A: The beer is clear golden yellow in color and has a moderate amount of carbonation. It poured with a two finger high off white head that slowly died down but never disappeared.
S: There are moderate aromas of grassy hops, lemon, spices and yeast in the nose.
T: The taste is similar to the smell and also has flavors of herbs and white wine. Grassy hops dominate the taste, which has a mild amount of bitterness.
M: It feels light-bodied, clean and crisp on the palate with a high amount of carbonation and a moderate amount of dryness.
D: This is a very interesting saison but needs to be sipped slowly given its intense flavors and the combination of bitterness and dryness.

Incredibly formidable as an authentic Belgian saison, but brewed in Maryland. Although the seemingly perverse juxtaposition, Stillwater delivers on the promise of authenticity when replicating those flavors that are so classic of traditional European farmhouse ales.

Burnish orange in color, and with a honey-amber hue, the beer casts a diffused glow in front of its yeasty haze. Capped by a creamy blanket of off white foam, the beer retains its foam stance through the last sip and laces with intermittent islands of foam along the way.

Spice and fruit captivate the nose with the very first aromatic draw. Dried oranges/orange peel, soft coriander, white pepper, and earthy aniseed balance perfectly against the fruity esters of peaches, pears, apples, and lemons. A smooth scent of biscuit lies just below the spice and fruit and seems to anchor the scent.

But its those bready-sweet flavors that rise first. A brief coating of honey and thinned caramel greets the taste buds first, but then all is washed away by the dry effervescence that carries with it the dry-fruit taste and peppery balance. There's an extended mid palate where the esters of pear, peach, mango, apricot, and apple mingle with aniseed, coriander, cumin, curry, and mustard seed for a delightful earthen spice that edges toward rye malt. Where hops are nowhere to be mentioned, it's the spice and dryness of the beer that carries its balance; and does so wonderfully.

Medium-light in body, the beer is stubborn in giving up all its dextrinous protein. It's creamy body extends well into the finish despite the eruptive carbonation that wants to usher in a quick and fleeting finish. But instead of conflict, this dialogue in body and bubbles provides another layer of complexity that extends beyond the beer's flavor alone. But alas- the alcohol warmth, peppery spice, light acidity, and fleeting malt textures provide the fruity and spicy-dry closure that all saisons deserve.

Where this beer remains creamy as most authentic versions would exhibit champagne-like dryness- this is where I struggle to find characterize the beer properly. As well as a stronger conversation between the fruit and spice would also elevate the beer to compete with classic DuPont examples, then these small details could propel this beer to the best of Belgium.

On tap at Beachwood BBQ & Brewing in Long Beach, CA.

Pours a clear honey orange with a foamy white head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Foamy streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of grain, yeast, slight spice, and lots of fruity aromas. Taste is the same with some perfume-like flavors. There is also a mild bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good saison with a nice fruity presence.

A very nice beer.
Hazy gold color, thick white head. A bit of delicate lacing.
Lemon aroma mostly. Spicy and peppery. Sweet malt in the background.
A lot more going on in the taste. Lemon first, then pepper and cloves. Bready. An earthiness from the yeast. And, to top it off, some late hops. The flavors all worked well with each other.
A crisp, refreshing beer.
If we ever get some warm weather up here, it would be a perfect beer for a summer day.

Purchased 7/2011, but no bottle date. Poured into a tulip.

A - A slow pour yields four fingers of off-white head on top of a clear slightly orange golden brown with nice carbonation rising. Head has great retention and leaves some lacing, but less than I would have thought.

S - Mix of fruit and earthy funk with apples, pears and a bit if white grape. Also very floral.

T - Taste is a bit heavy on the sweet/floral initially, but fruits and earthy funk eventually come through. Also a subtle tartness. Finish is dry and earthy. Enjoyable.

M - Medium mouthfeel with nice carbonation and a dry earthy finish.

O - For the pricepoint, there are better and cheaper saison, but I enjoyed his and would have it again.

A- Super cloudy pineapple juice color with a medium sized white head that has okay retention.

S- Overripe fruit, tangerine and a touch of honey. Nice mix.

T- Up front citrus and pineapple dominate with clean hoppy bitterness building into the finish. Refreshing.

