on tap at devils den

Pours a deep burnt copper color with some reddish hues. Barely any head or retention to speak of.

Muted nose with floral and earthy touches. Oak and funk with some souring hints.

Nice tartness right up front with some floral hibiscus tones. Touches of fruit and citrus with soft wheat and cracker malt. Funky and earthy with an acidic sourness in the finish.

Lighter medium body, nice carbonation, dry and lingering on the tongue. The description was pretty promising on this but the overall nose and profile felt slightly underwhelming and many of the intended flavors were difficult to detect.

On tap at Devil's Den in Philadelphia.

Bri-Witter looks a darker shade than the normal berliner. This one sports a amberish red look with a very small amount of small dying off white bubbles, No Stick.

Smell is not as bright and bold as other berliners, perhaps from the offset of additions used. I get the hibiscus, I get some berry scent, some musty wheat and the faintest amount of acidic berliner nature.

Taste is nice, light and refreshing. Not as acidic as berliner tend to be, I get some wheat with berry, small traces of pear, some hibiscus flavor and some pale malt that borders on nothing, yet holds the beer together. Interesting and different, which is plus.

Feel is very light bodied, the alcohol is not noticed in the least bit. I get a small pucker towards the end but nothing eye popping, this is a more easy going version of the style, goes down easy with a bit of a acidity in the finish.

Im glad somebody took a step out of the normal realm of B. Weisses. While this was good for a go, I don't think a 2nd glass is necessary. A whole growler with friends outside in the sun, sure thing.

Draft at Tapestry in Philadelphia, PA.

Pours a cloudy pinkish-amber color that kind of looks like a pale grapefruit juice with a half finger off-white that quickly settles into a thin ring. Minimal spots of lace left behind.

Earthy aroma with a balance of bready yeast, citrus, vinous fruit and barnyard funk. There's a bit of acetic solvent as well countered by lemon peel, raspberry, bread and wheat.

Thinner bodied than expected with a tart, sour funkiness that dominates the flavor. Very acidic and a bit harsh with a bit more solvent character than the nose suggests. Sweet vinous fruit notes follow along with some citrus rind and sourdough bread. Very sour and acidic in the finish making it tough to drink. Not bad but kind of harsh and one dimensional.

I flew all the way to Copenhagen to have a local beer. On-tap at the Mikkeller bar, served in a goblet.

Appearance: Pours a cloudy reddish amber with hardly any head at all. This seems to be a bit dark for the style.

Smell: There is a mild tartness with some red berries as well. There is also a touch of sweetness.

Taste: This is a bit watery, but given the style and abv that's ok. Quite tart with the same red berry note from the smell. I'm getting some green apple as well. The finish is light and crisp.

Mouthfeel: The body is light with fluffy carbonation and a dry finish.

Overall: This was a weird one for me. I respect the effort and creativity. The berry notes with the tartness were good. If there is supposed to be anything wit like here, I didn't find that.

First had: on tap at Teresa's, Wayne, PA

Poured a lighter amber color, slightly hazy, with a small bubbly head; not much to speak of in retention and lacing. Light aroma with notes of sweet malts, citrus, distant funky yeast. Taste is similar, sugar and bready malts, lemon zest giving a vaguely sour quality. Light mouthfeel, not quite watery, but it is a very low ABV brew, so the body is about on par. Decently drinkable, but nothing I'd go back for.

On tap at Max's today.

The beer pours a light amber color with fair head retention and light lacing. The nose is fairly nice, with some light lemon lime and a touch of honey. The flavor profile replicates the nose, except there's also something of a biscuit flavor, along with the light sour and soft honey component. Mouthfeel is fairly light, as one would expect given the abv. The finish is clean and pleasant.

Not bad, but nothing to get too excited about either. Don't get the impression that this style is in Brian S's wheelhouse.

So glad to finally be drinking a beer that isn't going to put me on my ass before my dinner is even served...

