First had: serving from a 3 gallon barrel

Rum Barrel Aged Tart Cherry Imperial Stout.

Peg's is either just on the verge of perfecting the imperial stout, or possibly to the point of perfection already. They make these huge, high ABV beers that are incredibly smooth and drinkable with almost no heat at all. Between this, RareR DOS, and Funky DOS...I'm just blown away.

Sun Exploder was served in a snifter, a dark impenetrable black color, maybe a bit of mahogany-ruby tints around the edges, with a thick, dense, mocha head that displayed excellent retention and coated the glass with lacing. The nose was loaded with thick malty goodness, with a distinct blast of rum-soaked cherries, lesser notes of brown sugar, vanilla, and a hint of tobacco. In the taste, a perfect melding of malty and sour, strange as it may seem. This is not a Bell's Cherry Stout. Dark malts, roasty, countered mid-palate with a big cherry tartness that smoothed out to more of a chocolate-cherry cordial, bringing in the vanilla and rum towards the end, with a finishing return of slightly drying roastiness. Thick and smooth, full-bodied, potent, but incredibly drinkable...I knew the ABV was there, but it was not at all hot or boozy.

I was very lucky to have had this when I visited, and I came back the next day with hopes of trying it again, but sadly, it was gone forever. But it was replaced with Dos Cientos, and that was pretty tasty too. Thank you, Peg's.

Reviewed from notes. Had on-tap at Peg's. Served in a Peg's snifter glass.

A: Very dark brown to black, and opaque. Only a small amount of visible carbonation but still leads to a nice tan head that settles to a layer of foam.

S: Roasted malt, oaky wood, some booze. Overall impression is moderate sweetness.

T: Big roasted malt with chocolate and coffee, tannins from wood dry the mouth. Some deep dark cherry flavors eventually but it's subtle. Is only mildly boozy. Hang is like a chocolate covered roasted espresso bean. The tannins in the flavor increase as the beer warms.

M: Heavy body, although I'd consider it average for a stout. A bit sticky mouthfeel, and only moderate alcohol presence.

O: Good but not great. Was probably my least favorite beer I had on this outstanding day of barrel-aged beers at Peg's. It did improve as the glass warmed up some.
