What the hell Steven? Thanks a ton for giving me a nice-sized pour of this yesterday, 4/26/2014.

A- Hazy, darker yellow body. Clearly lower in carbonation; but it does come with a half finger white head that retains surprisingly well for such an old lambic.

S- Bold and assertive is what I'd describe the nose and flavour profile of this lambic. Pungent wood, lemon zest and musty barnyard funk are the big players here. Citrus rind, peppercorns, Senne valley funk. The woody, moldy citrus zest is the strongest player in the nose and it is excellent.

F- Again, bold and assertive lambic. I haven't had a ton of these before, but the citrus rind character comes through in a strong way as the barnyard, mustiness isn't as strong as you'd figure. Complex in character since the lemon zest, white vinous character, rind, wood, Senne funk all conspire to bring an unique (thus far) geuze character. Again, the flavour profile is so bold that it made a major impression after drinking full pours of fresh Cantillon Fou' Foune and Cuvée-St-Gilloise; which you'd think would make a 11-year old lambic seem less flavourful.

M- Medium bodied, dry and refreshing. Carbonation is quite low, as expected. Finish is dry with a good bit of funk and old lemon skins.

O- This is great. Part of the excitement may be that this is a 11-year old lambic and these don't come around every day, but even when I correct for that bias, there is no way I can deny that this geuze is very complex and flavourful despite its age. This was definitely a highlight of a very excellent day. Thanks Steven!

Presentation: The afternoon of Saturday 26th March 2005 was spent at the excellent De Heeren van Liederkercke. Whenever I get the chance to visit this most excellent of establishments, I drink only one style……traditional lambics.

So imagine my surprise when I managed to get a bottle of each of the Wedding Geuze that was produced for the marriage of the owners. A “His” and “Hers” Geuze so to speak, but better known as the Roos (Rose) and Blauw (Blue). As far as I know this is only available at De Heeren van Liederkercke and it is a Limited Edition, at least whilst stocks last.

The second of the bottles, which arrived at my table in one of the traditional whicker baskets along with a Drie Fonteinen Tumbler, was the “His”, listed on the bottle as the Blauw, or Blue, but moreover the label has a light Blue background with a painting of a naked Man’s groin on it, with nothing left to the imagination!

The Blauw is properly labeled “Geuze Cuvée Joost en Jessie” [the names being rotated in order on the Blauw from the Roos]. It is dated 6-9-2003, which is September 2003 as this is a Euro-style date. The Blauw is blended with older lambics; 1 year old Lambiek Lindemans and 4 year old Lambiek Girardin, which is then aged & matured in Oak Barrels. Unfiltered and Refermented in 750ml bottles, Cork and Caged. The label, apart from the striking nature of the naked Penis, also refers to “Brouwerij Ambachtelijke Gueuzestekerij”, not sure to what this pertains but I do know that this was blended by Drie Fonteinen, which is I guess why it was served with a 3-F Gueuze Tumbler!

Appearance: Dark amber-orange body with some copper bronze hints. Large dirty white head quickly fills the 3-F Tumbler. It settles with an appearance of bone sans marrow, complex chambers interconnect as the frothy head rescinds. Thicker and deeper than the Roos, the head remains ½” thick at all times in the 3-F Tumbler. Moderately carbonated, yet a gentle swirl captures the thick smattered lacing and reabsorbs it into the body of the brew. Looks better than the Roos, which was surprising as I expected the older lambics in this Gueuze to detract from the head, guess I was wrong. Smoother presentation than the Roos, the Blauw looks fantastic in the Tumbler.

Nose: As with the Roos, yet again, the nose impresses immensely, another treat. The oak is still prevalent but the overwhelming charge is of old musty barns. Some horse blanket funk but it is in the background. The foreground has some grapefruit, pineapple and a light lemon zest. A light cold tea hint finishes with some yeasty sourness. Minimal tartness, the damp wood sourness lingers heavy above the Blauw in the end.

