Pours a clear dark brown amber with film of light than head, minimal lacing leaving some oily legs behind in the glass. Caramel, brown sugar, dark fruit, vanilla, oak, and molasses blend nicely in the nose; very reminiscent of BB4D as mentioned by Mike below. Incredibly smooth, balanced body and texture of bourbon and vanilla with the sugary and caramel old ale base. Very low carbonation, slightly dry and oaky in the finish and a pleasant warming alcohol presence. I have not been let down by a BA offering from Peg's yet (hooray for small sample sizes!)

From notes. Poured from a 16 oz. growler into a snifter.

Batch 100 pours a medium caramel brown color with just a tiny wisp of a tan head. The carbonation is visibly on the light side.

The bourbon comes through first but integrated well with the base beer. Figs, molasses, and a nice nutty presence are all noticeable in the nose.

Each sip starts fairly sweet, with a variety of caramel, toffee, molasses, and malt flavors coming through. The flavor is smooth throughout, slowly dries out as the bourbon and oak take effect, and finishes with a mellow vanilla back. The sweetness may become cloying after a number of pours, but for the amount that I had, it was quite elegant.

There is a sweet, syrupy front, which gives the impression of a full, thick body. It lightens up a little bit as the sip progresses. The carbonation is creamy and has a bit more presence that I would have guessed looking at the pour, but it is still on the light side.

Each barrel aged beer I have had from Peg’s has been solid so far; I look forward to trying more of their beers in the future.

Thanks to Rich for opening this. Snifter.

Ruddy dark brown with a fleeting bubbly head. Beautiful toffee brown sugar vanilla nose with an expressive bourbon profile. Light oxidation notes blend with caramel and plum. Smells a lot like Bourbon Barrel Aged Fourth Dementia. Malt is rich in the flavor, reminiscent of brown sugar, dark toffee, and caramel. Big bourbon profile blends with a little vanilla and oak. There's a touch of dark fruit. The beer is upper medium in body with upper low carbonation and noticeable alcohol warming. A very nice Bourbon Barrel Aged Old Ale.

On-tap at Peg's. Poured into a snifter on March 9, 2012. Reviewed from notes.

Appearance - Not stout dark, but dark. Dark brown. No head. Just a ring of bubbles.

Smell - Barrel. Sweet caramel malts. Bourbon, vanilla, and caramel. Not a lot of complexity to it, but nice.

Taste - Vanilla, oak, and caramel. A bit one-note. Bourbon with caramel pretty much sums it up. Not getting any of the complex malt profile I wanted from an old ale.

Mouthfeel - Boozy and sweet. Not really all that heavy, but really sweet.

Overall - Good, but barrel dominated. Perhaps the barrel overshadows what I'm looking for in this beer. Makes me wonder what the base tastes like.

Another big surprise shared by Rhettroactive the other night. Bottle #23 poured from a 16oz swing top into a tasting glass. It poured dark brown in color with some spotty traces of head swirled across the top of the beer.

The aroma has some really nice bourbon and brown sugar to it. I get dark fruits with a little cherry along with some vanilla and oak. The barrel character really stands out in the aroma.

The taste is where the maltiness really starts to come out. I get a good amount of cherry and dark fruit mixing in with the vanilla and oak. A a pretty modest but delicious bourbon presence is there as well. Rich caramel, touch of bitter chocolate and some hop bitterness round out the finish. Really nice flavors to it, and very well integrated.

The mouthfeel is on the heavier side with carbonation being moderate. Overall it was a really great beer. The barrel dominated the aroma a little but the malty, dark fruit flavors that came out in the taste were really great. Everything really comes together very well in it.

From 16oz swingtop growler to Porstmouth glass on 3/24/12
*From notes

-- Many thanks to BastionShaw for 2nd Day Airing this to me --

Growler # 23 of 25

A: Just filthy. In a good way, mind you. Murky crimson-brown in color. A straight pour down the center of my glass yields no head, just a whisp of off-white cream swirling on the top. A creamy, thin collar rims the glass. And as it sits, the edges of the beer literally begin to glow in the light.

S: Classy. It's extremely mellow and laid back, as a beer brewed on the Gulf Coast should be, I guess. The alcohol esters burn a bit at first yet they dissipate, revealing mature bourbon, sweet grains and juicy figs.

T: Like Peg's RareR DOS, the concentration of flavors is unrivaled. Elegant, and addictively drinkable. A rush of raw sugary sweetness hits first, followed by malty earth and a pretty brutish hop bite which only becomes more prevalent as it warms. The finish stars a beautiful and masterfully balanced layer of rich, toasted bourbon. An unmitigated success, and absolutely delicious.

M: Unlike so many other barrel aged Old Ales, this in no way feels thin or oily. Rather it's textured and frothy, smooth and complex.

O: Peg's Batch 100 is yet another epic achievement in American brewing. This transdends the style and reaches for heights beyond the glass. It's art in liquid form, a masterpiece of gargantuan proportions. One of the finest fermented elixirs to have graced my lips.

Another amazing pull from Rhettroactive. Solid.

A: caramel brown, maple syrup. Not much head, opaque.

S: Nice rich bourbon smell, vanilla, caramel, dark sugar. Only slight booziness, very sweet.

T: a sweet bread or biscuit flavor, malty, caramel, vanilla. The booze is hidden very well, great balance. There is a lingering bitterness at the end, almost herbal.

M: surprisingly light, which is refreshing for an old ale. A bit thin for the barrel aging but drinks smoothly.

O: great old ale, great balance. Stays away from the really musty dark fruits of a BB4D. Highly recommended, a rich man's Better Half.

On tap at the source, served in a very bad ass Peg's snifter that I had to purchase for my own enjoyment.

Beer is dark brown / black in the glass, thin off white head of small bubbles, decent retention, moderate to low carbonation, some but not much lacing, looks good.

Nailed it, this beer smell like heaven, malty sweetness nice strong whiskey presence cut by a mild alcohol and a malt backbone of sweetness.

Beer is medium in body, up front you get the malt and that gives way almost immediately to the booze but the beer itself isn't boozy, it is just strong and sweet with this oakiness late on the palate. Great finish, every sip leaves me wanting more. Would I have this again? I'd buy a keg of it if they'd let me.

Very ecstatic to try this one. Peg's is doing some fantastic things.

Pours a dark amber-brown with a thin off-white head that falls down to a collar. A spot or two of lacing.

The nose carries a really nice bit of bourbon, oak, and slight vanilla plus some sweet bread and caramel. Some dark fruits in the background. To me, very reminiscent of Kuhnhenn BB4D, which is high praise. Flavor continues with the bourbon melding beautifully with the base beer. Really sweet and boozy and delicious. Body is incredible. Just so smooth.

Overall, just a fantastic beer that I would love to have again. Not a surprise after how good Rare DOS was.
