Notes/Commercial Description:
Human history is filled with myths and legends that shape and define our culture. Rituals, celebrations, gatherings.. whatever. One thing that’s for sure, is we enjoy a proper shindig. So let’s get the stories flowing and share a little ’Folklore’. A bracingly deep ale, built dark and rich with an elegantly lean body, accompanied by heady aromas of Belgian yeast, earthy hops and gently kissed by a wisp of smoke.

This beer was formerly known as 25 to One.

750 ml bottle, bought at Bottle Revolution.

Appearance: Pours a very dark brown with a thick medium brown head. Good head retention, but just spots of lacing.

Smell: Belgian yeasty with some spiciness. Theres a bit of dark fruit, but also an unexpected roasty smell and a bit of cocoa powder.

Taste: This beer has a very nice balance of Belgian yeast flavors and roast. These beers can be a mess, but this is nice.

Mouthfeel: Soft, creamy carbonation, but with a medium-light body and a dry finish.

Overall: So, this is not a BSDA at all, but a "Belgian stout". As I said, its nicely balanced and the flavors integrate well. Its pretty damn good.

Appearance:
Pitch black body allows no light penetration. Generous mahogany head has decent short-term retention, but eventually dwindles to nada. Plenty of carbonation and decent legs can be seen.

Aroma:
Very malty and moderately sweet (molasses) to the nose. Cocoa nibs laced with coffee, a hint of smoked peat, and licorice. Trace cola and ginger root.

Taste:
Everything your nose picks up will carry over in the taste with the addition of dark fruit right up front. sweet throughout with a bit of bite from the alcohol on the tail end.

Mouthfeel:
Catch-you-off-guard light body and moderately carbonated. Easy to drink with a clean, sweet finish.

Overall:
Another fantastic beer from Stillwater and a bit of a head-scratcher. The best way I can describe this beer is it's a Russian Imperial Meets a Black Lager or Schwarzbier. Easy to drink and packed with complexity and flavor, it's definitely worth your time (and money).

$ 3.49/12 oz bottle at Oppermann’s Cork ‘N’ Ale
Bottled 01/02/14 at 50 degrees into standard pint
Aroma of roasted malt
Head large (> 7 cm), light brown, creamy/fizzy, rapidly diminishing to 9 mm layer
Lacing - none
Body dark brown/black, opaque
Flavor very strong roasted malt, slightly bitter; no alcohol, no hops, no diacetyl;
Palate medium to full, watery, lively carbonation.

Meets the definition of a stout. Price point seems too high.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 1/2/2014. Pours pitch black color with a 1 finger fairly dense dark tan head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, roasted malt, dark bread, pepper, raisin, plum, fig, light smoke, light licorice, herbal, and roasted/yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roasted malt and fruity/earthy yeast ester notes; with good strength. Taste of big dark chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, coffee, toast, dark bread, pepper, raisin, prune, fig, light licorice, light smoke, herbal, and roast/yeast earthiness. Light roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, coffee, toast, dark bread, pepper, raisin, prune, light smoke, light licorice, and roasted/yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity and robustness of dark/roasted malt and fruity/earthy yeast ester flavors; with a great malt/yeast balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy, and lightly chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with only a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice Belgian stout style. All around good complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roasted malt and fruity/earthy yeast ester flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

Picked up a single of a few different Stillwater brews when they arrived, this among them. 12 oz. bottle with a faun, or satyr, or something on the label. Bottle dated 1/12/14 & thanks to the brewery for that.

Pour is black with moderately high carbonation. Nose is nothing like I expected: huge Belgian yeast backed by a sweetness that's almost as intense. Less gods of roast & chocolate form a lovely backing quartet. Duo. Whatever.

Folklore is a double flute in an elementary band world. Belgian yeasts & slippery sweetness sets hooks in the palate, & they have barbs. Mid-palate brings a smorgasboard of jabs: roast, chocolate, smoke (which really adds a nice twist), plums, other stuff playing kick-the-can with my tongue. Finale brings the strong roast & a final donkey-hoof of smoke. Goes down quickly.

For a catch-all category, this is very good. Plenty going on here & the yeast/Belgian aspect doesn't overwhelm the other nice aspects. Well-brewed.

12 oz bottle served in a Belgian snifter.

Looks like a typical stout, but diverges on all other dimensions. The body is smooth and full, with higher carbonation than usual. The aroma reflects Belgian yeast and spcies more than dark roasted malts. The roasted grains are quite evident in tasting, but this is still spicy and exceptionally complex. Hints of cinnamon and allspice in the lightly sweet flavor

O: Flavorful, spicy and complex, this is a particularly interesting Belgian Stout. Recommended.

Bottle at barvolo. Poured black with a good dark tan head and lacing. Aroma is really awesome, fantastic yeasty aspect, roasty. Taste is quite nice, more light roasty aspects with apricot and smoky coffee, not super dark/thick, but with a molasses and funkiness. Melded fruitiness and a barnyard aspects, stone fruits mixed with roasty malt and a really dry finish. Mouthfeel is thick and satisfying, with a good carb and a spicy feel on the finish. It's maybe not the most amazing beer in terms of the balance but I really appreciate the unique twist. Worth trying, described as a 'Belgian Stout' and gave a pretty good profile for trying to hit that.

Pours a one finger brown head that fades quickly, leaving no lace. Black color, no highlights. Strong carbonation and medium bodied. Light chocolate nose, flavor is roasted-burnt chocolate, some smokiness. $3.79 for a 12oz bottle from Julio's Liquors Westborough, MA.

Poured from 12oz bottle into a tulip.

Appearance: extremely dark brown, nearly black, and allowing no light at all through the body. Head poured a thick finger of frothy tan foam. It's a damn-fine looking beer.

Smell: there's a light chocolatey character with a dry roasty after-scent. There might be a hint of phenolic character in there as well. Not bad, but a bit light on the complexity.

Taste: sweet malt with a good dark-fruit character. There are notes of tobacco and raisin here, and the finish is quite bitter and roasty. Frankly, the roast is a bit over-done for my taste. Mostly good, but the finish is a little too harsh.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a decent carbonation and an OK creaminess. Not great, not bad.

Overall: I feel like this beer has some good elements, but it really doesn't grab me. It's just a bit hot and harsh and not at all the smooth, rich experience I like in a BSDA. Some of the dark fruit flavors are quite nice, but sadly there's just too much here that doesn't quite agree with me.