Taste: Damp, dank woody grain splices the fruity pineapple chunks, sour grapefruit and sharp lemon zing, the latter citric character fades quickly. Musty wet horse blanket occupies the middle, citric lemon fades, as does the minimal tartness that briefly appeared. The sourness rules in the Blauw. Tannin fills the finish along with a soaking wet vinegary oak wood. Complex, it tells a story, but I feel the tastes are dominated by the 4 year old Girardin, which is not exactly a bad thing, but it lends a heavier feel to this Gueuze.

Mouthfeel: I suspect the 1 year Lindemans Lambiek ably supports both the appearance with the smooth head and the mouthfeel with its young zesty character. The young conditioning of the Lindemans Lambiek is nicely balanced against the older feel of the tannin and dry vinegary wood from 4 year old Girardin Lambiek. Solid.

Drinkability: Unquestionably a great Gueuze for sure, if I had the opportunity to drink this one all day, I would, but if it was a choice between the Roos and Blauw, I think I would opt for the Roos, for the Blauw lacks a little vivaciousness that the Roos has.

Overall: I noted that it was a rather steep €11 for the 750ml Bottle…..but you know what, this was worth every single Euro-Cent. Sadly, I could only get the one bottle of each (Blauw & Roos) of these, and I shared them both with friends at the Pub.

I shouldn’t really compare the Blauw to the Roos, but it is hard not to do so, given that they are a “pair of Gueuze’s” of sorts. The Blauw is undoubtedly superb and well worth the coin, but I’m not sure that this will age as well as the Roos will, but what I wouldn’t give for the chance to find out!!!

Reviewing the infamous Geuze Cuvée J&J Blauw from Brouwerij Drie Fonteinen out of Belgium.

2003 vintage bottle served in a Drie Fonteinen fountain logo gueuze glass and enjoyed on 02/11/14. Huge thank you and shout out to Paul for graciously sharing this whale! Review is from iPhone notes.

Appearance: Pours a murky, unfiltered honey color with a nice fade to yellow at the bottom of the glass with three fingers of head that slowly recedes to a thick half finger layer. Poor lacing and retention, but what else would you expect for an 11 year old gueuze? 5/5

Smell: What is striking about this beer is how complex and balanced it is. The big unique character here is a distinct cedar wood aroma, which I absolutely adore. Cedar wood, hay/straw, lemon rind, and a very light/subtle barnyard funk. There’s also a little bit of “raisin” that comes through around room temperature. At first, there’s a touch of pool water/chlorine in the nose, but that breathes out and disappears after 15 or so minutes. Very subtle barnyard character and a hint of resinousness. Has a nice residual citrus/fruity brightness, which grows as the beer warms up. 5/5

Taste: Straw-forward upfront, with a little more barnyard funk than nose but still pretty mellow and surprisingly subtle overall for an 11 year old gueuze. Growing bitter lemon rind flavor and tartness and a little orange too as it warms up. At first, at fridge temp, there is minimal sourness. However,t by the time this beer reaches room temperature it gains a nice tartness and bright citrus character that reminds me of the 2007 OGV we drank the other night. Mineral water, straw and faint cedar round out the taste. The cedar is not nearly as pronounced in the taste as it is in the nose, but it is still there. Everything is nicely mixed here. I am shocked by how relatively not unpleasantly funky this beer is. 5/5

Mouthfeel: Light bodied, low carbonation. Nice light, but growing tartness with a very dry finish. Acidity level is perfect. 4.75/5

Overall: The cigar lover’s sour! This one largely lived up to the hype for me. The cedar-forward nose was absolutely incredible, and the taste, while different (in that it had less citrus and cedar and more straw/must/funk and mineral character) was just as good. My only knock on this brew is that I would have liked a little more carbonation or tartness to give the taste a bit more liveliness on the palate. Cheers!

Bottled 6 September 2003
A blend of one year old Lindeman and 4 year old Girardin.

APPEARANCE: The cork shot out upon opening, so be careful if you're in a room of valuable things (or people). Pours a huge, foamy, white head with half decent retention. Gamboge orange, cloudy, with a bit of carbonation evident. A foamy head remains until the end leaving lots of foamy lacing down the glass. Lots of head, but it makes for a good looking glass of lambic.

