Apparently this beer was made available again recently, as a recent batch was just shipped to several stores in my area. I picked up a bottle about two weeks ago, which I am drinking right now. This is the 2013 vintage. Poured into one of my tulip glasses, this beer pours a slightly cloudy/hazy medium golden/copper color with very little foam or signs of carbonation, even when first poured. This is of course pretty typical for this style of beer. Starts out with a harsh, sour aroma with some hints of grape, green apple, and apricot that gives way to a musty, yeasty, funkiness and certainly a hint of oak. Has a moderately sour funky, musty flavor upfront that gives way to the aforementioned fruity flavors of sour green apple, apricot, and grape. This gives way to a vinegary white wine oakyness. Goes down harsh and it gave the back of my mouth and throat a very slight burning sensation on the way down. Has a dry, slightly vanilla-esque aftertaste. Has a crisp and quite smooth, slightly prickly, light to medium bodied mouthfeel with minimal carbonation. While my experience drinking this style of beer is still fairly limited overall, I feel this beer is probably a good representation of this style. This is not a style of beer I could seem myself drinking pints and pints of on a regular basis, but every now and then I do enjoy a good beer of this style. And this particular beer is certainly a find representation of this style. Worth a try for sure.

Rivertown Ville de Rivere Gueze

Pours with no carbonation, okay minimal white head glowing orange golden body clouded to apricot tones. I'm over the carbonation issue aroma is cider like tart yogurt like zing with mellow citrus earthy funk laden wild yeast notes. Tart white grapes citrus peel like zing with long lasting waves of sour lactic notes however its really enjoyable and easy to drink that's if you enjoy sours. I'm shocked how this Cincinnati based brewer is churning out sours, this is dated 2011 I also have a lambic dated 2012. Such a nice change of pace their regular offerings are mediocre but this shows promise, although I may be chasing this with a Pepcid. Medium bodied almost absent carbonation finishes bone dry like some white wines or ciders. I have nothing but good things to say about this gueze pretty damn authentic flavor someone has been inspired by Belgian brewing traditions!

I don't review often, but I felt with the lack of reviews on this beer I should go ahead and do it. This is an enjoyable beer and can easily be split between two people. This is also a terrible gueuze. It lacks complexity, carbonation, and clarity. A gueuze is the champagne of beer and on most accounts this beer lacks all the qualities one associates with a gueuze. If this beer was branded as an Ohio sour, I would have given it a 3 star rating, but since they are attaching the name gueuze to the beer, it leads to a let down of expectations.

Appearance - Hazy orange. Thin collar, but no head.

Smell - A little acetic. Some lemony aroma. Pale malt. A bit of funk.

Taste - Lemony tartness. Less acetic flavor, but it's still there. Pale malt and some flavors reminiscent of funk.

Mouthfeel - Low carbonation. Moderate sourness.

Overall - Decent sour. Not very exciting.

2013 vintage.

Poured into a tulip. Appears a dark golden color with hints of orange. There is absolutely no carbonation whatsoever, and there is a complete lack of head.

The nose is very sour and slightly harsh, with some hints of apricots and peaches. The taste follows suit, with loads of acetic acid. The lack of carbonation makes this very difficult to drink at points.

The mouthfeel is very dry and obviously, completely flat. Overally, I think this could be a decent brew if it was properly carbonated, but unfortunately something was not handled properly. I'll revisit again if this is corrected.

Served in a small tasting goblet, quick review from notes.

Bright golden orange, sharp clarity, thin wispy foam ring around the edges. The occasional stray rising bubble gives it an inkling of carbonation, though it's nearly still like an unblended lambic.

Aroma is very nice, woody and citric, slight musty funk about it that rings true with authenticity.

Taste has a juicy, lemony citrus quality and bursts with citric acid and musty wet wood. Dry woody finish, gripping and tannic with a pleasant lingering aftertaste. Soft carbonation, it's barely there and ebbs over time, but it's not completely flat. The 3-year-old lambic really adds some complexity and authenticity here, it's vaguely reminiscent of Cantillon Classic Gueuze with less body, funk, and bubbles.