M- Dry with medium carbonation, this is right where it should be.

O- A very good saison, one I will definitely want to revisit.

12 ounce bottle, "Bottled on 2-19-13" So super fresh...nice

Pours medium golden amber, under a large and staying light khaki head. Bubbles slowly continue to rise. Leaves some dense sheeting and some bands of lacing.

Nose is brightly of lemons, oranges, lime, some pepper, and earthy/yeasty goodness.

Flavorful and hopped up saison, flavors picked up on the nose carry onto the palate. Accent on the lime, pepper, earthyness. Also a layer of fruity, and moderatly drying hops.

Well done - complex, fresh and tasty. Go get some.

Mouthfeel: sweet start with a dry bitter finish, light bodied and high carbonation

Overall: An above average saison that has nice crisp bitterness and good dryness. The smell and look were excellent however. Worth a try but I have had better in the style.

Thanks to Nellie for sharing this bottle. This is my first beer from Stillwater.

The beer pours a yellow color with a white head. The aroma is yeast with some spices and citrus fruit. The flavor is a mix of orange and lemon with some Belgian yeast and assorted spices. A nice drinkable saison. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

12oz bottle at fridge temp poured into a snifter. Bottled on 2/19/13 (1 1/2 months old)

A nice bright golden almost orange color, a bit of haze. A nice big fluffy white head of off the pour fades to a patchy retentive foam, no real lace to speak of.

Belgian yeast phenols, clove, slight hints of Belgian spice, a bit of under ripened fruits, some lemongrass citrus.

Spicey Belgian yeast phenols, clove, under ripened fruit, apple and pear, citrus, mostly lemon. Finishes with a bit more hop bitterness than expected for the style.

Easy drinking, medium to light in body, crisp carbonation, very slight tartness.

A solid Saison, good to style. Makes me look forward to try more from Stillwater.

Enjoyed on tap at Blue Monk in Buffalo. Poured what appeared to be a hazy light orange color. It was a little difficult to see in the light from the bar. It had a nice efferescent white head that lasted a good while. The aroma was grainy, yeasty, slightly citrusy. The flavor was a nice balance of yeast character, grainy malt backbone, enough hop bitterness to balance, some lemon and grapefruit citrus, light spiciness, and a wonderful tart dry finish. Light to medium body with lots of carbonation. Enjoyable throughtout with nice changes as the temperature warmed the beer. Would definitely recommend to have as soon as possible and often as possible.

Poured into pint glass

A: Good orange hazyness. Lots of floaties

S: Wheat, Oranges and maybe coriander

T: Same as smell with a wierd but not at all bad kinda mustiness taste on the end.

M: Somewhat syrupy, again not bad. Decent carbination.

O: A good beer. Glad I got to try it. I'll have to come back to it after I am able to enjoy some more saisons for another review.

12 oz bottle dated 14 June 2013 served in a pilsner glass.

Light golden body, slightly hazy, with an over-sized,creamy, off-white head.

Aroma: dank and herbal, with hints of soft, ripe fruits.

Flavor: usually not my style of beer but this is fairly easy to drink and near minimally funky. Good complexity. Lightly tart and bitter.

Feel: medium-high carbonation; near medium body.

Bottled sometime in mid-summer, by the looks of the code on the bottle (I believe it lists the day number, in this case day 219 of 2014, which makes its birth date–according to Google–August 7). Holds up just fine more than 4 months later!

Appearance: Beautiful clear straw yellow and tightly bubbled bone white head. Head is extremely persistent. Good to see in Stillwater beers. Have had some disappointly carbonated ones before.

Smell: Nose is like a hoppy hefeweizen--lots of yeasty banana, clove, sugar and spicy-herbal notes leap from the glass. One note that really is jumping out at me is mint. Strange but that's what I get.

Taste: Starts mildly sweet and lightly spicy--banana and clove yeast notes very present. Then in the back half, it's like the beer turns old school IPA. It's massively grassy and lightly fruity in its hop profile.

Mouthfeel --What a nice ride on the tongue. Vigorous carbonation makes the fruity/spicy yeast flavors really pop and clear the great dryness from the palate. Outstanding flow from front to back.