SMELL: Lemon, hay and barnyard aromas with a bit of acidity as well. Very funky with lots of barn and a hint of peach as well. Very nice.

TASTE: Follows suit. Lemon sourness, barnyard and hay up front with a touch of peachy sweetness in there as well. A mild but lingering finish of tart lemon sourness, acidity, hay and leather works really well. Flavors are really soft, complex and well meshed at this point. Acidity is well measured as well.

PALATE: Lighter body and higher levels of carbonation. Light and prickly, goes down okay and finishes quite dry and puckering.

OVERALL: Really nice stuff. The flavors have meshed really well and the balance between tart, lemon sourness, funk and acidity is excellent. A little too carbonated and prickly even for a geuze, but that's a minor issue for sure. Definitely worth the effort. Thanks again for bringing this one over guys.

Sweet Jesus! There are gushers and then there was this beer - as soon as the cage came off the cork flew out and hit d0b in the face. We also managed to get gueuze on two computers, the cat, my DVD cabinet, and the cheese tray. Thankfully no one was permanently blinded and we didn't lose a ton of brew.

A - Once the beer makes it into the glass it looks awesome. Huge billowy foam that eventually dissipates and leaves total glass-coating lacing. Opaque dark apricot color. This is about as good as it gets!

S - OK - there's funky, and then there is this beer. I feel like I'm sniffing a horse in the middle of a musty barn filled with must, dirt, and god knows what else. There's also some lemon sourness, leather, and super tart granny smith apples but after six years this is funk city. I'm not sure where else gueuze can go from this point.

T - The taste is excellent, but not as mind-blowing as the ridiculous smell. There's tons of barnyard funk, must, leather, tart unripened apples, and a crazy persistent dry and tart finish.

M - This is also a "wee" bit overcarbonated - there's some tingly burn on the upper lip and top palate. The texture is surprisingly softer than I tought it would be, and the finish is crazy dry with some light stickiness.

D - While I'd drink one of these on my own I think I might end up with a tummy-ache considering the funkiness. Still, I'd love to do this one again along with the Roos.

750ml corked and capped bottle poured into an acbf sampling glass, 2003 vintage.

Pours a very light cloudy almost whit color. Nose is all kinds of funk and tart that just kills your sense of smelll.

Taste is all wet blanket and old funk, pretty similar to the oude gueze but still pretty drinkable given the harsh and tart finish.

A - Dark hazy orange with a light white head and tons of carbonation. This was so carbonated that it gushed slightly when opened

S - Tart lemon, lactic acid, good amount of funk, slight orange, and light oak. This is just such a well balanced and great nose that manages to bring a strong amount of both tartness and funk. Really a great and complex nose 5

T - Lots of funk that gives it a blue cheese and farmhouse flavor that is mixed with a very tart lemon and lactic acid gueuze. It has a nice softness to it that keeps everything melded together and well balance. The funk really lingers on in the finish after the tartness fades away.

M - Tons of carbonation in a medium body make this easy to drink. The lingering funk with the tartness makes this have a very dry finish.

O - Really a great sour that lives up to the hype. Great balance between a funky and tart gueuze. I was happy to be able to enjoy this one

I originally had a nice big sample of this at De Heeren back on September, 5 years from the date this beer was bottled. I was lucky enough to share a full bottle of this with my cousin (krkearney), my brother and other family on Christmas Day. In addition to what I note below, I think the taste of the blauw is a bit more tart than the roze but it works very well in this fantastic beer.

I was hoping to find a bottle of this on a recent trip to De Heeren but was suprised to find it available there for sample at a beer fest they were having behind the restaurant. Wow! For the price of about $3 a got a nice sample of about 6 oz or so.

The beer poured a slightly hazy golden color with a nice thick bubbly head. The nose was a bit sour and citrus, funk. The taste was tart and funky with some definite yeast notes. There was also a nice wood character to the beer and overall this was one refreshing and beer worth savoring.

