On tap at Peg's Cantina. Served in a pint glass.

A - Small white head with little retention. Nice lacing, which is surprising for the style. Raspberry tinted cloudy body. I asked if it had syrup added, but they said no. Now I read reviews that says it does. I don't know what to think!

S - Acidic smell of lemons and oranges with the characteristic tartness of a Berliner Weiss. On point for the style. Behind that is a distinct smell of jelly.

T - Nice tart, light flavor. Raspberry sweetness in the middle. Crisp light finish. Tastes like it has syrup. How can it not?

M - Light to medium bodied. A little heavier that I'd like, really. Still brisk and it has nice tingly carbonation.

O - Delicious. Not what I expected, but very nice

This is an insanely good beer, quite possibly one of the best tasting and easiest drinking I have ever had. Growler was opened last night and enjoyed thoroughly throughout the evening. Consumed on 04/16/2010.

The pour was about what I would expect, deep mango in color with a light head of white on top that was quickly fading and left a light ring around the outside of the glass. Aroma is insane, huge lemon and citrus notes, tart as hell, rich fruit, wet straw, hay, horse funk all over this thing. Insane is an understatement, but then you take the first sip and it is over. Wonderful notes of tart fruit, lemons, hints of huge lime notes, tart cherries and almost raspberry notes. Incredibly sour with a huge and almost insurmountable tartness. Light airy body makes it go down like water and with the drying from the tart flavors, this was all too drinkable.

Overall of the easiest drinking and immensely sour beers I have ever enjoyed. I would want this on tap every day!

On tap at Peg’s during the Berliner Bash. Served in a mini snifter. Pours a light pinkish color with a fizzy white head. The nose carries a good dose of raspberry and a nice bit of lime in the background. Flavor pairs the two fruits quite well and adds in a nice bit of lactic acidity. Everything is nice and in balance. A really well done beer.

Drank this side by side with the double version.

A - A pink beer, transparent. When sat next to the double version it looks the same, just some how lighter like it was a watered down version. Not to say it looks watery, just a comparison. Small white head, some spots left on sides.

S - Raspberries with lime in a nice berliner presentation. Not really sure how else to qualify this, but it's great.

T - Really packs the flavor for a 3.9%. The name may be a suggestion, but as you get deep into this beer you do begin to realize it really tastes like jelly donut flavoring. The lime addition lightens the taste of the raspberries and gives it a somewhat sugar like quality while managing not to be overly sweet or artificial. Good tartness, nice flavor.

M - Light, good carbonation that adds some effervescence but manages not to be overly active.

O - Outstanding beer. I prefer the double version for it's more distinct flavors but this is very close. Can't go wrong with either, could drink this all the time. Between this and Jon Wakefield, and Funky Buddha, Florida seems to have the monopoly on kickass fruity berliners.

Thanks to Bobby8405 for the growler. I was worried I would miss out on this tasty treat...

A - Hazy golden-orange hue with a head that lasts less than three seconds. Berliner is such a strange beast.

S - Tart, sour, briny, and pickled; impressions of capers and olives and obviously heavy lactic. The citric sour tart comes through after a while, and is very heavily focused on sour lime.

T - This is one of the most sour beers out. The base beer is quite tart, but this is a step beyond. The Berliner Weisse style is exceptionally represented by this brew, if a bit non-traditionally. Heavy lactic sourness is punctuated by well-fused flavors of lime and raspberry. As for the lime, it is very familiar, as if you just took a big bite out of one. The raspberry is semi-apparent in tartness initially, but the sweeter essence is more available on the finish. Both flavors are subtle relative to their capacity to overwhelm, perhaps at least partially owing to the tremendously strong sour flavor of this brew. Despite the pungency, it is also exceptionally refreshing.

M - Light-bodied and refreshing.

D - This is one of the most tart and pungent brews I've encountered. I love it.

Review from the 5th of July during my visit to Pegs. This was not on the draft list but was served to me in a snifter by Doug. I cannot fully express my level of appreciation and gratitude. This was a beer I wanted to try since my infant days of berliner weisse infatuation.

The brew appears a clouded pink color with faint hazy particulate stuck in suspension. A white patchy head sits atop and fades fairly quickly in typical berliner fashion. As it fades, it leaves spots of lacing effect on the glassware.

The smell is full of citrus character like raspberry sweet tart candy. It is bright and somewhat "seedy" like the earthen aspect of raspberry seeds. It is very natural smelling with a lemony lactic character bringing forth a brightness of lemon to the fruit quality. It almost displays a touch of spice like celery seed and more earthy aspects as it warms up.

The taste is tart, actually it is quite tart to the point of being sour/acidic. It takes awhile for the palate to become accustomed to this. Whereas the nose of this brew seemingly immediately hinted towards raspberry, it is much more subtle in the flavor with just a faint raspberry seedy quality. It is earthy and lightly herbal that really integrates well with the lemony lactic aspects giving it a nice range of complexity.

This is a light bodied brew with a modest amount of carbonation. It is super easy drinking with no alcohol impact. It is downright one of the best fruited berliners I have ever tried. The raspberry quality addsc a dimension of flavor that really works in the berliner without distracting and providing any residual sweetness. If given the opportunity, I would drink this regularly. Unfortunately, it sounds as though there are no plans to brew this again.

On-tap at Peg's.

A - Pours a hazy pinkish/red, white head, thin collar.

S - Fruity tartness, lots of funky stuff going on here as well, not much of a berliner and more of an american wild to me. That said, I don't care...I like it.

T - For 3.9%, this stuff is super complex. The sugary fruity notes can be picked out as a jelly filling, which is really cool. Not sure about the donut, but hey, I don't want that in my beer anyway. There's a solid amount of funky tart notes as well. Finish is tart and fruity.

M - Light, crisp, refreshing, good carbonation, dry tart finish.

O - I liked this one better the the double version and would drink it all day long and twice on Sunday's. Peg's is one of my favorite breweries in the country, and that's saying a lot. Doug is one of the nicest dudes ever, so that helps too. Good stuff!

The standard Peg's Berliner with the addition of Lime and Raspberry.

A: Pours a somewhat hazy yellow with tones of red showing through. No head at all.

S: Nice aromas. I loved the standard version and the kicked up version is unique for sure. Tart citrus, wet straw, and a bit of grainy bread.

T: Holy citrus. Tons of very very tart lemon. Mild tones of powered lime gatorade. There is just a touch of grain. The raspberry don't really stand out, but I am sure it has added to this bold sourness I am enjoying. Hints of wet straw with a nice acidic bite.

M: Rather light in body. Rather tart from start to finish.

D: Another awesome offering by Doug. For a guy who just started playing with sours he is doing a real nice job. Tons of flavor and tartness packed into this little beer. On the upper end of beers when it comes to sourness. The fact that it is a Berliner is quite impressive.

I would love to have it on draft during the hot summer months. Who needs lemonade when you can have this.

Update returned to Peg's this weekend and Doug pulled out Batch 2 of this gem for me to try. All I can say is wow. He improved on an already great beer. The Raspberry has been ramped up with this batch. The tart with mildly sweet notes of raspberry really comes through. It melds wonderfully with the lime, lemon, and slight brine. He took a great beer and knocked it out of the park. I was blown away this time, and my rating will reflect such.