In sum, one of the best hoppy saisons I've ever had the pleasure of drinking. The yeast and hops work really well–hop selection here I think was key, as the use of more grassy, clean, and lightly fruity hops play well off the yeast's spiciness. A super beer that is great to see in 4-packs.

Pours a cloudy golden yellow with a thick bubbly white head.

Smells floral and peppery.

Tastes are dry and earthy. Pepper spice and lemon zest followed by a nice breadiness.

Mouthfeel is medium with lots of carbonation. Very drinkable and smooth.

Overall is good. This isn't my first bottle I've had of this beer and I could certainly see buying it again.

A- This beer pours a slightly hazy deep golden yellow body with a creamy beige head that last a good bit. There are tiny strands of carbonation that trail to the surface.

S- The dry buttery diacetyl aroma takes on a sweat sock quality as the beer warms and blends into a pear and apricot aroma in the finish.

T- The pear and apricot estery flavor has a soft diacetyl buttery note and a pleasant soft white cheese rind and saison yeast flavor to it. There are some grapefruit pith notes and a peppery hops bite in the finish that has a butter hint that lingers.

M- The medium-light mouthfeel has a creamy texture in the finish.

O- Lots of pear and buttery flavors that dominate this beer. The fruity esters and saison yeast blend well together but they are not strong enough for the diacetyl that takes over. As the beer warms there is a nice pear and cottage cheese flavor underneath with the yeast and fruit.

12 oz bottle, poured into a goblet

Appearance: Pours a pretty, cloudy, golden color with two full fingers of white-colored head that quickly dissolved into a thin lacing of foam that covered the entire top of the beer.

Aroma: Very aromatic! Lots of bready, toasted malt up front, followed by floral notes of straw, clover, sage, lavender, thyme and coriander. I also get notes of Belgian yeast, pineapple, a touch of grapefruit, honey and ginger.

Taste: Very, very good! Strong flavors of bready toasted malt and the aforementioned flavors of honey, pineapple, grapefruit, ginger, sage, lavender, thyme, coriander and honey. There are also lots of citrusy flavors of orange peel and lemon peel. Finally, and strangely, at the finish there is a touch of an unpleasant metallic flavor, sort of coppery.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied to slightly thin, and pretty effervescent as there is quite a good amount of carbonation to tickle the taste buds. With an ABV of 6.8%, there is no alcohol on the palate.

Overall: This is a really good American version of a Belgian saison. Very nice citrus flavors balanced with a bready, slightly sweet overtone. The only thing keeping this beer from being great or even outstanding is that slight metallic taste in the finish.

Thanks to finewinemike for the opportunity to taste this Saison. Its one of my favorite styles, and I'm always willing to try new versions.

Poured into my dfh snifter- pours a dark golden color, with some frothy foam, but not too much- it quickly recedes and leaves little cover on the beer. Appearance is overall average. Smell- lemon, wheat, the wheat is overpowering and a little off putting. Taste- sweet, bready, but something that I love about Saisons is really missing here. I love the cracked pepper and coriander flavors, I dont see any of that here. I tried the Stillwater Cellar Door Saison a few days ago, and find it much superior to this one.

I brought back a twelve-ounce bottle of this beer from a recent trip to Colorado.

The beer pours a golden color with a well-carbonated head. The head is thin and bubbly, somewhat like a champagne, and leaves a persistent lacing on the sides of the pint glass from which I drank.

On the nose, the first thing that I notice is the heavy citrus notes, much like grapefruit and/or grapefruit rind. It's a mix of sweet and bitter, which is then followed by yeastiness and sweet malt.

The flavor is very much consistent with the smell, as the grapefruit and other citrus notes impart a mellow, yet noticeable and tasty, taste that complements the beers yeast notes well.

The beer is very easy-sipping and even the bitterness from the grapefruit and citrus notes doesn't make this any less drinkable.

Overall, a great saison and one of the more memorable I've had given its crispness and the pronounced citrus aroma and flavor.

750ml bottle. Another sexy, slick label (once you look past the front and center weird-ass vulture-snake) from this gypsy brewer, at least for this amateur cartophile.

This beer pours a hazy dark golden yellow hue, with three flabby fingers of puffy, climbing, thinly foamy off-white head, which leaves a few sudsy swaths of arc-weld lace around the glass as it quite slowly ebbs away.

