On tap at Max's tap house in Baltimore following a Weezer concert.

A- bright pale yellow with no head and just a hint of haze. Looked simple enough that my light beer friends decided to give it a try.

S- bright citrus of grapefruit peel and pineapple with some pizza dough yeast and bread notes.

T- like the smell the citrus dominates with pineapple being the primary flavor (my friends thought it was a lot like sunny d) surprisingly little bitterness for a beer so hop forwards but certainly not a sweet or malty beer.

M- part of the reason the beer doesn't need heavy hops to maintain the balance away from sweet is how dry it is with just enough body to keep it in the beer realm. The high carbonation also adds to the prickliness and drink ability.

O- As Follows (like everything else I've found from Stillwater) is a well done and interesting beer. The alcohol isn't noticeable at all and I gladly went for a second pint. Very different and refreshing.

12 oz brown bottle - bottled on 12/11/14 [345:14]

Stillwarter As Follows poured a golden yellow color with a 1-finger white head. The head eventually shrunk to a ring of foam. The nose was first 'hit' with a strong aroma of lemons and apple followed by a hint of spice. Similar to the smell, the taste is a bit stronger in spice - white pepper, cloves come to mind. The finish reveals a little hop bitterness. The mouth feel is medium-bodied, very dry with a moderate amount of carbonation.

As Follows is a flavorful Belgian Strong Pale Ale that hides its ABV well.

Pours a hazy deep gold producing a huge, to the point of being difficult to pour, tightly bubbled, beige, champagne like, moderately lasting head that recedes into a thick cap of foam leaving chunky rings & streaks of lace. Aroma is sweet bread & grainy malts, Belgian yeast spice & mustiness (Bret?), coriander, lemon zest, fruity esters of apple, peach & pear, some alcohol (much less than expected of a 9% ABV) . Taste is white bread, grainy malt, Belgian yeast spice, mustiness & delicate white fruits that are thinner than in the nose, lemon zest, boozy alcohol (unlike the nose), spice & only a faint hint of coriander. Peppery, a little boozy & a VERY bitter finish for a Belgian. Aftertaste is similar with the alcohol prominence fading rapidly but the bitter hangs long on the back of the tounge. Mouthfeel is medium bodied moderate-heavy carbonation but smooth.

White head. Golden orange color. Light haze.

Lots of bananas, cloves, Belgian yeast, and spice. Herbal notes and some floral hops.

Bubbly feel. A bit boozy. Dry.

Not my cup of tea.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a Dogfish tulip. Very cool bottle artwork.

L: Pours a cloudy light to medium golden color. 2 fingers of white head. Sparse lacing.

S: Citrus... lemon rind and tangerine. Lots of yeasty goodness.

T/F: Semi-sweet mingled with citrus. Lemon for sure... tropical fruits/pineapple. Complex from the yeast which gives it some good spice. Cloves and nutmeg. Well carbonated. Zesty on the tongue and medium in body. Finish and aftertaste are citrus.

O: My first beer from Stillwater and a delicious one at that. Complex and citrusy... a credit to the style.

Straight pour from a 12oz pry-off bottle to an oversized wineglass (JK stemware). This has a freshness date of October 2017 printed in yellow ink on the shoulder of the bottle (“BBE OCT 17 18 10:28”), which makes me think this was bottled in October of 2016. All things considered, this should be in decent condition for the style. Refrigerated several days.

Appearance (3.0): Probably one and a half fingers of bone white, somewhat crackly foam rise off of the pour, capping a slightly hazy, 24ct gold-colored body. It recedes surprisingly quickly, but hey. It leaves no lacing to speak of, and the head eventually dies down to just a thin collar at the surface of the beer, where it meets the glass. No retention.

Smell (4.0): This offers a full bouquet, right up the middle of what a BSPA should smell like: baked pear and pastry (think pear galette), coriander and white pepper, orange zest, juicy-sweet floral notes, honey, fresh cut grass, unpasteurized apple juice, and maybe grains of paradise. Crushed white grapes. Some slightly medicinal, phenolic undertones come through, blending well with the spice notes present here. The malt is in there with fresh-baked, multigrain country bread, warm with a touch of honey. Nice stuff.

Taste (4.25): Oooh, this is a lot like the nose but much fuller and richer, in some way. The sweetness suggested by the fruit and honey in the nose is emphasized, more than the spice and phenol components. Candied pear, bright apple flesh, a touch of lemon juice, malt balls, toasted white bread with buckwheat honey, and a touch of candied orange peel fill out the sweet, malty, yeasty heart of this beer. Around the edges, light phenolic tones with very light white pepper, stronger coriander, and a light medicinal character offer counterpoint to the malty, yeasty core; on top of it all, grassy and floral bitterness with citrusy notes that play very well with the citrus-oriented part of the beer’s yeasty sweetness offer a nice, hoppy component that doesn’t just complement but really meshes well with the rest of the beer. No booze is obvious, per se, but you can tell it’s hidden nicely by the sweet, yeasty body and some of the phenolic character of this beer. Very well-constructed.

Mouthfeel (4.0): Carbonation is surprisingly subdued, with a low volume but very tingly feel boosted by the alcohol content of this beer. The body has a full feel, with a somewhat north of medium weight and creamy, slick, slightly syrupy feel. It’s a big, full-feeling iteration of the style.

Overall (4.0): In my mind, there are a couple of different ways that you approach this style, from a design standpoint: the less common way is like Duvel, which is crisp and effervescent, and can be quite dry; the other, much more common form is like this beer. It’s rich, creamy, quite fruity, can be quite spicy, very yeasty, and chewy. It’s got some more room for variation than a typical tripel, another blond, strong, pale Belgian style of beer, and this beer is very much a product of that room for variation, if you ask me. It’s big, yeasty, sweet but never cloying, spicy but never aggressive, and phenolic but never offputting. It’s quite good, and a fairly straightforward (but well-built) example of this style, if you ask me. That said, it also isn’t blowing the roof off of the style—it just hits all the necessary notes, and hits them well. Recommended for fans of the style.
