For the first edition of the Stillwater Import Series I traveled to the village of Beerzel, located in the Antwerp province of Belgium. Here I teamed up with brewmaster Jef Goetelen to craft an authentic Belgian version of my liquid interpretation of the Spring season. A recipe originally contrived a few years prior as a collaboration brew with my good friend Paul Kretzer. The base is German barley & wheat, with a touch of Belgian aromatic; accented with grassy hops and an array of spring botanicals (heather, chamomile, lavender, & dandelion). Like a fresh meadow in spring.

Appearance: Hazy yellow orange, thin white cap and OK lacing.

Aroma: Medium+ pungent herbs. Lavender and chamomile up front. There are also some aromas reminiscent of lemon/hibiscus. not sure if that's the heather/dandelion or the hops/yeast. I don't know exactly what that stuff smells like. Whatever it is I like it. Also got some bready grain character.

Flavor: Pretty intense character of fruit, herbs and spice. Can't tell where the adjuncts, yeast, and hops begin and end. Sign of a world class saison IMO. Little to no hop bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Light bodied and fairly dry, but a bit of lingering sweetness keeping me from bumping it to a 4.5.

Overall: Another one knocked out of the park from Stillwater.

Tasted 18 October 2014.

Pours a medium golden yellow, mostly clear. Nice color and brightness, but not much head and almost no lacing (unusual for a Stillwater saison).

Smell is up and down. It's potent, very fruity and flowery, full of esters. But it's relatively simple.

Taste is a lot like the smell. It's got an extra touch of spice, but it's more one-dimensional than the smell, a single sweet floral-fruity peak that doesn't really wow me.

Feel is okay. Definitely on the flat side, and some more buzz would help the flavors dance.

A decent saison, that I actually really liked on first sip. In breaking it down, I find myself talking myself out of liking it, but that's about the components vs. the whole. The flavors that are present are nice, though they're simple. Needs more complexity, or for those up-front characteristics to be better.