An enormous thank you to Adam for this one. Shared at a tasting. 5oz. pour into a small snifter. Reviewed from notes.

A: I don't even have to take the cage off this one. Exploding cork blows off the cage as soon as I untwist it. Pours a 2 finger, foamy white head with good retention. Beer is a cloudy orange-yellow. Lacing is thick, layered, and with great cling.

S: Nose is oak, fresh soaked wood, bark, lemons, and a hint of tea leaves. Aromatic and invigorating all around with the characteristic burnt rubber aroma noticeably missing.

T: Opens oaky. Wood is very apparent in this one. Middle is sour peach and subtle papaya. Tart from the midlde to the end. Dry without being puckering. Perfectly balanced. Finishes with an accented yeasty spice. No aftertaste.

M: Light to medium bodied, dry and saliva-enducing. Oily, sticky, and substantial in the mouth. Finish is accented with a sticky aftertaste that is clean for the most part.

D: At a tasting with Millenium Geuze and Crianza Helena, this was the best of its style by a longshot and was agreed upon by most others present. Simply a masterpiece. Perfectly smooth and balanced in both taste and feel. Definitely worth the effort to acquire.

pour was golden orange, nice fluffy white head. built up quick and just stuck there.

nose was very interesting. along with the cheese and funk was a mild berry aspect. picked up very faint blueberry and lemon. nice old oak. stunning nose.

very tart with the help of light lemon and sour berry. cheesy and funky with a strong old barnyard presence. a fair strong oak and musty flavor through the finish which helped the dry bitterness.

fairly carbonated with strong bite. very dry and bitter.

delicious, worthy, amazing.

This was my 2000th officially recorded tick! Hell yeah! 750ml bottle thanks to alfrantzell.

The cork exploded out of the bottle. Pours hazy golden in color with a gigantic white head that lasts. Good lacing.

Amazing gueuze aroma: funky, musty, and oaky with a slight sulfuric note. Really really awesome for the gueuze style.

Flavor is also excellent. A little funky with a subtle malt note and lots of barnyard funk. A little cheesiness even, but in a good way. Lots of oak and slight tannins. Just a little residual sweetness.

Dry on the palate with good medium acidity and fairly high carbonation.

Really awesome stuff overall. I like my gueuzes with a little bit of sweetness to balance the tartness, and this is such a beer. Too bad it's so rare (although the rarity undoubtedly enhanced my experience with this one).

750 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Hazy orange body. Medium white head. Nice collar.

Smell - Citrus zest and a hefty funk. Very woody. White pepper. Oh my.

Taste - Orange and lemon citrus. Some wheat. A little bit of malt. Pepper. Funky. Sourness builds into the finish. Unbelievably good.

Mouthfeel - Perfect sourness. Perfect body. Well carbonated.

Overall - I am stunned. This is as good as a gueuze gets.

Big big thanks to my friend Olivier, who happened to stop by at De Heeren Van Liederkercke and picked up a pair of the His and Her lambics. A rare treat indeed!

Appearance: Soft, peachy tone of caramel, and whole heck of a lot of fluffy bubbles. A few flakes twirled and danced to the bottom of my glass, but they didn't bother me much.

Smell: A great symphony of barnyard funk, smooth tobacco, musty old basement and a startling freshness that reminded me of lime juice or crabapples.

Taste: Big time carbonation and macho acidity burns the tongue with the first sip or two, but once your palate gets used to the sudden drop in pH the subtle flavors of freshly cut hay and a carnal, dirt-like flavor that reminded me of Pu Erh tea aged in clay pots. Aftertaste was sharp and metallic and of course dried off my salivary glands. It's weird and funky and I'm in love!

(sampled at Dak’s Memorial Day tasting. Huge thanks to Rusty for the share!!). Pours a cloudy, yellow apricot. Aroma is funky and has some nice grape, vinous qualities. Taste is sour and vinegary. Thin bodied with an oily texture. Smoth, sour finish. This was really good and I’m really glad to have tried this.

