I admit to Saison as being one of my favorite styles. I've been drinking it since DuPont and Silly were the about the only available versions to find here in the Chicago area. I bought this bottle on the recommendation of the beer guys in at Binny's South Loop.

So

This stuff is GOOD!

The guys told me they held it in high regard. Since I knew that this was not the last time we'd be discussing beer...I took their advice. It poured with a wheaty head that clung to the sides of the burgundy glass that I chose for the glass of the evening. The nose had a soapy tartness that was appealing and off-putting at the same time. Good perfume usually does the same thing.

Then I tasted it...and I've had quite a few versions of this style...and my eyes opened. This flavor was big! It's not too sweet...even though sweetness is part of the initial experience. It kicked in four flavors at once. I haven't had that many beers that have done that. (Hair of the Dog). The body of the beer was big...I think it's necessary to have a big body to deliver all four flavors at once ...Botero...
It coated my tongue and I have the pleasure of still drinking some now.

Based upon this beer I'll buy and try all the other Stillwaters on the shelf. Still waters do run deep. Gypsy brewing seems to be the domaine of the obsessed...thank you.

Quite a beautiful beer in the big New Belgium snifter. Pours a hazy golden amber with great frothy legs. Not a lot of fragrance but some nose of malt and apples. Great mouthfeel with a creamy carbonation and rich body.

Some sweetness is quite noticeable at first sip. The yeasty flavors add to the fun, along with some bitterness of the Belgian funky sort. Hops are not really apparent, but there is a nice edge to the maltiness. Another nice feature is the big fruity tanginess-- not too dry, and not too acidic. A touch of orange rind. A great beer that make the Saison such an interesting style.

poured into a tulip from a 750ml bottle. Pours a very light gold color that is clear as well. There is a very frothy and big head

very citrus based aromas of papaya, navel oranges, spices and lemons.

medium bodied with very good flavors of lemons, floral and oranges. There is maybe a bit too much carbonation on this but the feel is very good

A very good saison. Very citrus based as opposed to funky. Smooth with a good feel, this is very enjoyable

Purchased 7/2011, but no bottle date. Poured into a tulip.

A - A slow pour yields four fingers of off-white head on top of a clear slightly orange golden brown with nice carbonation rising. Head has great retention and leaves some lacing, but less than I would have thought.

S - Mix of fruit and earthy funk with apples, pears and a bit if white grape. Also very floral.

T - Taste is a bit heavy on the sweet/floral initially, but fruits and earthy funk eventually come through. Also a subtle tartness. Finish is dry and earthy. Enjoyable.

M - Medium mouthfeel with nice carbonation and a dry earthy finish.

O - For the pricepoint, there are better and cheaper saison, but I enjoyed his and would have it again.

Poured from a 750ml beautiful bottle into an Allagash Cervoise Footed Glass. Pours a cloudy ochre with a huge white billowy head. Beautiful beer!!

The nose has excellent earthiness to it. A real funky, old earth smell is the best way I can describe it. There is also a large presence of lemon zest.

The taste is similar to the nose with the funkiness and a larger presence of the lemon zest. Slight tart notes play along well with the lemony funkiness of the brew.

The mouth feel compliments the beer very well. While the carbonation is definitely there it does not overwhelm the beer in the least. Really enjoyable.

This beer is not only an excellent example of the style but just an all-around excellent beer. Stillwater is knocking it out of the park regularly. So happy I can purchase their beer.

A - Pours a medium golden orange color with a massive and billowing white mountain of foam, carbonation is sprightly and substantial...looks absolutely awesom in the tulip glass!

S - Earthy, dry musty, hay, light peppery phenols, and some sour funk.

T - Apples, white grapes, hay, slightly earthy, and a slightly sour and twangy funk at the end of the sip. The malt is Belgian-like light and crackery with the heavy carbonation adding a crisp ending on the tongue before subsiding to a smooth feel and finish.

M - Awesome amount of prickly carbonation and perfect for the style, light medium body, and a mild alcohol effervesence.

O - I really enjoyed this beer and will buy another bottle soon. This has been sitting in my beer fridge for a few months and no telling how long it was on the shelf prior to that. Regardless, the beer has held up quite well. Worth a try if you're a fan of Saisons.
