tip of the tongue, and sticks with you. High carbonation definitely leads through the palate as this one works through the mouth. Almost dances on your tongue as you repeat the sip.

M: Medium bodied. Highly carbed.

Thanks to ericandersnavy for sharing this bottle.

The beer pours a light amber color with a white head. The aroma is full of a lot of toffee with a little bit of dark fruit mixed in. There is not much sourness in the aroma.

The flavor has a little bit of funk in it, as well as some toffee and cherry notes. There is not too much sourness or tartness, but the funk adds some nice qualities to the beer.

Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Poured into a White Birch flute glass

Appearance: Deep reddish brown with no head unless poured aggressively, a small off white head will form and fade quickly.

Aroma: Slight tart and and sour, green apples, cherries and a nice amount of funkiness. I actually really enjoy the funk that is coming through.

Taste: Not as tart or sour as I was hoping for, a little bit more residual sweetness remaining then what I would prefer. Other then that there is a nice cherry characteristic with a really earthy balance.

Mouthfeel: Medium-light body with medium carbonation and a slightly sour finish, very drinkable for the 8% ABV.

Overall: Good offering from Darkside, could use some more improvement. I'll sit on my other bottles for a while, but it's nice that there is a brewer so close that makes sours.

Been sitting on this for a month or two, per the advice of the brewer.

I’ve had a number of corked and caged bottled beers where I’ve struggled to get them open—I think the Boulevard series is notorious for this, at least until you figure out the trick—but this one takes the prize for most difficult to open. Took two of us and about 10 minutes of struggling.

Pours with very little foam. The color of burnt amber, but hazy. Smells powerfully sweet with some tart and funk hitting your nose just around the margins. Tastes funky… First impact is just a heavy funk without any sour. Coats your mouth and hangs around for a while. You can definitely taste the alcohol—in fact, it tastes bigger than it actually it, almost hot. If it clocks in at only 8% then I’m hoping that it will mellow out with a little more time. I picked up three bottles of this so I’ll have a chance to see how it develops. It has potential, and I’m looking forward to seeing it improve with age.

Update: Mellowed out quite a bit over the course of a year. Much more enjoyable experience now. I still have one bottle left and I will report back on that once I crack it open.