Bottle: Poured a dirty cloudy beige color lambic with a huge foamy head with great retention and some really good lacing. Aroma of oak with funky notes of wet leather and barnyard notes is quite sublime. Taste is a very nice complex mix between some acidity similar to what can be found in green apples as well as some oak and barn yard notes. Flavors are very well balanced with good carbonation even though bottle is 7 years old. Even though this is great it still feels to be slightly inferior to the regular Oude Gueuze from 1999 which in my book is still one of the best beer around the world.

Pours hazy yellow... big eggshell head dies back leaving traces of lace.

Nose is lemony and chock full of dank brett aromas... much more lactic than acetic... honestly, no vinegar is noticeable... dusty funk... My nose is not ready/trained enough for this one.

Flavor is like a punch in the palate... tons of sour and funky stuff going on, yet is very elegant throughout... the barnyard plays a bigger role than on the nose.. dirty earthy funk sorta move quickly into a lemony blast... vinous... hints of other fruit (skins) ... tannic apricot and green apple skins.. tart and musty all at the same time on the long lingering finish...

Good carbonation on the tongue but looks sorta flat in the glass... drys out the mouth with every sip... yet every sip makes me want more... Wonderful.

I am amazed that I had the rare opportunity to try this one.... and try and enjoy it numerous times.... Thanks again to one of the best BA's out there.

part of the mega sour tasting, i provided this gem which took me the better part of forever and my oldest son to acquire. none the less i made it and was thrilled to be able to bust it out.

Popped with a loud bang and was very active from the onset, that much was for sure. Tons of carbonation rippling through both the bottle and the glass throughout the sesssion, a huge carbonation explosion. Very nice bright amber color with a huge amount of white fizzy head on top. At least four inches of white foam topping off this one made it look wonderful, with a deep cloudy and hazy look to it, I knew it was aged well.

The aroma was so sour and bitter, I had a cheek to cheek grin immediatly. Simply a wonderful aroma here, tons of yeast coming through, lots of light sour grapes and tartness. The flavor was superb, really one of the best I have ever had. The first light notes of sour yeast roll across the tongue and just explode in your mouth, rippling and shredding taste buds all the way. Nice white grapes, light grains, and fresh grass all coming through. As it warmed some more subtle pear and apple characters were coming through now, this was astoundingly complex, so much so I did not really even know where to begin with this. I was floored by the flavor here. The carbonation was huge, keeping it light and airy and really letting every get to a depth that was confoundingly complex. Simply great. I easily threw done the whole bottle, as at only 6% this was simply outstanding. If I had more then one other bottle I would have reached for it immediatly. Long lingering dried out bitter finish had so much complex flavor that I was just letting linger on and on as I did not want to let it stop.

Overall easily one of the best beers, regardless of style that i have ever had the pleasure of drinking.

This beer gushed forth from the bottle immediately upon uncorking, though we didn't lose any beer or injure anyone in the process of opening it. In the glass it's a cloudy copper color with an enormous head that's fed by massive carbonation. Head retention is outstanding, the beer was topped by a big fluffy white cap of foam for a good 15 minutes.

The aroma is lemony (rotting lemons, specifically) and funky, wet hay and wet dog coming to mind. It's also very woody, musty, mushroom-y.

On the palate it opens with moderate lactic sourness, bitter orange peel and drying oak. Carbonation is high, almost champagne-like. Flavors of lemon rind, quince and green grape come out mid-palate. The sourness is nicely balanced by the wood, with a long tannic and drying finish.

I've had this beer on many occasions and next to some other world-class lambic, and it's consistently a favorite of mine. Possibly the best gueuze out there.

Thanks to bucketboy for bringing this to the tasting. Beer number 10 overall. Done side-by-side with the Drie Fonteinen red label Oude Geuze Vintage from 2002.

Hazy brownish amber in color, though the body is more clear than the Oude Geuze Vintage. This one haze absolutely no haze to it, and it is very effervescent.

The aroma is mildly earthy, though the 3F geuze briny funk comes through again very strong here. It is accompanied by a well-balanced lactic sourness that contributes citrusy notes. No hint of acetobacter here at all. The aroma rounds out with some aromas of sulfur and mineral spirits.