The beer pours a slightly rosy-amber with no head or lacing. It was served cold, but a 12oz serving is enough to let it warm up a tad. The nose is a slightly sour wheat and there's only a touch of vinegar. I'm not impressed with the nose, even when the beer's has a chance to warm.
The taste is relatively mild as well, but provides a great balance between tart/sour and sweet/wheaty. Obviously there is almost no hint of alcohol... children's beer.
It doesn't pair exceptionally well with my meal, but that's not the reason I ordered it in the first place.
Overall, this beer is relatively overpriced considering the abv ($8/12oz)...WHICH DEFEATS THE PURPOSE OF IT HAVING SUCH A LOW ABV...but quite refreshing and drinkable. So if you're made of money (or find it cheaper than I did), then definitely knock back a few.

On-tap at DBGB Kitchen & Bar, New York, NY

A: The beer is a bit darker than a rosé wine in color and has a very slight amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a very thin ring of bubbles on the surface around the edge of the glass.
S: There are very light floral aromas in the nose along with some hints of sourness.
T: The taste is slightly sour and has light flavors of hibiscus.
M: It feels light-bodied on the palate and has a light amount of carbonation.
O: This beer seems to be a lot easier to drink compared to other beers in the style due to the addition of hibiscus. It’s like adding fruit syrup to make the beer more palatable but without the associated sweetness.

Served on tap at DBGB Kitchen & Bar in New York, NY

A: The hibiscus infusion really effects the color of this beer - it looks almost like a "red" Berliner Weissbier that you would get in Berlin (usually a berry syrup). Pours a hazy ruby red in color. There is a minimal pinkish head on this beer that quickly reduces to absolutely nothing. No lacing is observed.

S: The overall smell of this beer is pretty mild and not too intense. There is some general sourness present as well as a strong floral aroma.

T: The flavor of this beer is also light and not too intense with a pleasant amount of sourness. Also, there is a light floral presence from the hibiscus (reminds of the flavor in the glaze of the hibiscus donut I had a couple of weeks ago).

M: Light bodied with light amounts of carbonation.

O: This beer is extremely easy to drink but might not be the most sessionable beer because a lot of folks will be put off by the sourness. The low ABV means this beer would be easy to have more than one in a session. In my opinion, I would like a little more intensity in the smell and taste.

On tap at Au Cheval, review from written notes.

Served in a narrow footed tulip glass, the beer arrived with a scant head of foam, that soon dwindled to nothing. A vigorous swirl brought some back but it faded equally fast.

Light funky sulfur aroma, eggy, cider apples and Brett yeast. A little different than your typical Berliner, it reminded me of Banhof's Brett Lambicus a bit.

More apple tartness and Brett yeast traces in the taste, hint of popcorn kernels and grainy wheat. Clean and crisp at first, though it felt llike it began to lose carbonation halfway through. Overall interesting and worth a try, but not at $12 a pour.

On-tap at West Lakeview Liquors for the Stillwater tasting.

A - Pours a light amber color, white head, thin collar.

S - Light sweetness, citrus peel, light tartness, some malty grains in there too. All very subtle and enjoyable, and at 3.3%, I'm pumped for how much they were able to pack into this beer.

T - Citrus up front, sweet candy notes, light sour tartness, some grape and floral notes in there too. Again, all very subtle but just excellent to enjoy with this low ABV. Could drink all day long.

M - Light, good carbonation, slightly dry finish.

O - A really nice Berliner that I had a few pours of during the tasting. I would definitely have this one again because of the combo of low ABV with good complexity.

On-tap

Pours a golden orange with a thin white head. Some streams of bubbles forcing their way north. The head fell to a thin powdery coating.

The aroma is of soft lemons and a bit of a sugary sweetness. Sturdy, clean biscuit malt and tons of it.

The malt gives this a firm feel on the palate with a touch of sugary sweetness. Tart lemons add a sweeping lactic acid sourness that never fully makes you pucker.

A light bodied, clean feel. High carbonation with a good sourness. Nothing overpowering but well-crafted.

An easy drinking berliner, not on the upper end of sourness, but that is sometimes a good thing.
