A: The beer is clear golden yellow in color and has a moderate amount of carbonation. It poured with a two finger high off white head that slowly died down but never disappeared.
S: There are moderate aromas of grassy hops, lemon, spices and yeast in the nose.
T: The taste is similar to the smell and also has flavors of herbs and white wine. Grassy hops dominate the taste, which has a mild amount of bitterness.
M: It feels light-bodied, clean and crisp on the palate with a high amount of carbonation and a moderate amount of dryness.
D: This is a very interesting saison but needs to be sipped slowly given its intense flavors and the combination of bitterness and dryness. (678 characters)

Among the other Stillwater beers, I was less of a fan of their stateside saison. It's unique and interesting, but not my ideal. From the pour you get a sense of what's coming. The head develops rapidly, to an absurd volume. Be very careful on your pour.

So, with that kind of head, you know to expect carbonation - and good lord is it carbonated. It's kind of out of control - which makes it memorable - but that wheaty, fresh taste might suffer. I recommend this to try once, but not a huge fan overall. (505 characters)

Picked this up at GBX.

A - Poured from a bottle into a tulip glass. Pours hazy, brilliant orange with golden highlights. A big fluffy white head propagates the top of the brew.

S - Slightly funky earthy yeast. The lemon-grapefruit citrus aroma of hops. Pepper, maybe cloves.

T - Spicy frontend made up mostly of white pepper, cloves, other spices, some sweetness devolving into a funky, hoppy aftertaste.

M - Highly carbonated, lighter bodied. (448 characters)

Stateside Saison is a dark and toasty golden and has a semi-obscured complexion; it appears much denser than the brighter, sunnier examples I tend to think of as prototypical for the style. But it's certainly recognizable as a saison and is an attractive beer nonetheless. Likewise, although the Belgians take head propagation more seriously, the level of foamy white suds present here is still more than acceptable.

Like all good and proper saisons, this beer has a lot to say about yeast: an undercurrent of earthy funk scampers throughout the aroma. Over top of it, however, is a distinguishably 'new world' hoppiness that is nonchalantly bitter and more than helpful at creating additional depth to the (predictable) elements of fruits, herbs and spices.

The taste, apparently, is where most of the spiciness has come to settle. Trying to capture the essence of this maladjusted 'spiciness' is like guessing lottery numbers - who knows? Cloves, white pepper, dried oregano, grains of paradise? The one thing I do know for certain is that no actual spices were even used. That's just the magic of yeast.

In order for its flavour to really spring to life, Stateside Saison needed some time to warm. It took me the better part of a half hour to realize just how animatedly zesty and precocious a beer this is. Its crispy, toasty, biscuity pale malts are a compliment of the highest order for all this spicy yeast. It has an interplay of tastes and textures that comes only from top quality ingredients, a clever recipe and an imaginative, adept brewer.

Stillwater is an ironic name for a brewery that is creating so many ripples in the craft-beer pond. The mind behind this outfit is clearly a visionary and, fortunately, one with the proper appreciation and understanding of classic styles to possess the necessary tact when putting his own personal spin on them. Stateside Saison is exactly what it says it is: an homage to old world tradition and a celebration of new world innovation. (2,032 characters)

I've not been absolutely thrilled with the other Stillwater beers I've had, but here's to giving another a try!

Poured into a tulip - has the look of a good saison, lots of foam, orangey-gold. Aroma filled the room as I popped the cap. A little mustiness, but mostly orange, lemon and a little grapefruit, from the American and New Zealand hops, I guess. I like. If this is going to be a nice hoppy saison, it bodes well for my liking it.

It tastes pretty much as it smells. Mostly dry and peppery, with some good hints of citrus. Not terribly complicated, but it's still hitting all the right marks for me, for a cleaner non-buggy saison. I like those to have a bit of an assertive hop profile (relative to style), and this one has it.

Good spiky mouthfeel. Here's my Stillwater winner, so far. (800 characters)

Poured from the cask into a pint glass. Resembling a strange orange/yellow combonation with a typical opaque body of about 50% see through quality. There's a resemblance of MUD in the bottom of the glass, but a very nice tight white cream head to go with this.

Bouquet is not what to expect from a saison no doubt due to cask quality. Simple yeast, but a medium to mild floral quality also. I actually like this but it does not seem of a typical saison quality.

Taste though is quite unique and rated high on personal preference. A very nice mild quinine factor at first with some really tight fizz, giving way to American stylen IPA hop bitters on the finish with a medium bitters feel. Missing fruit and floral notes in taste. Of course has that wonderful cask butter sensation which gives me a great mouthfeel.