The flavor is much more tropical fruit-dominated than was the OGV. Dry and tannic with fruit skin tannins, there is a touch of vanilla. I find a strong oaky woodiness, though I know that it can't possibly be from the barrels, as they lost those abilities to impart these flavors long ago. Stonefruits - peaches and apricots - contribute brightening flavors in front of the more prominent funk that makes the sourness almost an afterthought. There is some citric lemon rind, the only hint of lacto in this flavor profile. Overall, I found that this flavor was more developed beginning to end than was the OGV.

Drying and complex on the palate, this was less bright and certainly less briny than the Oude Geuze Vintage from the year before, but the tropical notes really bring this beer up as they augment the earthiness of the mid-palate so nicely. This side-by-side is too close to call without going to the math of the ratings. Two world class geuzes produced in consecutive years.

Appears a hazy, light orange with streams of carbon dioxide quickly rising to the top of the white cap. Scattered streaks are left around the glass.
Smell is of tart lemon, punchy, ripe, tropical fruit, along with grapes fill out the flavors.
Taste is of the mentioned aromas, along with vanilla, citrus, pumelo, and caramel.
Mouthfeel is nicely carbonated with balanced feel(though somewhat acidic) all in a solid, medium body.

Murky amber pour with a nice sized white head. Oaky, dusty, leather aroma. Oh man. Zesty lemon, oak, leather, dust, and funk in the flavor. Tart finish with plenty of carbonation. This one was much more mild in the flavor than in the aroma which was very nice. Man oh man was this good.

Pours similar to the oude geuze. Hazy yellow color and lively carbonation. Smell has a very musty brett character. Earth, mushrooms and sharp lemons. Flavor is strikingly similar to Millenium Geuze for me. That dry, woody, strong brett, and earthy/soil/mushroom flavor is coming forward the most. Lemon acidity is moderate. A bit more acidic than Millenium. I actually prefer this much more. The flavor isn't totally driven and dulled out by that unique brett flavor. Carbonation is prickly on the tongue. Very nice.

Poured into a 5 oz. taster glass. Not a proper vessel for reviewing appearance, so my rating for this category is adjusted to create an accurate overall score.

Pours a murky golden brown color. The aroma is very oaky, lemon zesty, dirty/earthy, with a sunflower seed nuttiness.

The flavor is complex but very well balanced. A bit oak forward I suppose (ok, LOTS of oak) with a tart lemon backbone. Notes of peach and a laundry list of earthy qualities.

The body is ultra dry and pretty much perfect for a gueuze.

Overall this is just an outstanding example of gueuze and a blend that is definitely unique and inspiring.

Graduation Sour tasting- Huge thanks to rhinos00, pecorasc, and beace for making this epic whale sour tasting happen. This was the first bottle opened. Split 4 ways. Reviewed from notes.

A: Huge white rocky head. Ours a nice golden yellow color. Head dissipates slowly.

S: I pick up a spicy aroma. Wrote down that it smelled almost like artificial grape flavoring. Some wood too.

T: Wow. Very complex sour. Not overpowering sour. There is a nice citrus/lime flavor. Super delicate. Little peppery and woody with some brett coming through. Really enjoyed this one.

M: Nicely carbonated and good medium body. Nice tingle on the tongue.

D: This beer went down way too easy. I wish I would have had a whole bottle for myself. This was my favorite sour of the tasting, and there were some other whales at the party. Just an incredible beer. Very lucky to have tried this.

750ml bottle shared with the usual suspects.

a - super carbonated. the cork blew off with the slightest touch and proceeded to gush. be prepared.

s - huge funk. like blue cheese that smells diaper. lemon haygrass. a slight sulfer picked up that isn't desired.

t - green apple, grass and herbal finish. lemon AND lime. sweet dryness. basically imagine a gin & tonic lambic.

m - very carbonated (overly). light body. this one definitely improves once it has sat a while.

overall - I feel like this is a world-class brew/blend on its way down-hill. I'd say open it if you have it.