750 ml bottle. Served in a flute, the beer pours a hazy straw gold color with no head at all. No lacing, either. Aroma is nice but subtle, the brew smells like tart lemons, and a bit of musty funk. Taste is pretty much just like the aroma, but there's a bit of a cidery flavor too. It's nice and tart, it's not a strong tartness although it does get better as the beer warms up some. There's also a lingering tart finish. Mouthfeel/body is light, it has low carbonation and it's very easy to drink. I think it's a solid brew overall. Definitely worth a try. $11.99 a bottle.

Pours a light fizzy head covering that fades fairly quickly, no lacing, super hazy wheat orange sun colored, couple of yeast chunks.

Pours somewhat hazy straw with a small quickly receding head and little lacing.

Tart and funky aromas. Lemon, grapeskin and crackery malt with some funk and oak.

Tastes come off like a gueuze fairly well. Lemon up front followed by some hay funk. Sour tart grapes and drying oak on the back end. A light level of acidity.

Mouthfeel is not quite as creamy as the traditional lambics, but not too bad. Carbonation level is medium.

Pretty good beer and glad someone in the midwest is making good sours on a consistant basis. Probably my favorite of Rivertown's offerings so far.

Bottle shared by Bob last night. '12 vintage.

This one pours a hazy yellow-ish orange, with a small head, and barely any lacing.

This smells moderately sour, with a bit of oak, some green apple, and some lemon.

This is a pretty good take on a traditional gueuze, but it's not perfect. There's some musty funk, not a whole lot, with some slightly vinegary sourness, and some green apple flavors. It doesn't feel quite as boldly sour as other gueuzes that I've had, but it is a '12 vintage, so maybe time has mellowed this one. There's some vague fruitiness, maybe a bit of lemon.

This is medium bodied, with an active amount of carbonation. Fairly drinkable.

A - It kind of looks like apple juice. There is practically no head.

S - It has a dry, musty cider smell.

T - The taste is tart with a dry finish. It has that cider taste, too.

M - Moderate with virtually no carbonation. My mouth almost puckers from the tartness.

O - It started out rather bland, but the tartness grew. I am partial to it since it is from my home state, and I had to drink Cincinnati beer for the Wild Card game tonight.

A: The beer is very hazy pale yellow in color and has a bit of fine particles floating in suspension. No carbonation is visible. It poured with wispy lacing on the surface and a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: There are moderate aromas of sourness in the nose.
T: Like the smell, the taste is rather sour and has oaky notes of cedar wood from the the barrel aging process along with some hints of fruit.
M: It feels light-bodied on the palate and has a low to moderate amount of carbonation. There is some dryness in the finish.
O: This is a fine example of the style that has nice sour aromas and flavors but isn't overpowering. The cedar adds to the complexity.

2011 bottling. Poured into a Lindeman's tumbler. The beer has a nice cler golden color, but even a rough pour produces nary a bubble. Like most of Rivertown's beers, this one is terribly, terribly undercarbonated. I can forgive this in a porter or stout, but this is a GEUZE. It's supposed to have the sparkle of a champagne. Unacceptable. The nose, however, has nice notes of sour apples, green grapes, and white wine vinegar.

Light body, but the lack of carbonation just kills the feel. There is no sparkle and there is no prickly rush of bubbles to wake up the palate. The flavor is nice and acidic with flavors of sour apples, lemons, and white wine. The tart flavors are very soft and not overbearing, making the beer quite drinkable and refreshing. I should also note that it has the same faint cheese-like aftertaste that seems to be present in all of Rivertown's sours. Like their other sours though, it doesn't detract too much from the drinking experience and it isn't even noticeable in every swallow.

This beer is a great tragedy. I enjoyed the flavor very much, but am forced to penalize it because of the complete lack of effervescence that is expected in this style. Sadly, I cannot recommend this beer (unless you have the ability to carbonate it yourself).

A: Pale hazy yellowish gold. no head at all. no carbonation either.

S: Rotten peach, very funky. a hint of crisp apple. lemon. sour and very acidic.

T: Sour acidic funky kick in the tastebuds. Tart. ripe green apple. funk. lots of bright abrasive citrus. sweet honey and a musty finish. a bit like cider.

M: No carbonation at all. very light.

O: Very nice. a pleasant easy drinker. i would have liked a little more complexity and a little more carbonation. /85

Poured from the bottle into a tasting snifter.

Appearance: Pours a clear amber color with a golden hue. There was no head at all on my pour.