Drinkability gets to be solid but mostly cause this saison out of the cask comes as a cross between and American IPA and a weak Belgian saison minus the things about saisons I don't care for. This beer out of the cask is NOT a typical saison at all so keep that in mind if you are a fan of that style. (1,118 characters)

My two year anniversary on BA. I am so close to 400 reviews, I'm going to hold out to review a big one, but for now, this seems fitting. One of my favorite styles from a new never tried brewery. Cheers!

Appearance - Pours into my Bell's Tulip with a hazy golden color and three inches of bellowing head that remind me of a Jolly Pumpkin brew. The head dissipates at a surprisingly quick pace, leaving slight lacing on the sides of the glass.

Smell - The aroma is as one would expect from a great saison. Thankfully not too sweet - floral qualities, spicy hops, a hint of yeast and banana. Smells dry...inviting.

Taste - Similar to the nose, however, there is a definite leather, barnyard funk present in the flavor that is not so prevalent in the aroma. Not hugely noticeable (i.e. read not nearly as funky/sour as a JP saison) but still a nice touch. However, the sweetness is a bit more overpowering than initially thought. I wish the tartness from this was a bit stronger to overpower the sweetness. I suppose I am biased seeing as I was introduced to Saisons/Farmhouse Ales through JP, which is not typical for the style.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, finishes dry, great for the style.

Drinkability - A quaffable saison for sure, however, as previously mentioned, this is just a hint too sweet and for the price, I would pick up a JP saison instead. I will say there is no alcohol in the flavor, though I do get a hint of warming in the throat from each sip. If a JP saison was not available, I do think I would pick this second from the others I have tried. (1,588 characters)

Pours a clouded darker orange with some golden tones. An off white head fades slowly into well retained lacing and thick film.

Some fruit and citrus in the nose with lighter spice and faint yeasty funk.

Somewhat sweeter fruit up front with blood orange and apricot. Assorted spices mix in with sone light funk. A bit more of sweetness rides through towards the end. Finishes dry and a little spicy with a barely any hint of alcohol.

Lighter medium body, higher carbonation, a little dry. Drinks well, light alcohol, and a decent balance between funk and spice. Overall not super impressive but a solid saison. (646 characters)

Pours a sunshine yellow with a faint red hue. The thick white head is a massive 3 fingers tall and sticks around forever causing very nice lacing.

The bright smell has notes of banana, lemon, apple, and musty yeast.

I would say that the taste features a lot of what I wrote about the smell with the addition of clove. I would say that lemon and apple are the most dominant flavors.

The feel is medium with a nice drying. The interesting thing is how long the grassy sour aftertaste lasts.

This is a solid Saison with a good balance of all reviewing categories. Very drinkable and tasty. (619 characters)

Poured from 750mL brown bottle into a Duvel tulip. No freshness date. Purchased at Wine Warehouse (Charlottesville, VA) for $10.99.

A: Honey-amber hue with thick 2-3 finger nearly white, frothy head with good retention and a scaffolding of lace.

S: Pale maltiness with strong yeast component provide a sweet breadiness but the medicinal, band-aid notes are very strong and mute the malt and herbal hops components.

T: The first half of this bottle was consumed at 50ish degrees, and the latex band-aid qualities were too prominent with puckering dryness. The pale maltiness has a degree of sweetness that could not keep up with the yeasty character. The herbal hops were pretty much lost. With about an hour of warming, the second half of the bottle was much more enjoyable and drinkable with the sweet pale malt complexity coming through and some nice touches of the herbal, lemony, earthy hops character too. The latex, medicinal character was blunted but still supplied the dryness expected for the style.

M: More than expected body with an extremely dry feel overall and very active carbonation to give nice crisp finish.

D: Compared to the Les Bons Voeux of a couple of weeks ago, this brew is simply very good, but it still has a lot to suggest it including components of malty sweetness, citrus-herbal hoppiness, and yeasty farmhouse funk that still packs a good punch of saisony goodness. (1,401 characters)

Many thanks to the several traders who have sent me bottles of this. I know this has to be at least the 4th bottle I have procured through a trade.

