I'm happy to enjoy this bottle of Kriek shortly after trying the same brewer's Oud Kriek just a few days ago. Much of this review is the comparison of the two.

As stated with the Oud Krik, this beer opens with less flare tha expected- only light pressure forces the cork out of the bottle and with a slight pop. The pour delivers a deep redish, pinkish, purpleish concoction that releases a loosely knit head that billows to the top of the glass, allowing only a 3/4 pour into the chalice. Lacing very well, the beer struggles to hold it's foamstance above the lightness of the sourness and astringent brew.

Strong aromas of vineous cherries, red wines, lactic vinegar notes and with a strength that waters the mouth, squints the eyes, puckers the lips, and causes light sweating. Earthy tones of barnyard, aged and wine-soaked oak, and musty cork notes show the power and complexity of the wild yeasts.

The clean lactic character leaves just enough malt flavor to showcase the rare Shaerbeekse cherries well. Supportive flavors of lemons, lines, crabapples, grapes, and under-rippened berries provide much complexity in the backdrop. Very clean tastes that begin to leave the earthy, musty tones to the aromas, and not transfering deep into the flavor profile.

The mouthfeel is sharp, acidic, and pleasantly astringent without becomming grainy. The weight of the malts is the only slight buffer from the extreme tartness of the beer. The second pour from the 750 became much smoother and richer textured with the inclusion of the sediment.

This beer seems younger or greener than the Oud Kriek. The Shaerbeekse cherries may be a more tart version of those used in the Oud Kriek, or perhaps I have a new bottle that is less aged. Regardless, the comparisons are so slight that I might not recognize them if not having both within the same week. Fresher, more tart, and with an overall vibrant quality, I may give the slight edge to the Shaerbeekse version.

2004 vintage.

A: Ruby red with pink hues. A small pink head that disappears quickly. Small lacings.

S: Funky notes of aged cheese, dusty cellar and mold. Pleasant rich cherry notes balance the funk. Some acidity. A hint of wood.

T: The flavor is tart with interesting and pleasant notes of sour cherries. A salty funky note of cheese and horse blanket. Faint residual sweetness. Notes of lemon, wood and grass. The finish is dry with a mild grassy bitterness and hints of minerals and lingering cherry aromas.

M: Medium body with pleasant carbonation and a not overly dry finish.

D: A very good fruit lambik with an interesting cherry character. Impressive.

I tried the Oude Kried last night and was really impressed, so I was hoping to be blown away by this one.

The aroma is lightly medicinal, full of oak, cherry, leather, and earthy barnyard.

More of a black cherry on the palate. Not as sour as I had hoped for, could be brighter. Has a hint of smoke and leather. A hint of brett, and similar to the Oude Kriek, it has an oaky, French Pinot-like dryness with a meaty (beef) finish. The funk is there in its glory, the cherry later softens up just a touch, so it's important to let this one breath for a while.

All things considered, while this is very good beer, though disappointing, I'd have to take the Oude Kriek over it.

Bottle purchased at 3F for 9 euro, into a wine glass; Bottled 4/25/11

A - Pours a clear deep garnet with one and a half fingers of pink foam.

S - Big aroma of tart cherries complemented with some must, but not very heavy must. A faint amount of oak. Pretty straightforward, but smells great.

T - Again, big tart cherry , but there is more musty funk in the taste than what I got from the aroma. Quite tart indeed, but not at all acetic. Earthy funk brings a mild bitterness. A bit of lemon in the finish. Extremely tasty.

M - Light and crisp with low carbonation. Tart throughout, but some bitterness creeps in on the finish.

O - Very tasty kriek. The flavors from the fruit are very nice. I enjoyed this more than the regular 3F Oude Kriek. Wish it were cheaper (and easier to find) in the US...

The beer pours a dark red color with a white head. The aroma is cherry, oak, vanilla, tartness and funk. The flavor is strong cherry with vanilla, oak and tartness. The beer is very dry and is pretty funky. Very drinkable and very well done. Medium mouthfeel and low carbonation.

pours a very pink red color with a small light pink head. Nose is light but very tart and very funky.

Taste is awesome, so tart an sour and super funky. Mouthfeel is fairly light and thin but it's very drinkable. Its super tasty and drinkable worth seeking out.