Smell: Light, tart, and funky. I'm getting some hay as well as lemon and a yeasty component.

Taste: Light and funky, but not particularly sour. The interesting funky flavors to most of the work here. Citrus tartness here but no real sour vinegar like note. A bit yeasty with a hint of white wine as well.

Mouthfeel: The body is medium with tingly carbonation and a dry finish.

Overall: This was a very nice beer. The fact that it wasn't super sour made it interesting in my mind. I enjoyed the funky notes. I would have more given the chance.

Poured into a tulip. I had always thought of Rivertown as that local brewery that doesn't really care much about beer. Perhaps I was wrong or perhaps some internal changes were made in the last couple years. Anyway, here we have my second wild ale from them. The first one was very good, so I'm leaning toward expecting something from this one too.

2.0 A: Hmmm. This gueuze is awfully low in carbonation. The cap came off very easily, so it's possible it was never put on properly. Anyway, well hazed dark yellow color. Just about a quarter finger of head formed from an aggressive pour and it fell almost immediately.

3.5 S: This probably has a lot to do with the carbonation level not being adequate, but the nose on this is weaker than I'd like. Still, it's pretty good. Plenty of acidity that leans toward acetic. Fresh outdoors funkiness a la running stream and leafy woods. Also some basement/sweat sock funk in there as well.

3.5 T: The taste is also good, but it is just a bit shallow. Lemony acetic vibes with tangy lactic acid, apple fruitiness, and the funks mentioned in the nose.

2.0 M: Lighter medium body. Barely any carbonation. Dead, lifeless mouthfeel. Sad.

3.25 D: I have no doubts that this was a good beer when it went into the bottle. Too bad the technical aspects fucked it up. The reason for this not having the proper carbonation doesn't matter. This is how I bought it so this is how it is reviewed. I haven't heard about this being much of a problem, so pick it up if you see it.

A: Pours a hazy medium straw yellow in color with moderate to heavy amounts of fine visible carbonation rising from the bottom of the glass along with some fine particles in suspension and just a hint of golden yellow highlights. The beer has a half finger tall fizzy white head that reduces to a medium to large sized patch of thin film and a medium thick ring at the edges of the glass. Minimal amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Overall the aroma of moderately sour with light to moderate notes of light fruit (apricots and apple cider) and oak barrels from the aging.

T: Upfront there is a light to moderate flavor of sourness with some vinous and musty grape notes. That is followed by light flavors of slightly sweet apricots and apple cider but overall it does not take away from the sourness. Light notes of oak from the barrel aging.

M: Light bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Light amounts of dryness in the finish a moderate amount of acidic prickliness.

O: A very nice example (especially one made in the US) of the style - enough sourness to keep sour lovers interested but definitely not overpowering. Very enjoyable.

Nose is petty nice, it has done tart sour lambic like but a nice balanced smooth blended addition. Hint if lemony funk, sour tart fruit like but light malt too, fresh citrus spritz, light oak barrel too. Light sour funk and vinous musty aroma.

Taste come on with a nice sourness, cidery lambic, with little lemon and grassy funk. Some tart fruit but seems a little light and watery somehow. However, the nice blending of vintages brings a good smooth taste, light vanilla oak, etc. Little vinous and tart acidic bite, little yeasty funk too, sour almost lacto like creamy sour but wild and not too funky. Juicy sourness but still a bit thin. Finish its dry but not too flemmy, nice sour fruit and tartness lingering with acidic and little lemony funk.

Mouth is thinner, decent carb, light acidic bite.

Overall nice but not great. The blending and barrel round out the sour funk well, but overall just a bit too thin.

A) Bright golden yellow with some cloudiness. This must be flat because I could get but a scarce few bubbles even with my best BCBS-blah-blah-variations style pour. Stands to reason there was no head and no lace.

S) Stinky cheese, vinegar, sour vinous notes, damp oak. The aroma is minimal in terms of mustiness. It's pretty good, actually.

T) Sharp, sour brevity. Quite vinous; heavy on the grapes. It's close to drinking slightly musty grape juice. Modest oak notes.

M) The body is light and fairly thin but it's actually not too bad for having essentially no carbonation. Dry, musty finish.

D) Overall, it's a bit on the bright side but I think it's fair enough.

A- Pours an orange body with a small white head that reduces quickly to a white ring.

