Notes/Commercial Description:
For the first edition of the Stillwater Import Series I traveled to the village of Beerzel, located in the Antwerp province of Belgium. Here I teamed up with brewmaster Jef Goetelen to craft an authentic Belgian version of my liquid interpretation of the Spring season. A recipe originally contrived a few years prior as a collaboration brew with my good friend Paul Kretzer. The base is German barley & wheat, with a touch of Belgian aromatic; accented with grassy hops and an array of spring botanicals (heather, chamomile, lavender, & dandelion). Like a fresh meadow in spring.

A: The beer is hazy yellowish orange in color and has a high amount of visible carbonation; some yeast particles are floating in suspension. It poured with a finger high white head that quickly died down yet consistently left a thin layer of bubbles covering the surface.
S: There are moderate to strong aromas of herbs in the nose—heather and lavender stand out in particular.
T: Like the smell, the taste is dominated by flavors of herbs, much like you would expect from that of a gruit, although the finish has a slight amount of bitterness and spiciness.
M: It feels light-bodied on the palate with a moderate to high amount of carbonation. There are some notes of dryness in the finish.
O: This is definitely a unique saison and is a beer that I would want to try again.

Bottle poured from the bottle into a tulip. As a preface and going from Dyan's comment--I quite thoroughly enjoyed Saison du BUFF.

Pours a light rusty copper with a four finger white head. No real lacing as it goes down. Nose brings forth strong, fresh herbs; seems to be rosemary and sage. Slightly sweet and maybe a bit of pine. Taste brings the components together along with a bit of earth. Quite nice overall. Feel is overly light and undercarbonated. Drinks fairly well, though some of the spicing gets to be a bit much.

Appearance: Hazy yellow orange, thin white cap and OK lacing.

Aroma: Medium+ pungent herbs. Lavender and chamomile up front. There are also some aromas reminiscent of lemon/hibiscus. not sure if that's the heather/dandelion or the hops/yeast. I don't know exactly what that stuff smells like. Whatever it is I like it. Also got some bready grain character.

Flavor: Pretty intense character of fruit, herbs and spice. Can't tell where the adjuncts, yeast, and hops begin and end. Sign of a world class saison IMO. Little to no hop bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Light bodied and fairly dry, but a bit of lingering sweetness keeping me from bumping it to a 4.5.

Overall: Another one knocked out of the park from Stillwater.

Tasted 18 October 2014.

Pours a medium golden yellow, mostly clear. Nice color and brightness, but not much head and almost no lacing (unusual for a Stillwater saison).

Smell is up and down. It's potent, very fruity and flowery, full of esters. But it's relatively simple.

Taste is a lot like the smell. It's got an extra touch of spice, but it's more one-dimensional than the smell, a single sweet floral-fruity peak that doesn't really wow me.

Feel is okay. Definitely on the flat side, and some more buzz would help the flavors dance.

A decent saison, that I actually really liked on first sip. In breaking it down, I find myself talking myself out of liking it, but that's about the components vs. the whole. The flavors that are present are nice, though they're simple. Needs more complexity, or for those up-front characteristics to be better.
