On tap at Cycle in downtown St. Petersburg. Poured to a tulip snifter. (Notes transcribed later, six days after taking them.)

Appearance (4.75): Delicately hazy, with a watermelon juice-colored body. One and a half fingers of white foam cap off the body, but die down slowly—especially for the style—leaving a thin film and a fuzzy, lacy collar at the surface. The body is so pretty, and considering this is a Berliner (those acidic beers tend to have very little lacing or retention), this is basically perfect, for the style.

Smell (4.5): Beautifully sour, with a lactic tang but without the yogurty funk that comes with some Berliners. The cherry note is both fruity-sweet and tangy-tart. Soft wheat—which I’m only just now remembering is more than likely unmalted—is clear, with an almost flapjack-like sweetness—but light enough to leave the spotlight on both the cherry and Berliner characteristics that govern this beer’s essence.

Taste (4.25): Straight on Berliner, perfectly executed, with the addition of tart, sweet red cherries. The wheat is floury-starchy, but with the soft fruitiness of wheat mixed into that breadiness. That wheat very nicely complements the cherry flavor, which feels softer than it would otherwise—it’s missing the tannic note that cherries can have, sometimes, especially if you drink cherry juice—thanks to the cutting sourness of Berlin. This makes for a great, great dynamic. Toward the finish, the almost limey acid takes over as it washes out.

Mouthfeel (5.0): This is perfection. The unmalted wheat really offers a beautiful counterpoint here. While the beer is dry, thanks to 3.5% ABV and lactic acid, the starchy feel of the wheat malt makes it feel fuller and more satisfying than a typical tart beer this small. Still light enough to session the shit out of, though. Carbonation is a thin, tingly film all over; body is medium-light.

Overall (4.5): A masterful Berliner, in my mind. Many other varieties could be made with other fruits—and I might prefer them, since I personally like many other fruits better than cherries—but the cherry sticks out for its gentle balance of sweet and tart, with light tannins. For the style, this beer is absolutely fantastic. And, it would be a great intro for non-sour drinkers. Highly recommended.