S - woah there! This stuff is funky! Barnyard, leather, sour lactic, grapes, musty, oak, sour lemons, and dare I say it - horse blanket. Very inviting.

T - upfront is a punch in the mouth of sour lemons, white wine, vinegar, sour apple, lactic acid. The follow throw exhibits lots of oaky, leathery, musty, funky notes. The barrel leaves an aftertaste of oak and vanilla.

M- high carbonation , easy drinking light body.

This beer is SO underrated. It is a superb representation of how a gueuse should taste - and the barrel adds complexity and flavor. I can compare this to the better know gueuzes and American wild ales.

Seems like Rivertown is hit or miss on the sours. Ojos Negros, Sour Cherry Porter, and Lambic are all excellent. This gueuze is not. It isn't at the level of Pestilence, but it was disappointing. My biggest complaint with this beer was that it had absolutely NO carbonation. It was as flat a beer as I have ever seen come out of a bottle (excluding some of my early day homebrew). As far as I am aware, a gueuze is supposed to have extremely high carbonation, almost champagne-like. The aroma and flavor were right on par with many beers in the same style. Very sour with notes of lemon and sour grapes as well as some must. Dry and tart. It was just very dull and bland. The lack of carbonation really hurts this beer. I would pick it up if I saw it from a new batch just to see how it is with carbonation.

A taste of Belgium makes its way to the greater Cincinnati area with the rustic, earthen, and unmistakable charm of Lambic. This blended gueuze is both sharp and tart, along with mature musty distinctive notes from nose 'til finish.

The pour delivers a spritzy champage-like pour that does more than those sparkling wines- it retains a dainty white foam character that quickly reduces to a skirt along the edge. Golden rod in color, the hazy ale is classic Belgian- even unblended lambic at times.

Cidery aromas rise first, but carry with it complementary notes of sour grapes, crab apple, and more pungent sandalwood aromatics. Musty aged oak, dusty attic aromas, dried lime, sea air, light saddle leather and vinous wine rot are just a few of the complexities that waft over the olfactories with each return to the glass. Even peppery notes of cumin and cinnamon make a vague introduction before trailing off in obscurity.

Dry cracker-like maltiness lay the foundation for moderate sourness to come. Light in sweetness, the dry malt 'beer' character supports the more wine-like notes of apple cider vinegar, chardonnay, and earthen pungent woods that are reminescent of weathered oak and sassafras. Dried limes, lemons, and apples offer an estery and highly tart taste just ahead of its mild peppery rebuttal. Its quick and snappy finish of sea brine and dried oak offers a terse memory before its thirst quenching closure arrives.

Light and refreshing, even to start- the beer jumps right into a racy acidity that probes the taste buds and evokes mouth whetting properties. Its short-lived middle palate leads to a quick and dry finish of light woodish tannin and a pleasant powdery dryness. The quick closure is lightly astringent and palate stripping- suggesting that each taste is just as refreshing as the first.

Where the beer carries a more somber and moderate stride of intensity, the complete ensemble of flavor profiles of gueuze are all alive, well portrayed, and properly balanced- there seems to be a sense that the beer is dialed down with regard to intensity in taste, sourness, strength, dryness, and overall rusticity. It's a fascinating beer that graduates up from the syrupy fruited versions and into the authentic world of sour.

Okay, so here goes...

2013 edition

Appearance: very pale with low carbonation. (wtf????? it's geuze!!!)

Smell: there are some simple acidic notes, mostly lemon with an off handed cream cheese smell that's less than enjoyable.

Taste: Big acidic notes up front. A little overwhelming. There is an odd sweet character in the background that I can't quite put my finger on, but it makes me gag.

Feel: Again, this didn't seem to be very carbonated which is odd for a geuze.

After having their lambic, this was a real letdown. Not the least bit true to style.

This bottle was a casualty of a recent flight back from the Midwest, so I had to drinking sooner than expected.

A-low carbonation, yellow/orange hue

S-nice apple and green grape with funk

T-much of the same, a really nice bite on the tongue

M-the carbonation is in the funk and fuzz of this beer. I think it was miscapped, but that makes me wonder if it would have been even better.

O-I enjoyed this beer quite a bit, reminds me a bit of the Bear Republic's Tartare. I would buy this again. Thanks Bowling Green, KY.