Dark ruby and red with pink edges and a thin pink head. Leaves small spots and thin webs of lacing down the glass.

An incredible combination consisting of incredibly powerful, stinging sourness, plump and juicy cherries, and earthy oak. Everything is in balance yet powerful, all at once. Perfect.

The flavor too is just phenomenal. The cherries are vibrant and tart, the sourness is consistent and strong from sip to swallow. This is lip puckering stuff here! Phenomenal.

Medium bodied with high carbonation.

A truly special beer. One of my favorites.

Beautiful dark pink pour with great clarity and a big frothy lighter shade of pink head to it. A work of art. Massive sour aroma, possibly the most I've ever come across. Damn. Delivers on the cherry aroma as well, could be bigger, comes with some oak to round it out, just another amazing sense experience. Stays away from what is often undesireable funk aroma and just goes heavy on the sour.

Heavily sour, acidic, big time cherry delivery, yet a light body, not syrupy or anywhere near being overly sweet. If you're all about sour and cherries, this is your beer. Discernably better than the cherry stuff from Cantillon, who makes nothing but excellent stuff. Its not just cherry though, the acidic and light body makes me think some lemon and lime have a role up in here. These shaerbeekse cherries really seem way more tart than any other kind.

Great dry mouthfeel, sourness never fades, good at any temperature. Amazing stuff at a high price tag, but definitely worthy on special occasions.

EDIT: The last bottle I had could have used a tad more carbonation, still lovely, but had to change the 4.85 score it was. We'll see if it rises back to the top, still have plenty of bottles on hand.

Intense Red sampled during the RBWG-2014 in Asheville.

Brilliant ruby red color; clear, with a thin, semi-durable, top coat.

Aroma: Moderately funky; slightly fruity.

Flavor: As usual for style, this tastes much better than it smells, and it is much fruitier. Cherries, raspberries, and vague soft fruits in a moderately tart mix. Fairly intense, as promised.

Pours a deep and dark ruby color with a half-finger pink head. The head recedes quickly into a wispy layer on top leaving almost no lacing.

Smells of full and tart cherries more than anything with solid amounts of grassy funk. As the beer warms the aromas skew more tart the tart side of things, even more so than it already is, and influences from the barrels come into play with slight amounts of vanilla.

Tastes very good. Tart cherry flavors tempered by earthy and musty funk. The tartness increases near the end of the sip and ends with a tart and lactic finish. As the beer warms the little bit of sweetness that was present in the front end of the sip diminishes and mild hints of vanilla come into play.

Mouthfeel is very good. It's got a smoother than average thickness with active carbonation.

Drinkability is good. I didn't have a problem finishing my glass and could have another.

Overall this is one of the crisper smelling sours I've had in a while and the way it opens up as it warms is very nice. Well worth a shot.

A- This beer pours a dense crystal clear red body with a brown hue to it and a pink sherbert head that is bubbly and soon fades away. The carbonation is bright and fast tiny bubbles.

S- The light barnyard aroma has a bright earthy quality that grows followed by a dry jammy cherry note in the finish.

T- The dry light barnyard note has a slight watery taste before a full fruit flavor with a soft tartness come in to play. There is a light dark cherry note in the finish that takes on a slight jammy quality. The finish has notes of old wood and a light aspirin brett hint.

M- The light mouthfeel has no real astringency and a dry fizz in the finish.

O- The barnyard and cherry notes are nice but turn a bit watery as the beer opens up. The very soft tartness and not much depth make it a bit drap to drink the whole bottle.

Served from a 750 ml caged and corked bottle at Cooper's Seafood in Scranton, Pa. The beer poured a nice redish color with a medium thickness pink head and good retention and lacing. The aroma is of sweet cherries but also a nice kick of barnyard funk. The taste is very tart and strong cherry taste along with the funk but the funk is not overpowering. A very enjoyable taste as if the cherries were freshly picked. This ranks right up there with any Cantillon offerings.

2011 750mL shared among seven. Kicking myself for not buying both bottles on the shelf at 35.99 in 2013.

This is an absolutely beautiful lambic. This bottle had no overpowering sourness mentioned in other reviews, also no medicine.