Poured a capped and foiled 750ml into my Dogfish Head globe glass. This beer pours a hazy golden honey with yeast particulates floating around in the glass. The head retention is spectacular. A massive 4 finger head erupted from the bottle and 2 inches of creamy white head are always perched on top of the liquid. The aroma is musty funky up front, almost like a closet full of clothes that hasn't seen daylight in a year. Behind the funk is just a hint of floral and herbal hops. Just a little bit of damp grass. Also at the tail end of the aroma is under ripe tree fruits. Hard pears and apples. The flavor is funky. Damp, musty earth intermingled with hard pears and dried hay. Tasty stuff but the depth of the flavor profile of a great saison just isn't there. Regardless, its tasty stuff. The mouthfeel is dry, but not cat tongue dry. I've had the pleasure of drinking this beer on several occasions. I've even brought it to 2 or 3 tastings and its a great saison. I wish Stillwater distributed to Missouri. (1,162 characters)

750 ml bottle. Served in a tulip glass, the beer pours a cloudy golden/orange color with a couple inch frothy off-white head. Head retention and lacing are both very good. Aroma is lemon peel, bready/grainy malt, peppery spice, and a bit of clove and grassy hops. I pick up a strong herbal flavor in this brew, along with some lemon peel, peppery spice, grain/bready malt, bananas, and some grassy hops. Very tasty brew. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's dry and well carbonated. The soft carbonation makes this easy to drink, and quite refreshing. I think this is a good overall brew, I'd definitely buy this again. (613 characters)

From Notes.
Look: Poured into a Duvel Tulip. Color is a hazy peach with a large head. Large gobs of lasting lace are left behind.
Smell: Bread, lemon rind and pepper. There is a bit of funk in the background.
Taste: Wow, pale malts and spice are the first taste that comes forward. There is some horse-blanket funk and a plantain-like, dry finish. The mouth is a little thin, but it doesn't detract from the beer too much.
Drink: Grab one, very nice saison. (457 characters)

A-poured a gorgeous murky orange with a frothy foamy head and lively carbonation into my oversized snifter. looks like a day out in the fields. golden like a summer's day.

S-explodes with candied sweetness. complex smell bursting with candied hops.

T-bittery hop profile, but nicely balanced. rich in flavor and feel. sweeter saison taste - clove, banana, bubblegum, subtle spicing.

M-creamy and smooth. leaves a tingle and then a bittery dry after feel. definitely heavier than most other saisons, but nicer for the transition out of summer into fall.

D-this really is a fantastic beer. recently at a beer event in nyc i sampled some stillwater for the first time and was blown away. in a day of drinking dozens of different beers, the stillwater brew cut through as a clear highlight. stateside saison is a winner and a beer i will be looking for again and again. (869 characters)

Poured into a tulip.

4.0 A: Lightly hazed dark orange color. Three fingers of off-white creamy/frothy hybrid head. Great retention and moderate amounts of spotty lacing.

3.5 S: Overall pretty dry with a lemony grassiness. Musty basement and cracker malts. As it warms, there a touch of wild apple. Grassy hops, but hops are weak. Not very complex, but not bad.

4.0 T: The taste is a lot more intense than what the nose would suggest. Big hit of cracker, biscuit, and to a lesser extent bready malts. Lots a herbal spiciness in the form of rosemary, parsley, lemongrass and a beavy flowers. Again, this is very dry with wild apple like funkiness. Musky basement funkiness as well. Borderline 4.5.

3.5 M: Lighter medium to medium body. Plenty of carbonation that isn't quite spritzy and, indeed, a bit too much. Could be creamier as well.

3.5 D: Good beer, but drinkability suffers from the vegetal component. While the herbal flavor is good for a few ounces, it gets old before the second glass. Still, the malts contribute tasty and aggressive flavors. Worth a try. (1,071 characters)

On tap in Buffalo. A golden pour with a long-lived white head and good lace. Clean grain nose with hints of fruit and spice. Dry flavour with grain, mineral, some floral notes and a light hint of funk. Nothing overly exciting, but a solid rendition. Body, as mentioned, is dry with a pleasing billowy carbonation.

A good saison, but I'm perplexed by its spot on the best in style list - there are far better ones out there. (424 characters)

burnt gold with a big white head that holds and leaves lots of lace. nose is traditional saison with hints of American-style hops popping up. flowers, fruit, spice (pepper), euro malty sweetness and a bit of country barn all ring out in balance. very impressive. medium body with lively carbonation makes for a nice, prickly, cleansing mouthfeel that goes down way too easy. one of my favorite saisons to date and definitely my favorite American made saison. avant guarde traditional? yum. finally, a breath of fresh air!! (522 characters)

This is a really drinkable saison and one of the best I've tried. Really dry on the finish with hints of spice coming through. Dryer than any other saison I've tried. Good head retention and color.

