Notes/Commercial Description:
For the first edition of the Stillwater Import Series I traveled to the village of Beerzel, located in the Antwerp province of Belgium. Here I teamed up with brewmaster Jef Goetelen to craft an authentic Belgian version of my liquid interpretation of the Spring season. A recipe originally contrived a few years prior as a collaboration brew with my good friend Paul Kretzer. The base is German barley & wheat, with a touch of Belgian aromatic; accented with grassy hops and an array of spring botanicals (heather, chamomile, lavender, & dandelion). Like a fresh meadow in spring.

Thanks to XicanoBeerRun for sharing this one.

This pours a cloudy straw colored. There’s a light aroma of tropical fruit. Tastes reminiscent of passionfruit and pineapple, a bit of mango and an earthiness. Very fizzy, effervescent, with a dry finish and a touch of white tea. Earthy, funky, spicy, zesty. It’s an intriguing brew with more in store than your typical saison.

Stillwater Of Love & Regret is a saison with herbal ingredients added. I'm always up for an experimental saison. Let's dig in.

Appearance (4/5): Yellow, straw like and hazy; bright white head with a two finger head that dissipates into a small ring.

Smell (4/5): A very herbal and floral nose that does well not to get perfumy. Lavender, lemon, hay and grass really push to the fore. The scent edges into earthy territory, actually.

Taste (4.25/5): Very herbaceous in flavor following the nose. Lavender and lemon with a white grape, white wine like tart dryness in the finish. Dandelion adds some flower petal soft bitterness. Fruity yeast also contributes a lot to the flavor. A nicely complex saison, for sure.

Mouthfeel (3.75/5): medium low carbonation. Carbonation could be higher for the style (which is something I've felt when tasting other Stillwater beers, too, unfortunately). Highly dry in the finish, making this quite a refreshing, if odd, beverage.

Overall (4/5): I think Stillwater's Of Love and Regret is a very interesting, tasty beer that–while it certainly has some flaws–was a pleasure to try. It gets the earthiness quotient right and successfully gets the flower/herbal flavors to works without being too sweet or perfumey. A successful go at an herbed/spiced saison.

12 oz. bottle poured into a Burley Oak snifter (4/16/14)

A: Deep straw color.

S: Smells good. Very herbal and floral. Smells like spring.

T: Extremely herbal with a lot of farmhouse flavors in there. This might be the most herbal beer that I've had, which is more pronounced due to the inherent flavors that come with it being a saison.

M: Slight carbonation and just a bit rough.

O: Interesting for sure and quite the flavorful saison.