Amazingly clean with subtle funk, cherry, lightly sour, light body, mild carb with almost no pop when the cork came out, but nicely effervescent when swished. Again, it's a shame I didn't get both dusty bottles off the shelf. I would love to have this again, maybe with a few less people. Everyone absolutely loved it, even the "i don't really like sours" guy at the share.

Bottle. Pours a reddish purple with a minimal violet head. Aroma of brett, cherries, wood, and some funk. Taste is similar, but wasn't quite as sour as the nose. Lots of cherries, dark fruits, wine, and spice, with consistent sour present. Fairly light body with medium carbonation. Very nice beer with a lot of complexity, but lacking the strong sour taste i associate with a lambic.

$21 USD at Premiere Gourmet. Pinkish like a rose wine, with a small crown. Cherry aroma. Dry taste, fairly medium mouthfeel. Only the real thing, with a bit of wild yeast in there. Very good example of style, drying mouthfeel. Definately replaces wine at the meal.
Had a year and a half later and the ageing and being a very fortunate bottle made it exceptionally smooth, good oaking.

Have one of these in a cellar which I intend to review in a few years, but came upon several fresh bottles (bottled April, 2010) at a reasonable price, so decided to pop one open. Poured from a 750mL caged-and-corked bottle into my Drie Fonteinen tumbler.

Carnelian liquid, nearly clear (I didn't let the bottle rest long enough after chilling it I think), glowing cerise/ruby when held to the light, with a cap that vanishes before I have a chance to note the color. Quite bubbly despite the lack of head. [Edit: Subsequent pours from a greater height produced an active layer of cherry blossom foam, though retention is still poor]

You can almost smell the cherries being poured into the lambic base - lush full ripe fruit that are dark and tart all at once. The wild yeasts are immediately apparant as well, though the fruit dominates.

Oh my! Bracingly sour - intensely concentrated cherry backed with what could almost be lemon juice if not for the funk. Extremely long finish, once the sourness finally fades, an array of mild barnyard elements emerge, typified by the "horse blanket," fermenting hay, finished compost, along with a hint of aspirin and tea tree oil. These subtleties are easy to overlook against the bright blast of sour cherries - this being the most sour (and among the most fruity) beers I've sampled. Maybe not perfect, but superlative.

Light-bodied, well carbonated, and brisk.

While not a pretentious beer (being an ancient/rustic/ almost primordial style), it is still one to be sipped, cherished, and engaged with your full attention. Would pair very well with a variety of cheeses.

2008 Vintage. Poured from a foiled, corked and caged 750ml bottle into a Cantillon tulip. Like wearing Addidas pants with Nike sneakers... Shared with schen9303.

Pours a 1 finger frothy pink head with low retention. Beer is a dark, semi-clear ruby. Lacing is non-existant but with decent legs. Slightly above average due to the color.

Nose is tart cherry, some cobweb and hay funk. Some yeasty sharpness. Not overly funky or cheesy but with a robust fruit aroma. Nice.

Opens tart cherry, some yeasty spiciness. More big semi-sweet cherry notes towards the middle. Cobweb, wet hay, and barnyard funk. Yeasty fruit throughout. Some light bitterness. Cinnamon and oak notes towards the end. Finish is tart cherry puree with some band-aid taste. Really fruit forward, funky, and tart. Exceptional.

Light to medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Light but lively in the mouth and some bubbles going down. Dry finish with a puckering and dry, lingering aftertaste. Really accents the flavor well.

While its not the most impressive looking or smelling fruit lambic, Schaerbeekse Kriek is definitely among the most fruit forward and tastiest. Probably one of, if not the most impressive widely available lambic out there now. Fresh vintages take almost completely blow away the competition in my opinion. Worth the hefty price tag.

I astutely noted that they actually gave us the wrong beer - the 25 Euro Schaerbeekse Kriek instead of the 13 Euro Oude Kriek. Jackpot.

The label was molded and eroding - the beer was deep garnet and as tart as advertised. This kriek uses tarter cherries than the Oude Kriek which was pretty transparent. I preferred the 7-year old Oude Kriek and its decadent finish, but this was a nice treat as well. Tart, notes of balsamic, enamel decaying bite.

