22 oz. bottle poured into 8 oz. tulip at the Epic Ale's taproom. July 2nd, 2011.

30% Vienna Malt, 70% Pale. According to the brewer, the plan was to age the beer in a Cab Franc barrel, but the beer instead has been aged with a chopped up Cab France barrel in it.

A: Dark brown ruby red. Thing tan head of foam.

S: Smoky champagne aroma.

T: Sour champagne with some caramel malt.

M: Sweet, low carbonation.

O: Very enjoyable sour. I purchased a bottle that day, so expect more thoughts on this beer in the future.

The last bottle opened at tonight's tasting... Thanks Jeremy... tannish head atop a slightly hazed deep amber.

Slightly acetic with good cherry fruitiness... a bit phenolic with some good pepper... a bit vinous.

Flavor is nice... slight roasty element with sour cherry and grape skin... interesting, but still pretty one dimensional ... pepper builds with warmth..

I actually dig this one... Jeremy and Sammy dogged it pretty hard, but I think it is a good jumping off point for sours.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle to an 8 oz tulip at Epic Ales tasting room (this review from my notes taken on 7/02/11).

Brewer noted the use of peppercorns, Vienna and Pale malts, as well as a chopped-up Cab Franc barrel.

A - Poured a clear dark red/orange with a 2-finger medium bubble tan head, that slowly dissipated to a small off-white head.

S - Rosy and floral scent, but mixed with a bit of tanginess/sourness, ending with a peppery finish.

T - Initiall spicy, the flavor transitions to a sour ale bite. Subtly briny.

M - Low carbonation, and smooth. Light to medium body.

D - An interesting dark brown and peppery sour ale. Probably great for pairing with food and slowly savored, but not to be used as a refreshing thirst-quencher.

Had this shipped from a trip to the PNW, Poured coppery brown into a Belgian ale glass, foaming up a couple of inches, but quickly dissipating. It did leave a little lacing. For an aroma, I could get caramel, some grass, and a lot of pepper. The initial taste started malty, overwhelmingly so, then sourness, finally a lot of pepper. Overall, not a bad experiment. I liked it, but wouldn't feel the need to buy it again.