A bit of floral hoppiness detected and tartness on the finish. If this was offered in 12oz bottles it'd be an everyday saison for me. 750ml only as far as I know. (361 characters)

Bottle: Poured a bright light orangey color ale with a large pure white foamy head with good retention and great lacing. Aroma consists of fruity ester with dry floral notes form the hops with some light funky yeast notes also discernable. Taste is also a nice mix between some funky notes with floral hops and dry aftertaste. I thought the malt bill was great if maybe a tad too sweet for my own taste. Body was full for style with great carbonation and no signs of alcohol. Very well brewed and something I would seek again fro sure. (535 characters)

Pours cloudy orange in color with a creamy 1 finger off white head that faded quickly and left great lacing; the lacing stuck to the glass and slid down very slowly.

Smells of funky yeast, sweet malt, coriander, pepper, light spices, cinnamon, allspice and citrus hops; it was quite a funky aroma that was almost too much.

Tastes like it smells, with funky yeast, sweet malt, coriander, pepper, light spices, cinnamon, allspice, citrus hops, sour fruit like grapefruit and a slight alcohol twang; a very funky beer overall.

Mouthfeel is crisp, light and airy, with very light carbonation, a light body and funky dry aftertaste.

A very tasty beer, but way too funky to be a session beer. A bold beer for those with an adventurous palate, but just not my cup of tea. I'm glad that I tried this, but I won't seek it out again. (831 characters)

Big huge pour with a ton of bubbles and a massive frothy head. Big sweet yeasty notes on the nose, a ton of spice and banana. Taste was a typical saison, very earthy, but with a ton of carbonation that carries through to the finish. Very drinkable once it settles, as well as complex, picking up some funkiness on the end. Very good, glad i grabbed this from the bottom of the fridge. (384 characters)

Thanks to Johnmichaelsen for sending this one to me. Poured into 16oz goblet. Poured a nice oranget-yellow color with a very tall, fluffy, white head that had very long lasting retention but surprisingly low lacing.

The aroma was a nice example of the expected grain, yeast and spice notes that are the reasons I like this style so much. The taste was very similar and typical, just better focused than some examples I've tried. I drank the first part of this bottle while my steak was cooking and had the rest with the meal and the beer went well with everything, including the triple berry pie for desert.

The body was just a little livelier than average. Drinkability was very good, I would certainly have this again. Overall, a slightly better than average example of the style, worth trying if you see it and is probably worth asking for in a trade. (856 characters)

On-tap at Prime 16 into a Weyerbacher tulip.

A: Hazy orange body with a finger of frothy white foam. Average retention and light lacing. Good looking beer.

S: Pretty much pure tart, fruity yeast esters - lemon, apple, pear; some light spice as well. A little bit of cheesy funk appears later on. Pretty solid, but a little harsh; some of the funk borders on being vomitous, but in an ok way.

T: Starts out quite tart (pleasantly so), with great fruitiness. It transitions quickly, though, into a harsh, cheesy, bitter funk. Disappointing.

M: Smooth medium body with a pleasant dose of moderately smooth carbonation. Great.

D: The finish is clean enough to make this easy to drink. The flavor doesn't make me want another one, though.

Notes: I'm sorry I missed out on trying the Cellar Door when it was on tap earlier in the week. As excited as I always am by a new take on a great Belgian style, I don't think I'll be seeking out Stateside again. It's nowhere near as good as, say, Hennepin or Helios, and significantly more expensive.

Pours murky gold with two finger head, above average sized bubbles, some lacing. Smells like some basement, bit of lemon, faint grassy aroma and a hint of spice and banana. Tastes like an over yeasty saison. Too much spice and banana, but some good notes, grassyness and a faint flavor of basement. Too many malt flavors for me, needs to be more simple. Nice effervecent mouthfeel. However a little tough to drink and slightly cloying. Overall I think this beer tastes a bit too much like a golden ale, too many esters. (519 characters)

Picked up a bomber of this in DC. Poured out into a pint.
Slightly hazy copper with orange/red tints. Huge billowey white head that gradually dies down. Lots of bubbles.
Nose is farmy with berry notes. Fruity and sugary. Euro hops typo.
Taste is wet hops, wild, yeasty. Ethanol, slightly chemicaley. Vague "green" flavors.
Nice mouthfeel and drinkability. (356 characters)