Thanks to a friend for bringing this back from the Cracked Kettle in Amsterdam. Oude kriek? How about old funky kriek. The cherries are just barely in here. Sure, the appearance is a hazy red with a short pink head (that quickly disappears). The aroma is big on horseblanket, leather, fresh garden, herbal tea. The flavor has more lemon peel and lime with a drop of cherry sugar candy. The finish is tart farmhouse funk.

pours a bright clean and hazy pink and ruby red. pretty much no head what so ever on this. very still looking.

bright cherry flavor, very vibrant and fresh. lots of oak combined to really add some depth.

very tart up front. cherry flavor then emerges and and carries through out, finishing sour. light oak through out although towards the finish it pops out to combine with the sour. not much funk if any.

very light carbonation with a bit of tingle. very dry through out. mouth just puckers.

overall, i was a bit let down considering the high price tag associated with it. the regular drie fonteinen kriek has a bit of a better cherry flavor. quite good, i had no issues drinking this and if the price was cut back drastically, i would buy this far more often.

Pours out dark maroon in color with a tiny pink head that dissipated almost right away.

Smell is definately a little brett, sour cheries, smells REALLy nice. Taste is REALLY nice tart cherries. Really one that takes the enamal off you teeth.

Mouthfeel is thin with a timy bit of carbonation but it seems thicker because its so sour. Really a great beer. I wish I could find this on the shelf all the time.

750ml bottle vintage 2008 from K&L generously shared by alfrantzell. Thanks a lot, Arne! This is one of the more difficult names to spell, as evidenced by the fact that it's spelled differently on BA vs. RB. Both sites do agree, however, that it's a damn fine beer, and I also agree with this assessment.

Pours a deep, clear crimson color with a decent pink head that bubbles away fairly quickly.

Aroma is loads of tart cherries, oak, and funkiness, including my favorite aroma: horseblanket. It's like they took an old blanket off the dirtiest, sweatiest horse in the barn and threw it right into the fermenter. I love it.

Flavor is also really awesome and heavy on the cherry. Somewhat sour with brett and lacto/pedio. Very earthy and oaky. More funky horseblanket and definite hints of other cloths used to cover various livestock and zoo creatures, whatever those may be.

Dry, acidic, and lively on the palate. Medium body. Exactly to style on the mouthfeel.

Drinkability is good but not quite outstanding. Overall though, this beer is outstanding. Easily one of the better fruit lambics out there.

Beautiful bright raspberry color, soft carbonation, no head retention. Intense sour cherry aroma, intoxicating.

Light fresh tart, fizzy in the mouth, so succulent, so tangy, such a classic dry lambic with pure, delicious expression of fruit; no sweetness to speak of. Initial sharpness softens and mellows as this amazing creation changes and develops in the glass. A treat. Had this once before at Hop Devil Grill in Manhattan; compares very favorably with Cantillon Kriek. One of those brews that will beguile beer and wine drinkers alike.

750 mL bottle poured into a snifter. 2008 bottle.

Appearance - Red body. Not much of a head, but there wasn't much of a pop when the cork came out.

Smell - Still has a strong cherry flavor. Less of the Drie Fonteinen signature funk. More of a lemony acidity. Hefty oak to it.

Taste - Lemon sourness up front. Cherry flavor isn't sweet. More dry and wine like. Finishes very dry and oaky.

Mouthfeel - Mild sourness. Much more dry than sour. Low carbonation, but that could be age. Mistiness does indicate its age though.

Overall - Lacking the Drie Fonteinen complexity, but that cherry flavor is very nice. That's the point I guess.

Poured from the 750ml bottle into my Cantillon wine glass.

Brilliant, clear red color. A small cap of pink fizzles away quickly. Pretty.

Aroma is less of cherry pie than the Oude Kriek. The cherry in this one seems a bit darker, less sweet. Also, there's a significant musty basement component to this that is absolutely great, rivaling Cantillon's signature aroma.

Taste is excellent. Cherries, cherries, cherries. A bit of a funk, though not as much as I expected considering the aroma. Very sour throughout.

Mouthfeel is very good. Medium-bodied for the style, very dry, very quaffable despite the high acidity. This is too easy to drink.

Highly recommended.