It smells of spicy, zingy, meaty citrus - lemon, lemongrass, lime rind, coriander, a touch of cumin - grainy pale malt, a lightly musty yeastiness, and a further earthy, floral hoppiness. The taste is lightly honeyed, somewhat biscuity pale malt, overripe lemon and crisp, fresh apple, white pepper, faint metallic cilantro, subtle dry yeast, a mixed-bag of tropical fruit esters, and some mild savoury spices, blended insofar as I'm just happy to share in the experience. No evidence of the elevated alcohol whatsoever.

The carbonation is gently effervescent, and does well to keep it up, the body a pleasantly understated medium weight, and generally rather smooth, in a workaday sense. It finishes barely off-dry, the malt having to pull out all the stops in the face of an organized drying effort, courtesy of the yeast, fruit, and hops (and possibly the otherwise AWOL alcohol).

Saisons kind of come, and kind of go in my world, i.e., I don't really get a lot out of them, and don't find many embracing. That damning caveat out of the way, I have to say that I really like this one - the crazy amount of input flavours are deftly integrated - subdued, even, into a straight-ahead drinkable affair, one bereft of any extreme elements, which may be the one aspect of this style that I do wholly endorse, when suitably followed through with as it is here.

Bright glowing yellow, big white head, spotty sparse lace. Aroma is great. Super refreshing clean and stinky citrus, earthy and herbal, doughy chewy malts, spicy and soft, juicy dank fruit and miscellaneous flowers. Taste is all of the above plus sugary through the finish. Briskly carbonated. I like this saison more than many I've had. Really well done. I could proceed to enjoy a lot of these.

Bomber from some expensive NY place at $14. A farmhouse ale without the farm, nothing funky at all in the aroma. A tasty ale, overcarbonated but still fairly tasty and drinkable. Some orange citrus, some cola, all within some nondescript saison ingredients. Dark coloured with small white head.

Poured from a 750mL bottle (no cork by the way) into my Troubadour tulip.

Mildly cloudy somewhat dark amber liquid topped by a voluminous pearling rocky head of beige. Decent retention, thin amoebic lacing and light glossy legs.

Floral, grassy aromatics with a punch of banana backlit with soft phenolics from the yeast. A faint grainy element suggests a feedyard more than a farmyard, but is welcome none the less.

Very unusual flavor - the hops are quite forward distinguishing this as an American take on the style - the vinuous goose-berry-like flavor suggests Nelson was among the varieties utilized for bittering. This lends a dry mineral-laden fruitiness which works well with the underlying earthy flavors from the yeast. Softer malt flavors and faint white pepper notes come out in the finish. Some tart flavors, suggesting white wine, green apples, and lemon pith dance around the palate as well. Truly unique.

Medium-light bodied, slightly oily perhaps, with spot-on ABV.

Zesty and hoppy, with a singular flavor profile, the dryness and bitter fruity notes really distinguish this ale from its peers...

A: a hazy peachy orange body with a white head that fizzes to only a quarter of an inch left. Thin lace left.
S: bready, malty, musky, pear and spicy pepper.
T: spicy black pepper, a hint of sweetness, fruits, bready malt, and finishing with more fruit like melons?
M: drying yet leaving the tongue watering and yearning for more.
O: not bad at all and definitely a beer I want to revisit again when it's fresh. This bottle was at least 5 months old.

Appearance:
Murky, dirty yellow body hosts plenty of carbonation and a thin, white head that has mediocre retention and leaves no lacing. The rush of bubbles is actually audible.

Aroma:
Nice and spiced. It's nothing out of character for the style, but it is pleasant and your nose will thank you for this one. Fresh ground pepper and coriander, lemon zest, pungent Belgian yeast, and a hint of leather. Overall it's very sweet and earthy.

Taste:
Quite sweet and pleasantly funky. All attributes noted in the aroma are present in taste. Only the slightest tinge of bitterness immediately upon sipping.

Mouthfeel:
Smooth and sweet medium(ish) bodied brew. Gobs of carbonation. Clean and dry finish.

Overall:
Fantastic example of one of my personal favorite styles. This will make a great grillin' companion. Easy to drink and refreshing, you definitely want to add this to your shopping list.
